Enemies Ever After #1

Veiled in Stars and Silver

Rate this book
He's the dread pirate captain who kidnapped her brothers.
She's out for revenge.

For seven years, Wendy has been preparing for the day that she can finally return to Neverland, rescue her brothers, and take her vengeance on Captain Hook. But when she finally returns, things in Neverland aren't how Wendy remembers.

Since when did Peter come off shallow and grating? And the captain of the Jolly Roger has a strange allure that is oddly difficult to resist. When Peter tells her that her brothers are dead, her world is shattered.

And yet, Hook claims they are alive. He will lead her to them if she retrieves a powerful weapon capable of destroying all of Neverland. She can't trust his searing forget-me-not gaze. She shouldn't agree. But Wendy will do anything to find her brothers.

Even bargain with evil itself in the form of one James Hook.

Veiled in Stars and Silver is one of ten books in the Enemies Ever After series, a collection of standalone short novels featuring enemies-to-lovers fairy tale retellings with a touch of steam.

Thank you to the author for providing Veiled in Stars and Silver as an ARC! In my fairytale retelling era and this book was an enjoyable, magical, spicy read that brought the world of Neverland to life. This story takes place 8 years after the Darling children returned from Neverland in which 7 years were spent with Wendy seeking revenge on Hook for coming to London and kidnapping her brothers.

Wendy Darling was a tough and determined FMC who eventually makes it back to Neverland to save her brothers. She has thought about taking out her revenge on Hook for years but after meeting him again, James Hook doesn’t appear to be the villain like he is made out to be.

The tension between Wendy and Hook was delicious and felt like true enemies to lovers. I loved learning about his backstory, the truth of Neverland, and getting Hook’s POV. Hook was probably my favorite character in this retelling! I also appreciated the various acts that occurred with his actual Hook 😉

Overall a solid 3.5 story if you need fairytale energy with a sprinkle of spice🧚‍♀️

Favorite quotes:

“Wendy” he looked at me and I saw a chasm as empty as the depth of the sea. “I don’t have any happy thoughts.”

“Then let me give you one.” Rising onto my toes, I pressed my lips to his.

✨✨✨✨✨✨✨

“I think the worst thing is that you fight to give others a second chance you won’t allow yourself to take”

“It’s a chance I don’t deserve”

“I’ll be your second chance,” I murmured in his ear.

Enemies to Lovers

PLOT
Seven years since her brothers were captured by the notorious Captain James Hook, seven years since she was taken into a world unknown to the childhood she was brought up in. Now Wendy not anymore the scared naive little girl takes on the biggest threat of all Neverland has face. But she must create the alliance with her one enemy, one that is commonly known as Captain Hook. Neverland is in trouble, Wendy will fight for her brothers, and Hook will do anything to destroy his enemies. Together they must work, or else all of what once was a beautiful imaginated land will become a world filled of dangerous game of hunter and prey.

MY THOUGHTS
this book was definitely plot driven, like we didn't get to see much of the chemistry between the love interests. I ALWAYS love a good, the villain gets the girl type thing. And let me just say this was amazing. It wasn't what I expected going into the story. It's really is a darker version of Peter Pan. And there is some mature scenes including violence, and there are some swearing only words are mentioned such as shit, damn, using Lord's name in vain, and stuff as that.

Wendy was certainly one of my favorite retelling fmc character i've read at all. I loved how the author painted her as some girl with baggage but not too much and honestly I enjoyed how the author didn't make her relatable at all. She wasn't pick me, or oh but I have no choice vibes. She was overall just like don't talk bullshit to a bullshitter type person which I respect so much. And I loved the scenes where she let herself lean on other people and wasn't like "i'm all alone" type thing. Overall she was amazing.

The story was very plot driven as I said. we were mainly focus on how to solve the mystery of Neverland. And to get rid of the evil in it. and I loved it. at first I was like oh I want more romance but over all story was nicely done and I loved the background stuff we got for characters.

QUOTES
Changing was too much. I desperately wanted to have the correct answer. For everything to be simple. Black and white, like it had been in childhood. And yet, that childhood was lost. Neverland wasn’t the same. And neither was I.

Wendy is all grown up and she has one mission - kill Captain Hook. He kidnapped her brothers 7 years ago, and she's been working hard to find a way to Neverland to seek her revenge on the villain.
This is a gripping Peter Pan retelling following Wendy and Hook as adults. There's violence, action, magic, mystery and spice, and it's fantastic.
Fabulous twists, morally grey characters, and a tantaslingly steamy slow burn enemy to lover romance.
Another fabulous read in the enemies ever after series with a kick ass FMC!

✨"Welcome back to Neverland, Wendy Darling"
✨"She was deadly, well trained. There was so much to admire about Wendy Darling besides her beauty. Which was what made her dangerous"

This was my first time reading a book by J. Ann Curtis and though this is the fourth book in a row of ten novels, they can be read as stand alones. And I can't wait to read more of these novels. I loved this Peter Pan retelling.

The author let this story take place a couple of years later then when Wendy visited Neverland the first time with Hook kidnapping her brothers. I loved the intake that people can go to Neverland when they want to escape something that is happening in their world. Curtis took her time with explaining the world and charactars, making it easy to see the things before in your mind. The twists and turns made me want to continue reading.

I enjoyed reading this book very much and can't wait to read more of this authors work.

Thank you J. Ann Curtis for this ARC to read and review.

This was genuinely so good. Like the whole thing was so creative and I could totally see this being how things actually played out in Neverland, it just makes sense. Also Hook was really hot, damn.

Wow. Just wow. I absolutely loved Veiled in Stars and Silver! This was a super quick and fun read. I enjoyed seeing a grown up Wendy back in Neverland, and I really liked the way we get to see her realizing Neverland and its inhabitants weren’t quite as they seemed when she visited as a child.

Now I have to talk about Hook. I adore his characterization in this book! He’s not what we all tend to think of when we think about Captain Hook in the original Peter Pan story. If you watched Once Upon a Time and thought, “wow I need some more Killian Jones in my life,” this is the book for you! His interactions with Wendy were just fabulous. He’s morally gray and tortured and has dark hair so really, what more could you want in an MMC?

I will absolutely be picking up the other retellings by J. Ann Curtis as I had a wonderful time with Veiled in Stars and Silver. I can’t wait to see what twists lie in store for me with the others!

Thank you so much to J. Ann Curtis for the eARC of Veiled in Stars and Silver! All opinions are, of course, my own!

This is a sequel to peter pan, a great version of Neverland, set 8 years after Wendy returned to London.
After Hook kidnapped John & Michael, Wendy spends 8 years training to become strong and deadly while desperately trying to return to Neverland to rescue her brothers an kill captain Hook. However everything isn't as it seems and what used to be a fun adventure turns dark an sinnester.
The story has adventure, twists an romance with a bit of spice, I throughly enjoyed and was captivated from the start.

This book was absolutely perfect. An interesting twist on Peter Pan, Wendy, and James Hook. Fairytale retelling mixed with an element of mystery. You're kept wondering who the true villain of the story really is.

From the very beginning, Wendy was a strong woman who spent 7 years trying to find a way back to save her little brother after they were taken by Hook. During that time she's forced to live with her tyrant of an uncle. When faced with the prospect of an arranged marriage Wendy's description to escape becomes her ticket back to Neverland. When she arrives she soon finds things in Neverland are very different than what she remembers.

Although I’ve never been a fan of Peter Pan retellings were Hook and Wendy form some kind of relationship, I was still determined to give this a try as I’m a sucker for Peter Pan retellings. Boy, am I glad I did. This might be the best retelling I’ve ever read!
Although I still find the whole Wendy and Hook forming a relationship storyline to be weird as he’s been a grown man for years and years and she’s usually a young adult, I honestly didn’t mind it this time.
This was an exciting retelling that really portrayed the human side of James Hook, as well as the boyish and childish side of Peter. I loved the twists and turns, and especially the ending!!
Really recommend this!

“My Neverland was tainted by a history that I’d never known.” -J. Ann Curtis

This is a Peter Pan retelling where Neverland isn’t exactly how we remember it. This story is about growing and changing. Which changes how we view the things around us.

This book was a wonderful adventure! It sucked me in and kept me wanting to know more. I flew through it! (Pun intended 😉).

Reading this story felt like when you grow up and things aren’t as magical or amazing as you thought they were. The feelings of growing up and seeing things for what they really are. Plus a few spicy scenes.

Quick thoughts:
• easy read
• spicy scenes
• enemies to lovers
• adventure & growth

Thank you to the author for gifting me this eARC! All my thoughts are my own.

This is one of top favorite retelling of Peter pan and I really enjoyed it! There is twists and turns that keep you guessing, and is different then most of the other retelling I have read. If you're looking for spice, there is about a scene and a half, but don't let that stop you from reading it!

Wendy - I loved her. The way the story opens up and the more you get to know her, you'll find out she's not your ordinary Wendy, she's such a badass and I loved her cleverness and the big hear.
Hook - Well he's also definitely not who you think he is, and I so loved that twist into his story. He did have quite a sad story and I enjoyed the fact Wendy went past that and gave him a second chance at love.
Peter - Until the end I hated him. I legit thought he was crazy or something lol, but alas the twist you'll find you, is not something I've seen it coming, and I quite enjoyed how things ended up with him, I think he also got a second chance to some arc redemption, even tho he wasn't the bad guy, but also a victim.

I am a sucker for Peter Pan retellings, so getting to read about Neverland, Lost Boys and all the adventure is always bringing me a happy feeling. I can't say the world-building was the main attraction, you get enough information to know where you are, and how things look around but that's kinda it. I did wish to get more information on this Neverland and get that magic feeling, but even without that extra touch, the background of the story is beautiful.

⮞ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝/𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝 ⮜
I enjoyed the pace of the story. Was the right amount of speed and kept me entertained, and who doesn't love a good Peter Pan retelling with a twist, or I'd rather say quite a few twists because the story does take some darker turns than expected, but I felt that added to the charm of the story, the growth of the characters if you will. I loved the enemies to lovers and the tension and how Wendy is definitely not the shy girl you think she is. Overall I enjoyed this world and was whimsical even tho it did had some darker things happening here and there.

⮞ 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐞/TW ⮜
I'd say the story is round 3 Pepper Flames spicy, it's not overly spicy and only has one sex scene but the rest is a lot of sexual tension and a lot of enemies to lovers with "I burn for him/her". There is fighting, and also abuse towards two young adults (in their 20s) but nothing that happened in the story triggered me.

First I want to thank the author for the ARC!

I thought this was a very interesting take on Peter Pan! Overall, I enjoyed the story. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future

Unfortunately there were a few things I didn’t like and felt that it prevented it from achieving its full potential.

• Plot - it felt very rushed. Everything seemed to happen so quickly that the build up to key points felt unearned. The obstacles that Wendy faced dissolved too easily, and the ending just didn’t feel satisfying. I wish that more of the scenes had been fleshed out and included more detail.

• Characters - The characters had little to no depth at all. For the main characters, it’s like we were supposed to already know them. Most of the side characters felt like props with no personality at all.
Because of this it read like a fan fiction more than an original story. I was really hoping the author would use this interesting take on Peter Pan and give the characters more depth. Unfortunately that didn’t happen and it made it difficult for me to connect to the story or the characters.

• The cover & title - this is merely my opinion and did not affect my overall rating of the book. While the cover is pretty, I feel that it and title are too similar to the hundreds of romantasy books out there already. It seems to just blend in and doesn’t stand out at all.

I had to stay up late finishing this one. This Peter Pan retelling where Hook becomes the love interest while Wendy discovers the reality of Neverland through adult eyes was delightful!

Hook was a wonderfully complex character. It was a nice surprise to see that this was a multi POV story. I adored Wendy’s firey determined spirit. She wasn’t helpless, but it was nice to see her growth as she learned truths about Neverland.

Speaking of Neverland- excuse me? Ma’am? I will never be able to watch the movie or play without thinking of this retelling. This book did such a great job of reforming my views on the story. Curtis did not change the original story, but instead revealed how twisted it could have been through the adult (ish) version of the characters. Oh, and there’s a dash of spice.

The book is short - I believe it qualifies as a novella? That is one of my tiny list of issues. So much more could have been explored. There’s potential for so much more character development and world building- especially with Peter.

I enjoyed the book enough that I will be reading the other standalone retellings 🥰

Thanks to J. A. Curtis for the eARC. ❤️

I feel like there has been an uptick in Peter Pan retellings in the last couple of years, and it's something that I definitely enjoy seeing. I love getting to see the characters grown up and explore a "what if" with Neverland - if it's changed, if it's evil now, etc.

In this one, Wendy is grown and in a bad family situation ever since her brothers were kidnapped and taken back to Neverland. She has been determined to get back there herself and rescue them. When she gets there, however, she learns that Neverland is not what she remembered and people she thought were friends might not be. And enemies might not still be enemies either.

I love Hook, always love when a villain is so much more complex than what you see on the surface level. This one really adds some fun new twists on the characters and story. I definitely enjoyed the idea of this Wendy and Hook together.

It's fast pasted and high stakes and there is some spice at the end, but there is definitely a build up to get there.

I received a book for an instagram book tour. My thoughts are my own.

ARC Review

This Peter Pan retelling brought back all the childhood memories! I absolutely adored reading about Wendy and Captain Hook and their adventure of saving Neverland. My only pet peeve was the writing decision; Wendy written in first person and Peter & James written in third person. The surprise twist at the end really got me, and I think it was absolute genius. I always felt they were the true villain, even growing up watching Peter Pan!

𝙽𝚎𝚟𝚎𝚛𝚕𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚠𝚊𝚜𝚗’𝚝 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚜𝚊𝚖𝚎. 𝙰𝚗𝚍 𝚗𝚎𝚒𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛 𝚠𝚊𝚜 𝙸.

Veiled in Stars and Silver is one of ten books in the Enemies Ever After series, a collection of standalone short novels featuring enemies-to-lovers fairy tale retellings with a touch of steam.

This installment is a Peter Pan retelling. In this iteration, Wendy is a knife-wielding b@das$ set on returning to Neverland to rescue her brothers and take down Captain Hook once and for all.

But what if Peter Pan and Hook weren’t who she thought they were? Everything changes once she arrives and learns that all is not what it seems. Sinister things are at play, and Wendy is the only one to stop it, if she doesn’t lose herself in the process…

Prepare to see familiar characters paired with a delightful twist in this Peter Pan dark retelling. Hook and Wendy are at the forefront of this tale and I loved their backstories, motivations, and story arcs. Wendy is forged by determination for vengeance- she’s no fragile damsel. The man behind the hook is multilayered- morally grey, guilt-ridden, and HOT. Fairy dust me, because I want to head to Neverland to find him!

Veiled in Stars and Silver is packed with adventure, slow burn 🌶️, and a unique twist on Peter Pan we absolutely needed!

Huge thanks to the author for the ARC opportunity! This is my honest and voluntary review.

He's the dread pirate captain who kidnapped her brothers.
She's out for revenge.

Veiled in Stars and Silver by J. Ann Curtis, a retelling of Peter Pan, is the story of Wendy Darling, who wants to return to Neverland and Peter Pan. When Captain Hook has kidnapped her brothers, she gets help to return to Neverland. But things have changed since she has been gone and not everything is as it seems.

As I love a retelling of fairy tales I was really eager to read this novel and I loved it. It was everything I hoped it would be, and more. From the very first page I was glued to the pages and I could not stop reading. Wendy is a fierce character and out for revenge as she learns what happened to her brothers. She is smart and skilled to save herself and others. At the same time she longs to be with Peter Pan, but he has not grown up at all and has changed. James Hook is a mystery, he is way different from what Wendy thought he was or would be, because he seems to be not the villain at all. The tension between them gave off an enemies to lovers vibe, one trope I love very much. Their banter and interactions was just great.

I really loved how J. Ann Curtis wrote this book. Due to the writing style we get to know Hook better, his thoughts and emotions, and that was fantastic. He is my favorite character in this book. Reading this book has given me a totally different vibe of the Peter Pan story. And maybe Captain Hook is not the villain at all? At least in this book he is not totally evil and I loved how J. Ann Curtis made this retelling and the characters her own.

Veiled in Stars and Silvers is a fantastic Peter Pan retelling (or maybe a story than picks up after the original tale?), with a lot of action, a great writing style, with romance, danger and lots of twists and turns, a book I adored.

Highly recommended!

Now THAT is how you turn a villain into a hero!

This story was action-packed from the very beginning. Curtis has you bought into these characters from the first page, and just built on that throughout.

Wendy is smart, fearless, wounded, strong, and bold. I loved the twist of how she grew up, even if the circumstances were awful. She is a FMC who is strong and skilled enough to save others, and herself. Her self-awareness and growth throughout the story felt natural and unforced. Given the length of this novel, I feel like that is a feat within itself.

James Hook is everything you want a protective, morally grey MMC to be. Add to it that he has experienced his own growth but is in denial about his worthiness and you have a perfect pairing.

I really loved how the magic and story stayed true to what we all know as Peter Pan, but built on Wendy's experience as a child only for her to find out that not everything is how it seems.

The writing in this story was so good and smooth. As in, you're not going to put it down once you start good. I very rarely found myself questioning how we got from one plot in the story to the other.

The ending is satisfying and maybe not what you'd expect 😉.

What you can expect:

🏴‍☠️ Morally Grey MMC
🏴‍☠️ Stabby FMC
🏴‍☠️ one Bed
🏴‍☠️ Touch her and 💀

Overall: Highly Recommend!

We all know Peter Pan. How that story goes. But what happens when all your knowledge is turned upside down. and the whole fairy tale is something else entirely.

This one is about Wendy and Hook. Hook kidnaps Wendy's brothers and after 7 years, she's out for revenge. But surprise, Hook is not the villain. There are some plot twists and very interesting characters. It was fun and easy to read.

I loved the tension between them. And it was true enemies to lovers.
And also, who would have thought that other interesting things can be done with a hook (in the bedroom) 🤭😉

This mildly spicy villain-gets-the-girl novella about Neverland and Peter Pan was lovely! Wendy and Hook had quite the adventure, and we love a good meet cute. I loved the twist on my childhood favorite Peter Pan. This retelling was original, captivating, and kept my attention from beginning to end. The mystery and unexpected events were interesting and well written. I loved the characters and each part they played to weave this magical story. The heated scenes are also just enough to fog up the captain's quarters. I highly recommend this 5-star fantasy romance.

The concept of this ‘sequel’ to Peter Pan is absolutely brilliant. What if Captain Hook isn’t the real villain of the story? What if Neverland isn’t really the utopia it seems to be to the Lost Boys?

Set seven years after the original tale, Wendy goes back to Neverland to rescue her brothers who were kidnapped. She’s a great stabby FMC who starts out believably naive, gullible, and shortsighted, but as she learns and grows, and seeks out the truth beyond the lies she’s believed for far too long, she becomes a truly wonderful character, someone I could respect and root for.

Captain Hook and Peter Pan are still brilliant foils of each other, but I love the twist Curtis worked into this story, which added so much more depth than the original has. I also absolutely loved the romance. It’s very well written and was done just right. Enemies to lovers is quite overdone, but this one is refreshing and was a delight to read.

Unfortunately, one thing I found horribly jarring, and which threw me out of the story repeatedly, were massive inconsistencies related to the setting. The original version of Peter Pan is set in the first decade of the twentieth century. So, when this was set at 7 years later, I expected the London depicted to fit how the world was just before the First World War. However, language use, information about clothing, and other elements consistently didn’t fit this picture. I then thought perhaps the author decided to use the Disney creation date of 1953 as the baseline, but that didn’t match up properly with other elements in the setting. If there had been only a few jarring cases, I might have been able to brush off my irritation, but as there are so many, I got the impression the author made absolutely no effort to research anything, and it felt sloppy.

For readers who love historical fantasy to be accurate, I’d say pass on this one; anyone who loves a good reimagining of a classic tale, enjoys fabulous twists, good characters and a nice steamy scene or two, this novel will be right up your alley! It even comes with a strong message about growing and embracing change, no matter how old you are.

Love that this has elements of the Peter Pan story; definitely more adult though. This story has some passion; detailed passion, and danger going on. Like the enemies to more scenario! Wendy’s brothers have been kidnapped and taken back to Neverland, so she’s trying to do everything she can to get back to Neverland to rescue them. Wendy is in for some surprising turn of events when she does make it back to Neverland; everything she thought about the place and the people of Neverland is put into question when some new information comes to light. Wendy isn’t sure what and who to believe in, but luckily, Wendy is a fierce lady! Love that she can kick some booty! She is a bit narrow focused when it comes to saving her brothers, but she mostly has some common sense. Liked the dynamics in the romance! Some good hate to want him vibes; fun times! I didn’t fully love the ending; still a good one though, and any of the “lady of the night” stuff was just no good for me; I never like when “ladies of the night” are included in stories. Overall, I loved this! Intriguing and fun!

Favorite Peter Pan Retelling so far!!

Peter Pan meets Pirate of Caribbean and Once Upon a Time.

The story takes place seven years after the tale we all know about Peter and Wendy.
Wendy is a grow up woman now, her only mission is to find a way to go back to Neverland and get her brothers back home. Sever years since Hook kidnapped them, Wendy is desperate since her uncle find her an husband, but all she just want is revenge.
When finally she finds a way back to Neverland everything is different…
Trusting Peter or trusting Hook, that’s not an easy choice to make.

I really loved this book, full of magic, action, slow burn and breathtaking parts. I couldn’t stop reading, I was hooked to the pages.

Wendy and Hook are my favorite characters of the book, she’s smart and fierce, he’s not what she was expecting. The chemistry between them is pure fire!
