Seventeen fascinating essays on many aspects of the French Revolution. Soboul was chair of the History of the French Revolution at the Sorbonne for many years until his death in 1982. Maps. Glossary. Notes. Brief biography of the author.
Essays are fairly hit or miss. Best are his analyses of class relations: "Classes and Class Struggle during the Revolution" (ch. 2), "Problems of work in Year II" (ch. 6), and "The French Revolution in the History of the Contemporary World" (ch. 17). These three are great supplementary reading to Soboul's "A Short History of the French Revolution, 1789-1799."
