From WLW author Rojana Krait comes a sapphic vampire tale that blazes through the boundaries between physical and emotional bondage, love and pain, given and found family, and the myriad complicated relationships that women form with one another. House of Sand features an ice queen on the brink of shattering, a topsy-turvy take on the grumpy sunshine trope, and a slow-burn, masc x femme love story with an ending that's both heartbreaking and HEA.

I broke the chains that bound me at birth but I’ll never escape from the shackles of love and duty, irons that get heavier with each passing year, threatening to pull me down into an abyss of madness and pain. I don’t think I can bear the weight of yet another lost soul but when my soulmate is thrust into my world broken and afraid, I get a brief taste of the only magic that can save me from drowning in the murky waters of the womb. This spiraling angel is searching for her savior, but how can I be the hero she needs when I’m slowly being poisoned by my own blood?

The best representation of a survivor of severe abuse that I've ever read.

Nala was my favorite character even in House of Glass and the depth and layers of her character are so well done. The way her mind works, her triggers, her thoughts and feelings are so well represented and explored that I found myself wondering whose experiences the author drew on to write this book. Her thoughts were heartbreaking but also funny, especially the ones about Aya. The part where Nala talks about how she can't tolerate Aya trying to force her to get better with her motivational talks so that she could stop feeling guilty about Nala really resonated with me. As a survivor with PTSD, there is nothing more annoying that people who won't leave you alone with their pep talks even after you've explained multiple times that you need more time to heal and cannot put a date to it.

Seeing Nala grow from being entirely codependent with no sense of identity to an independent woman willing to explore slowly was really satisfying. Kudos to the author for crafting this beautiful journey in a believable way. Nala does not go from insane to badass overnight and it's perfect.

There is also a self awareness throughout the story and I liked the fact that no one thinks Elodie and Aya's relationship is normal or romantic.

The references to serial killers H.H.Holmes and Ed Gein were interesting in how they were woven into the story. I don't know if there were others, these are the only two I recognized in the boarding house owner and the collector.

I read this on Kindle unlimited and felt like it was a great disservice to this book. It should be published mainstream. Especially considering all the trash out there in the romantasy genre.

Highly recommended for people looking for spice with substance!

Sapphic Vampires, YES PLEASE

Sexy and captivating, House of Sand follows Adrienne Sands and starts with the devastation of her family in 1867 Virginia. It follows her transition into becoming a vampire, and onto present day. Adrienne first sees her undead state as a curse, but she finds family in a coven of contemporary lesbian vampires who show her how to use her powers for good. In protecting innocent people and helping to rid the world of monsters, Adrienne becomes the savior (then unwilling caretaker) of a tormented and broken woman Nala.
Adrienne is a tall, defined masc-presenting Ice Queen, and Nala is a small and fragile femme. The dynamic, bond, the LOVE that grows between them tests the boundaries of physical and emotional pain, grief, dependency, and trust. A dark sexual attraction spirals the two women into a bdsm relationship that helps Adrienne’s need for control, and Nala’s desire to be controlled.

I read this book cover to cover in one sitting and loved every second of it. It’s spicy, twisted, and perfect for sapphic dark romance readers like myself. It’s inclusive (lgbt, bipoc, non-binary rep) and I’m obsessed with how she builds her resilient, commanding, feral female (and NB) characters. This is a fresh take on vampires (no one is turning into bats in these books) and the only thing I don’t like- is how long I have to wait until the next book comes out.

A SOLID 5 STARS! And the spice is 5/5 as well! In my top 10 OAT

3.25- To start the beginning was a stretch at the least and historically inaccurate at the worst. Adrienne was considered the man of a black household in a time where Black people were considered 3/5 of a person and were still enslaved. I enjoyed getting more background of the characters in this one but similar to the first it fell into a pattern of repetitiveness. You would think centuries old vampires would have better thought processing skills by now. The word of the book last book was dude and this book it was man. I’m not saying they had to speak in old English, but they’re speech patterns stood out as odd to me.

This is the second book in Krait’s Delirium Nocturnum series. It is really important to have read the first book because this one picks up right afterwards. Once again, I really implore anyone who is thinking of reading this to take a look at the TW’s via author’s website. They were all accurate and helped me prepare myself for what I was delving into.

This dark romance was very dark, just like the previous one. I enjoyed the perspective from Adrienne Sands who was introduced in the first book, as each novel follows one of the “sisters”. I already cared for Nala Lachat, but even more so when you are placed in her point of view. Their romance was believable and I enjoyed the various obstacles that were presented in the story. It felt more engaging than the previous book.

As stated in my last review:

↱I wish the formatting was a bit easier to read. That is totally a personal reader’s opinion though! The explicit sex scenes I wanted to have been written with a bit more description and lengthier (for each one).

Some events in the book were a bit rough for me to get through (once again, read TW’s). Looking past those parts, it was a solid 4* and was positive overall.↲

➢Happy reading!
