A private investigator, a police lieutenant, and a man wearing a Bugs Bunny mask walk into a bar...
Unfortunately, it's no joke when Bugsy rigs the barrel of a twelve-gauge pump to the back of the bartender's neck.
Together for the first time in this explosive tale of greed, betrayal, and blood-soaked terror (not really, but it's a fast-paced and funny mystery-thriller), Florida PI Nicholas Colt (Crosscut, Key Death) and Chicago cop Jacqueline Daniels (Whiskey Sour, Shaken) team up to stop the robber before another shotgun shell gets RACKED.
First I have heard of this Colt P.I. He seemed okay, and I have read many Jack Daniel thrillers. What story was set just before Racked? Something about a sky marketing (Jack)?
Konrath and Hardin have put together a fun, fast paced thriller that I'm sure fans of both Jack Daniels and Nick Colt will really enjoy. Racked starts with a shotgun, and doesn't let up as the characters come together in an impressive collaboration from two great authors.
I'm a big fan of the Jack Daniels novels, have read all of them. So I decided to give this a try. The price was right, free. It was a good quick read. Enjoyed the Nicholas Colt character, will try to read some of the Nicholas Colt mysteries in the future. I gave it 4 stars.
Another exciting short episode in the life of Homicide Detective Jacqueline 'Jack' Daniels as she arrives in Florida to visit her mother. "Racked" (by Jude Hardin and Joe Konrath) is a barroom brawl of a tale with a bit of a mystery and requisite humorous ending. The story follows chronologically Jack's mid-air exploits told in "Straight Up" (by Iain Rob Wright and Joe Konrath). If you enjoy one thrill ride, you'll enjoy the other.
The premise of these new series of "Jack Daniels" mystery/thriller collaborations is that writers like Hardin, Wright, and others are bringing their own characters into the world created by J. A. Konrath. You'll soon be seeing collaborations between the collaborators as the various (new) characters meet, greet, and interact in their own exciting episodes. It's an intriguing concept for storytelling and will provide continued reading pleasure to those who enjoy this brand of gritty - and often seriously funny - thriller.
Another short Jack Daniel's (story co written with Jude Hardin) and chacter Nicolas Colt, P.I. it was a short of the two characters meeting per chance in a restuarant being robbed in Florida. A fun fast read that has me intrigued about the Nicolas Colt novels.
It's Halloween, so we have a police officer (Jack Daniels), a P.I. (Nicholas Colt) in a bar when the bad guy in a bugs bunny mask walks in. An enjoyable short story.
This Konrath Hardin collab has a few holes that leave you wanting. I can't say I didn't enjoy the short, but it could have definitely given more feelers and context.
A police woman, a detective and a masked man walk into a bar on Halloween. A big mess ensues. This was a very short book and a good, fast read. I rate this a 4.8

This novella was my first experience with either of these authors, as well as with either of the main characters (a cop and a PI). Each is a series character for one of the authors. The bad guy, of course, is also a main character, but he's important primarily as a prop. The narrative scheme is interesting for a short piece: first person from each of the three main characters. My one complaint is that I have been sick of the wise-cracking smartass PI for many years. The death of that cliche is long overdue. It's simply tiresome, and it does nothing but provide the author opportunity for pointless dialog. I was very pleased with the professional quality of the copyediting.
On the way to visit her mother in Florida, Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels stops off in Hallow's Cove to visit Kelly's Pool Hall and try out the famous pool table upstairs. At the same time, ex-Southern rocker turned P.I. Nicholas Colt stops in for a drink.
It's Halloween and the two are trading qups upstairs when they hear a shotgun blast downstairs.
A robber in a Bugs Bunny mask is holding up the bar and the pair team up to stop him before he kills someone. He'd already shot the cook in the legs and taken the bartender hostage.
Liked this one. Am familiar with Colt and now will have to seek out some Jack Daniels novels.
This little tale was told with alternating points of view, following the premise of a start of an incomplete joke: a cop, a P.I., and a bunny rabbit walk into a bar. . . The cop is Jack Daniels and the bunny is an armed robber in a mask. An entertaining premise but a little lacking in the execution. The characters were a little too flat, even while spouting rapid-fire, sometimes inane, jokes. A bit of junk food for the brain. The story went down fast, tasted sweet on the trip down the gullet but left you feeling kinda empty afterwards. Still, who doesn't like a candy bar once in a while?
All Lt. Jack Daniels wants to do is get a quick bite of lunch and shoot some pool as she heads for a visit with her mother. She meets private investigator, Nicholas Colt. Before they can play some pool, a crook in a Bugs Bunny mask tries to rob the tavern. Can this duo stop the bad guy or will this Halloween have some horror for real?
I liked this short story. I felt it did a good job of highlighting both characters equally well. It would serve as a nice introduction to readers that aren't familiar with them. It also will make a nice addition to fans of either series.
Story tag is kind of a sequel or continuation of Straight Up. Jack goes to Florida to visit her Mom. While she is there, she visits a well known pool hall. It's Halloween and a guy in a Bugs Bunny mask robs the place. This is the first time Jack meets Nicholas Holt and they end up stopoing him. They couldn't find the ring in the boss' safe, then found out it was the head chef that took it. It would have been better had the waitress been in in it but I still enjoyed the story.

Nicholas Cage returns to keep you guessing until the very last minute. As usual, I like the sneaky mindset of our detective, the new characters, and the good guys are not angels but just smart people.
A fun, "novelette"?-length story combining Konrath's Lt. Jack Daniels with Hardin's PI, Nicholas Colt. As is usual in any "JD" story, there are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, tongue-in-cheek comments, and of course, bloodshed.
Konrath and Hardin are an excellent combo. I perfect combination of humor and excitement that we have come to love with all of the Jack Daniels stories. I hope they collaborate again in the future for a longer book. Short, funny, and a perfect dose of action. Lots of fun.
