The Verbal Behavior Approach: How to Teach Children with Autism and Related Disorders

Rate this book
The Verbal Behavior (VB) approach is a form of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), that is based on B.F. Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior and works particularly well with children with minimal or no speech abilities. In this book Dr. Mary Lynch Barbera draws on her own experiences as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and also as a parent of a child with autism to explain VB and how to use it.This step-by-step guide provides an abundance of information about how to help children develop better language and speaking skills, and also explains how to teach non-vocal children to use sign language. An entire chapter focuses on ways to reduce problem behavior, and there is also useful information on teaching toileting and other important self-help skills, that would benefit any child. This book will enable parents and professionals unfamiliar with the principles of ABA and VB to get started immediately using the Verbal Behavior approach to teach children with autism and related disorders.

I'm only giving this a lower review because I feel like it was too simple for someone in the field. I expected to get some new info but it was pretty much the basics - probably a good starter book for info on verbal behavior for someone with little background in it or parents.

Fantastic

I would recommend this book to any parent and any speech delay because it will help . There is something different when it’s a mother of a child who has gone through the journey herself .Makes the it all the more helpful and insightful.

I'm a little biased as the author! This is my first book published in 2007 and it's now in 17 languages including Spanish! I've traveled around the world based on this work and thrilled that it is still being sold and read by many world wide!

Pragmatic and based on clinical research. There are a lot of rubbish books about autism out there. This is a no-nonsense guide to verbal behaviour method. Practical and useful.

This gave me a detailed understanding of ABA, both its techniques and its purposes. I took one star off because the writing was hyper-technical and difficult to follow.
