Hearts of Gold #7

Broken Rainbows

Rate this book
It is 1942 and, in the wake of America's entry into the war, the small community of Pontypridd suffers its own - not entirely welcome - GI invasion.

The South Carolina Regiment billeted on the town soon cuts a swathe through its women, living up to GI's reputation as "over-paid, over-sexed and over here". For Bethan, whose husband is a POW in Germany, and her friend Alma, whose husband is missing, the arrival of the American officers brings new and dangerous friendships. While for Jenny, a bitter young war widow, it is a chance to bury her grief in a series of one-night stands.

The women are caught between loyalty to their men folk and the very real attraction of the GIs, and when tragedy strikes the mines, the tension reaches breaking point...

I’m enjoying the series and this book was no different. There are a lot of characters anyway in this series but I did find it slightly confusing remembering who was who with all the new American soldiers.

I didn't realise that it was the seventh Book of a series but I will definitely read the others in the series if I come across them.

Book 7 in this series is just as good as the previous 6. Broken Rainbows covers the last few years of World War II and explores the lives of the inhabitants of a village whose men have gone off to war and how they coped, not only with raising their children, but working in munitions factories, surviving on rations, supporting each other, and in the latter years coping with the "invasion" of the American forces to their little village, and the relationships that then develop. I will be sorry when I have reached the end of the series as I am enjoying it so much.
