Barren Planet #3

Reckless Recon

Following his brother half way across the galaxy seemed like a good idea at the time, but it hadn’t hit him just how much he was giving up. Stir-crazy after three weeks in space, Kerit, professional surfer turned interstellar colonist, jumps at the chance to get off the ship and onto the new planet’s surface — even if it is a little inhospitable.

He expects searing heat. He expects acid rain. He even expects the sunburn from hell. What he doesn’t expect is to meet Folly—the most prickly, irritating, and fascinating girl he’s ever known. And he needs her help if they want to make this planet their new home.

Determined to find her father's ship and prove he was a brilliant scientist, Folly has no interest in getting to know Kerit. The cute stranger is just a distraction. Unless of course he can help her in her search…

But something sinister lurks in the ruined city, and neither of them realise how much they are going to have to rely on each other if they want to make it out alive.

Rinelle Grey is no stranger to alternate lifestyles. She grew up in a variety of different homes, including a riverside shack with no electricity or running water, and even a tent. She and her sister spent their childhood chasing goats, climbing trees, eating peas and corn out of their mother’s vegetable garden, and occasionally rushing to get their correspondence school work in on time. Despite the difficulties of this lifestyle, she wouldn’t swap it for all the luxuries in the world (though she is rather fond of her running hot water and indoor plumbing now!)

She met her husband in ‘Family Therapy’, an elective they were both taking as part of their psychology degrees. It took several years for them to get together, in fact, their roleplaying characters got together before they did!

They married on the beach at sunrise in 2002, two months after Rinelle popped the question.

Although she had always loved to write, it wasn’t until her daughter was about eighteen months old that Rinelle started writing seriously. Probably not the best stage in terms of having spare time! And time only became scarcer when her daughter gave up her day sleep six months later. But by then, Rinelle had well and truly caught the writing bug, finding time somehow to continue with her passion. Her fast typing speed learnt from spending way too much time chatting on IRC, and the investment in an iPad when they came out, helped immensely.

Rinelle now lives on acreage with her husband and homeschooled daughter. In her spare time, she sells stock photography through an online site to support her family, and is hoping that writing will be able to add to that.

She loves to receive e-mails at rinelle@rinellegrey.com, or follow her on facebook or twitter.

Kerit was feeling restless – three weeks on the space ship Resolution was beginning to wear thin. With over a thousand people on board, little irritations seemed to be flaring everywhere. Plus Marlee, Kerit’s sister-in-law was in the final stages of her pregnancy and Tyris was concerned about her health as well as the responsibility of everyone on board.

As the Resolution hovered high above their destination – a deserted planet which had been hit by a meteor and decimated by acid rain and intense heat – the decision to send Tyris down to investigate changed with the concern for Marlee. So Kerit, even though he had never flown a shuttle before, had a crash course from his brother and descended to the planet they had hopes would become their new home. But as he was scaling the highest mountain while trying to escape the searing heat, he literally crashed into another human being – one who definitely wasn’t meant to be there.

As Folly persuaded Kerit to help her look for her father’s spaceship in return for help to reach the caves where her family and the rest of the inhabitants lived, they were suddenly frozen in terror – there was something sinister lurking nearby in the ruins of the city. They needed to escape – but how could they? With the Resolution high above them, but unable to come to their assistance, their plight was looking dire to say the least…

Another wonderful instalment of the "Barren Planet Series" by Aussie author Rinelle Grey. This one follows on directly from the previous, Reckless Rebellion, easily flowing from one to the other. I thoroughly enjoyed the action and intrigue, and can’t wait for book four. I have no hesitation in recommending this series highly.

With thanks to the author for my ARC copy to read and review.

Forsaken Planet, Book 3 in the Worlds Apart series, is a wonderful continuation of the saga but not dependent on the other stories for understanding. The reader can get enough background on what’s passed as they read the book. It’s a great story with the very engaging couple of Kerit and Folly taking the lead. Tension mounts throughout the tale and has the reader on the edge of her seat until the end. Rinelle Grey has built a great world that is extended here as we get closer to the exciting series conclusion. Good read and recommended highly.

Book 3! Great! Had to read them all in 1 weekend!

Action continues with more drama.. The people on Resolution thought they were finally going to find a home for themselves on the planet of Semala but of course, like everything else there was more conflict.. They find a real alien, and people on the planet who will not share because they want to keep the colonies rules, from which the people fled from. So.... Back to the sky again for them..

Good sci-fi romance

This story is engaging, the characters and plot are interesting. I definitely want to see what happens next.

Also, while there is a point where I was second guessing the characters’ response to one of the situations, they reassessed when circumstances changed and it turned out really well. Yay! Lol :-D

Really enjoyed this book.

Great storyline characters and world building.

My only criticism is the author is too long winded with her des riotions, pages n pages with dialogue. It got a bit tedious at times and I ended up skimming.

Really needs a good editor to solve this

This book has been floating around in my to-be-read pile for awhile, and since funds are low this month, I was keeping myself limited to my Kindle Unlimited $$ (which is always difficult when there are so many good books to read....). Up popped Reckless Recon. I had read the previous two books in the series - Reckless Rescue and Reckless Rebellion - so long ago that I felt I needed to go back and skim them before embarking on Reckless Recon. Well, skim turned into thoroughly re-reading because Reckless Rescue really is very, very good. Marlee and Tyris spent too much time apart in Reckless Rebellion for me to be quite so enamored of the second book. However, with the new adventure at Semala teasing me at the end of Book 2, I wanted to dig into Book 3.

I don't want to say much about the landing on Semala and Kerit's and Folly's adventures there. However, it is worth noting that Rinelle Grey can turn the weather and terrain into something very vivid. While she did a great job describing a harsh winter on Zerris in Book 1, she has flipped that to a hot, harsh, dry climate on Semala. The descriptions of thirst and sweating and steaming in an environmental suit are really well done.

I was curious to see professional surfer Kerit transition to space traveler and life on a desolate planet. How was Rinelle Grey going to turn this likable surfer-dude who constantly cleans out his brother's refrigerator into a space opera hero? She does so by stripping him down to someone who questions his role, his worth and his intelligence and building him back up. As the book goes on, Kerit gains confidence and has one really brave, really reckless moment that is the pinnacle of his emergence as a hero. Kerit isn't a "tortured hero" type, but he is looking for his place in the universe.

Folly is his female counterpart, and they find comfort in each other's searching and personal struggles. I liked their romance, but Folly was very naïve and overly concerned with what people thought of her. She was very bright but emotionally immature, and that was a flaw she needed to overcome. Rinelle Grey does not write perfect people, and their journey to understanding themselves and their situations is part of the revelatory story-telling that has become a pattern with her books. Her heroes and heroines have to dig deep and rally. Well, and defeat the bad guys, fall in love, live up to expectations and save the day. Simple, really.

I really enjoyed the first two books in the series, but this one was a little disappointing. It was a little rushed to me. This is Kerit's story, Tyris's brother. Kerit volunteers to go down to the uninhabited planet to set a beacon so that a new process to make the planet habitable. Thinking that the planted is uninhabited he was surprised when he bumps into Folly who informs him that at least 5000 people already live on the planet inside a giant cave. Folly gets Kerit to fly her to a deserted city in search of her father, Instead they find a alien and only just escape with their lives.

Reckless Recon is the third book in the Barren Planet series. I made a slow start as I tried to remember what had happened in the last book, but I soon picked up the story from the reminders in the plot. A group of rebels are looking for a new planet to inhabit after leaving The Colonies because they disagreed with the strict rules implied to restrict the population growth.

Kerit volunteers to go down to the uninhabited planet to set a beacon so that a new process called terraforming can be used to make the planet habitable. However he bumps into Folly who informs him that at least 5000 people already live on the planet inside a giant cave.

Seizing an opportunity to use Kerit's shuttlecraft, Folly get's Kerit to fly her to the city of Tadig. A deserted city in ruins after a meteor strike in search of her father. Instead they find a vicious alien and only just escape with their lives. Folly takes Kerit to meet her people but they are set in their ways and refuse to believe her about the alien. They are even more surprised by the news of 1000 people waiting in the spaceship Resolution above the planet who want to make it their new home.

I really like this series. In this book Rinelle creates a cute furry creature called a skuttle and I enjoyed the idea of the huge cave housing plants and animals and surviving on a planet with dust and acid rain. Looking forward to reading the next instalment for the space travellers.

A little disappointing. I really enjoyed the first two books in the series - they were a good mix of sci-fi, adventure, and (believable) romance. This book had some good action, but the romance wasn't convincing. It was insta-love with a heaping dose of angst and quickly became the main focus of the book, with all other plot points relegated to the occasional paragraph.

That being said, I do find the potential plot for the next book in the series intriguing and plan on reading it.

Wow, this was my favourite Rinelle Grey book so far. Folly and Kerit are truly loveable characters who I willed to get together. The world building is detailed and realistic - I want to visit the caves - and the plot twists very unexpected. I can't say anymore without spoilers, but I was very happy to find out there will be a fourth in the series. Roll on Reckless Remedy!
