This brought back a lot of uncomfortable memories of my pre-teen and teenage/puberty years. Teenagers can be so callous and cruel, borne out of ignorance. I'd like to think people can grow up and their mindsets can change but it's so hard to say. So many people are shaped even before that and stay mostly that way. Heavy read but it is definitely a way for the mangaka to exorcise her feelings of growing up in an inherently patriarchal and misogynistic society.

A tale of how accepting apathy from yourself and others only exacerbates misery. Every character is guilty of this, some more than others. But it’s also not hard to infer how each got that way. It’s a very pessimistic look at the issues it presents, but not an entirely untrue one, unfortunately. Pretty bleak.

A deeply uncomfortable but honest look at misogyny.

Each chapter from a different character and their point of view of main character Hibari. Hibari is living in a body that is “too adult” for her age and the people around her resent her, judge her, lust over her or outright hate her for it.

Heavy source material but handled in a deft way.

A brilliant, emotional and frustrating picture of girlhood and the preconceived notions that belong with growing up. Tomoko Yamashita grasps the heart of the issues and breaks into it, painting a relatable yet gruelling scene. Absolutely love everything.

My full review will be on volume two, but dear God this hurts in so many personal ways.
Trigger warnings for sexual harassment and assault, the characters are in junior high.
