"A Little time for Myself" is a collection of daily thoughts and meditations. There is a daily Reading, a reminder and a question to contemplate for everyday of the year. This reader is dated from January 1st to December 31st.
I love the fact that Alanon has come out with a new and contemporary daily reader. Some of their original ones, while also so very valuable, are extremely dated in content and wording. This collection of experiences is much more inclusive and representative of the recovery community as a whole.
It can be off putting to constantly read in the older literature of the husband as the qualifier and the wife as the attendant of Alanon. And there are definitely some readings in the older literature that are flat out sexist.
I always try to apply the principle of “take what you like and leave the rest”, but I do see some of the antiquated wording and writings as a potential barrier to newcomers trying to immerse themselves and find the help they need.
This collection along with Courage to Change (also newer ) are definitely my two favorite daily readers from Alanon. And as always, not finished with this book, but have completed my first full reading. Definitely one I will be continuing to use.
This is a nice addition to the Al-Anon daily reader literature. I probably only read half of the book, at most. It is very good. For me, it is not as good as some of the other daily readers. However, I think for younger members, it is probably very relatable.
Note: Al-Anon is for family and friends of alcoholics. However, it is not anyone's role to decide who is or is not an alcoholic so one may say that Al-Anon is for those who have or have had a problem with someone else's drinking (or drug use). It is an aid for the person who is becoming or has become emotionally or spiritually unhealthy and troubled due to someone else's choices in this area. (My viewpoint.)
Lots of great daily concepts to meditate on. I feel like the editing in this book was a bit lacking compared to all the other Al-Anon daily readers. I could tell some submissions were initially a lot longer than what was cut down and printed in the book, and some of the concepts just weren't very cohesive or seemed rushed.
