Kuniko Mukōda’s writing is clean, easy to read, light in tone, and straightforward. She has a talent for portraying people, family dynamics, and her relationships with others. However, since the book was published in 1978, almost 50 years ago, it feels distant and difficult for me to relate to. In particular, the gender roles, power structures, and the overall societal disrespect and misogyny toward women make it hard for me to appreciate the content of the book.
