BADLAND BRIDE

She'd spent a lifetime packing armor around her heart...

Raised an Army brat, Regis Simpson was used to calling new towns home, learning to quickly make friends but never letting anyone get too close. When devastating floods tear through the Badlands of South Dakota, she thinks Rudolph is just another town that needs to be rebuilt. Nothing more. The sooner she gets her work done, the sooner the people of Rudolph can heal and she can move on to the next town in need. She never counted on the sexy town doctor, Keith "Hawk" McKinnon or his determination to break down walls she'd spent a lifetime building, making it impossible for her to leave.

He's determined to break down her walls and give her a reason to stay...

Nothing pained Hawk McKinnon more than seeing people he'd known his whole life hurting. He traded a high-paying salary at a city hospital to come back to Rudolph and make a difference where he'd dug his roots. When the beautiful Regis Simpson comes to town offering help, he's immediately drawn to her even though she's spent a lifetime believing that everyone she loves leaves. Now she does the leaving and once her work is done, she'll be leaving again. He's determined to do everything possible to make her stay.

I love reading Lisa's books. Especially after the sad news that hit our province today. I enjoyed reading Dr Keith McKinnon and Regis 's story. I love the way the Lisa wove this story. She takes a flood and makes a series out of it. Its about taking chances in this story. For Regis that's hard to do for people have either have left or died on her. For Keith losing the brother closest has left its mark on him. I love the way she writes the story and brings each of the characters to life. She makes the tragedy they have gone thru real enough that you can relate to it. I love this story and I noticed on her page that there is a second part to this called Dakota Blues which I will be looking into as well. This story tells you a story that will have you coming back to see what happens next in the series. I'm looking forward to the next book which is Sam's story and seeing the family again.

Good read

There's been a major flood in a small community. He's the town doctor and she's the adjuster sent by the insurance company. He's laidback and calm and she's all business, no attachments, in and out, and she's gone......until she meets him. The sparks fly and the temperature beats up. Some sex, humor and romance. Highly recommend.

Just romance

The title promises a bride but this story doesn't have one. There is romance and a good story. Needs a better title.

Badland Bride by Lisa Mondello is a 2013 publication. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Regis "Reggie" is an insurance adjuster sent to Rudolph, South Dakota to measure the damage done by horrendous flooding. Right away Reggie runs into trouble when she injures herself badly enough to need a doctor. She meets Keith "Hawk" McKinnon , the local doctor. He takes a liking to her right away. Reggie has her defenses up though because she has moved from town to town her entire life and she knows once her work is done in Rudolph she will have to leave again. It never occurs to Keith that Reggie will leave, but, when her part of the job is done she begins making plans to head on to the next town. Keith has other plans for Reggie though, if he can only convince her that she can adjust to living in one place for an extended period of time and can have a long lasting stable relationship with one special person. But, would Reggie be happy living in Rudolph ?
This is the second book in the Dakota series. This one is not quite as heavy emotionally as the first book. This one is a much lighter read and shows the author's versitality. I did think the story was just a tiny bit rushed and the chemistry between Hawk and Reggie was just a little forced. There was enough material here to turn this one into a fuller length novel which would have given the characters more room to develop. Still, this is a fast, easy read and a good story. I will give this one an B. (3.5 stars)

Badland Bride by Lisa Mondello
Dakota Hearts Series Book 2
Regis Simpson works as an insurance adjuster. Going from town to town, disaster to disaster. No real home, no roots, no connections. She thought that was the way she liked things until the day she came to Rudolph, South Dakota and met the town doctor. With her job though she knew there was no staying around. Not everyone got their claims satisfied and she was the bad guy who had to tell them so.

Dr. Keith “Hawk” McKinnon was happier being a small-town doctor in his hometown then working in the big city. With it came the heartache of seeing friends and family suffering through the losses the flood had caused, the good with the bad. His life was everything that Regis's wasn't. He had plenty of family and deep roots and he was going to do his best to convince her she wanted it too.

This is the second story in the series. Book one is Her Dakota Man with Hawk's brother Logan. The stories take place in the small town of Rudolph where an ice storm combined with an early thaw has left the town a disaster zone. This is a smaller novella but a full size story. The author's words bring out the emotions of the people whether it be the hopelessness of losing so much or the joy as the town pulls together to help their neighbors. And of course romance in the midst of it all.

Another Heart Mending Success! The second book in the Dakota Hearts series doesn't disappoint. The ice storm and flood damage is still being cleaned up and another McKinnon meets his match. If I hadn't started the book so late (almost midnight) I would have read it start to finish in one sitting. And now a bit about the story...

Regis has traveled from place to place since she was born. First as an army brat and then as an insurance claim adjuster. She heads to Rudolph to assess the horrible damage for many of her clients. She's only been to a handful of clients when she slips and punctures her leg on some fencing that had been mangled. This puts her in the sights of Hawk. Will he be able to help her find a permanent home? Or will she just fly away once the claims are filed?

Favorite passage: "You're getting me in trouble." "I have a feeling you can do that all by yourself."

This series is short and sweet romance. Mondello gives enough back story for her characters to be believable. The romance develops quickly but with a novella length novel it's understandable."Badland Bride" was focused on Regis' fear of people leaving her and it was nice to see a guy pushing commitment for a change. Mondello writes solid romance novels in easy bite sized pieces.

Not So Much

I really enjoyed the first book. I understood it was a novella, but, it really didn't do much for me.

Hawk and Regis had chemistry. I liked the way the town pulled together after the disaster. You got a little background on Hawk, a little on Regis, and that was it.

The premise wasn't bad, even the instalove wasn't terrible. I guess I just wanted more from the book. Read it for yourself. It is a fast-paced read that can be completed in one sitting.

Another enjoyable quick read. I'm quickly becoming a big fan of the McKinnon brothers
Like I've said before I'm not a fan of quick reads but this series doesn't really feel like short reads. Only problem I've found is that they end too abruptly. But we may learn more about the characters as the series goes on.

On to the next one
