AURA ~Koga Maryuiin's Last War~ is a book that resonated with me deeply. While the chuunibyou/"middle-school delusional" condition presented here isn't something too often seen in US schools, I nonetheless felt deeply moved by this romcom about the struggle of forming connections, intense self-hatred for one's cringey past life, and trying to negotiate "wanting to fit in" and "wanting for the world to be as magical and fantastic as is presented in anime/games/movies/etc." It's all brought together by Romeo Tanaka's ability to almost seamlessly blend in the ridiculous and the goofy with heavy, thought-provoking meditations on societal expectations and human connection (which is what made me fall in love with CROSS†CHANNEL, a novel game he had worked on prior to this.)
The current-as-of-this-writing fan translation of this book is a bit rough and now difficult to find (due to the translator's blog being DMCA'd off of WordPress), but this has easily become one of my favorite light novels and deserves a read by anyone who's wanted to punch their high-school selves in the teeth for being such a cringe case, naively unconcerned with and/or openly defiant of the derisive snorts of the "normies."

Sato Ichiro, Sato Ryouko mang những cái họ thông thường và những cái tên cũng thông thường không kém. Không đặc biệt, không nổi trội. Những đứa trẻ đó đã hoặc đang không muốn sống trong lốt vỏ thông thường, mơ mộng mình là anh hùng hay nhân vật đặc biệt trong một thế giới siêu hình nào đó. Sự kì dị kéo tới tẩy chay, bắt nạt. Lùi bước để đi theo lối thường hay bướng bỉnh tìm tới cái kết cực đoan. "Aura" là câu truyện về những đứa trẻ phải bước ra khỏi thế giới ảo tưởng của bản thân và trưởng thành.

Tác giả viết 1 mạch không ngắt chương, đọc liền tù tì từ đầu đến cuối. Nếu hay xem các bộ phim anime học đường thì các bạn sẽ nhận ra rất nhiều điểm quen thuộc, từ cách phát triển cốt truyện, cách đặt vấn đề, giải quyết vấn đề, cách nói chuyện của các nhân vật v.v...

Nói chung đây không phải là cuốn sách có gì đấy thực sự nổi bật, mọi thứ dừng lại ở mức bình bình, đọc giải trí vui vui thôi.
