A mysterious handsome stranger with a panty-melting smile finds me hiding in his hotel room and we settle the sleeping arrangements by me giving him my V-card.

He vanishes the next day but left me with more than memories.

Five years later, he shows up at my door with a proposal.

To marry his dangerous mob boss.

Telling him my daughter is his daughter is the least of my problems.

He doesn’t remember me, and that might be for the best, because he’s my father’s half-brother. I can tell him I’m adopted, but I have to get out of this town to protect my daughter.

But when we’re forced into one bed, and secretly devour each other every night, he thinks we’re sinning and says we can’t tell anyone.

Ever.

Only two pink lines will make our sinful secret impossible to keep.

Author’s Sinful Vows is a 45K standalone MF romance with forbidden themes, a fifteen-year age gap, one bed, a possessive alpha uncle (no blood relation), and a sassy heroine who makes the ultimate sacrifice to protect her daughter. The story is filled with tension and includes deliciously dirty open-door bedroom scenes, so please read at your discretion.

Deborah Garland is a new author to me, and I was totally into the storyline! I love mafia and age-gap romances, so this book was right up my alley.

However, there were some bumps along the way. There were too many side characters and it's confusing to keep track of. The plot had its quirks, especially with some unconventional relationships that left me raising an eyebrow. Darcy's decisions were... well, let's just say they were interesting. Despite that, I'm intrigued enough to give the next book a shot and see where it all goes!

Deborah Garland was new to me last month and I was excited to try another book from her. Savage King was a pretty big hit for me and I like her style of writing. This book is a forbidden romance with a secret pregnancy and estranged family thrown in to shake things up.

While I found the concept to be quite juicy and I got a thrill from the forbidden set up... I was disappointed with how certain characters reacted. I won't spoil it here but it left me feeling a bit apathetic towards the situation they find themselves in.

I will absolutely continue this series, but this one isn't one I plan to revisit. But if you like a little taboo without it being too over the top, this could be a great romance to try. The daughter was also adorable and made my heart melt for sure!

This was narrated in the duet style by Lexi Evans, DB West, and with special additions from Troy Duran. Though I had some issues with the story, the narration made it very readable and I enjoyed that aspect quite a lot.

Ewan & Darcy

This is a new to me author and I can tell you right now I can’t wait for more! I loved Darcy and Ewan! Their chemistry is amazing. Darcy was put through the ringer but that woman is beyond amazing and strong! This story was captivating and had me not wanting to put it down for a moment! That ending was a perfect set up for the next book and I cannot wait for Kieran’s story coming up next it’s going to be a wild ride!

way too familiar

Although this is not the full transcript of another book… it way TOO familiar to a book I’ve read and loved by an author I know and trust. May not be plagiarism… but it definitely is too much like it not to be directly taken from the plot of that book. Not to mention the same name.

I read book 2 first and loved it… this one seemed to drag and I found myself skimming pages. Instead of angst there was little kid interaction. It just didn’t work for me.

This follows Darcy, a few days out from 18 and makes a choice one night that changes her future. Now it’s five years later and she has been asked to marry to strengthen ties with an Irish Mafia family in the States. But when Ewan shows up to bring her to the States he is the delicious stranger from the night five years ago. But he’s not the one she is to marry, it’s his boss. What could go wrong?

I enjoyed this fast-paced read. It jumped straight into the spice early on which is refreshing. I was screaming that it was her uncle but not technically blood-related which is mentioned early on from the FMC perspective. Sadie is a cute kid and I loved the sneaking around it was delicious. Both pining over each other even though there is a forbidden element. It deals with a few dark topics so be mindful if you jump in.

*thank you valentinepr and author for this arc in exchange for an honest review.*

this is the first book in the Astoria Royals series and I really enjoyed this one. I felt like it was the perfect introduction to this new series and I can’t wait to read the rest!
Darcy and Ewan have a complicated history due to what happened between them 5 years ago. at the time they were only strangers who shared an explosive night together with no intentions of ever seeing each other again.
their story starts in the present day when Ewan goes to Ireland to get a wife for his best friend/mob boss Kieran.
I instantly liked Darcy and Ewan and how loyal they were to the people they loved.
Darcy is a single mom to a little girl and it was cute to see their connection. also, seeing Ewan with Darcy’s daughter had me swooning!!
this book was a short one so there’s insta love but it still had it’s heartfelt moments!

Sinful Vows by Deborah Garland

⭐️⭐️.75
🌶️🌶️🌶️

When Darcy is left to fend for herself after a girls night gone wrong, her only concern is to find a place to stay. Luckily, the flickering lights of Waterford’s motel seems to be a calling, and so does the room 7 key left at the empty front desk. Unbeknownst to the 17-year-old, the room is occupied by the heir to the Quinlan throne, Ewan—aka. her step-uncle.

When Ewan finds a bleached haired beauty laying in his bed, and their eyes meet, he knows he has a long night ahead of him. With few words traded, Darcy and Ewan ensue a blissful night of sexual awakenings, with the promise of no rekindling in the future.

However, fate has its own place in the plot. Darcy and Ewan meet again under new circumstances, Darcy’s hand is to be wedded to the head of the Irish mafia, and Ewan Quinlan is the one serving the news. When the two initially meet, Darcy immediately knows that her step-uncle is the same man who took her virginity five years ago, and is also the father of her child. Besides being enamoured by Darcy, Ewan has no recollection of her at all. ‘Sinful Vows’ follows the chaotic and taboo love story of Darcy and Ewan.

As the first book in the series, ‘Sinful Vows’ is a complete mess at the start. Numerous names are thrown around, and a dialogue is written that hints towards the reader having knowledge of this information. Deborah Garland required much more clarity in her writing at the start of this novel, whilst I understand it establishes context for the rest of the instalments, a good introduction and explanation on the Quinlan/Astoria world would have been extremely helpful.

Moreover, the prologue to this novel does leave a distaste for the reader—as we witness a 17-year-old Darcy have sex with a man who is 33. Not much needs to be said on that.

Five years later, the plot focuses on Darcy’s absentee partner and the secrecy of her bloodline not being a Quinlan—due to her being adopted.

Deborah Garland utilises a simple and plain writing style with the love story of Darcy and Ewan. Besides the sexual chemistry between the two, not much emotion or passion is given by her diction, disallowing for readers to be immersed into the world. Whilst this may not always be a bad thing for other novels, with a prologue that can easily deter the reader, bringing personality and sentiment through the writing, could have aid to the success of this instalment. ‘Sinful Vows’ is a simple plot and not much advancement or layers is provided. From the start to finish, the main challenge is figuring the paternity of Sadie and if Darcy is to be wedded to Kieran (head of Irish mafia). The novel is simple and I enjoyed it for what it was however, I desired for way more personality, plot development and clarity for the first book in a significant series.

Okay, so, let me start this review off by saying, this book just wasn't my cuppa, but that doesn't mean it was a bad book. It was written well, easy to follow plot, entertaining, and the narrators did a FANTASTIC JOB bringing the characters to life. They were honestly the highlight of this book and the main reason why I saw it through to the end (well, I also never DNF books, so that's why I kept going).

I love a taboo age gap romance as much as the next gal, but this one was just a little ick for me. I don't really want to say too much and give it away, but let's just say the taboo part was a little too taboo for me. Granted, it's nothing illegal and ultimately if the story was presented a different way (Darcy knew the truth, Ewan didn't) then I probably would've been more on board with it. However, Darcy and Ewan are great characters who are wonderful together.

One big issue I had with the story/plot was just the apathetic acceptance of Darcy/Ewan. Like nobody (I mean NOBODY) had ANYTHING to say about it other than full acceptance from the get go. I think this made the story a little more fairytale-esque and less believable (I know I know...it's a mafia romance which is total fiction, but at least try to make it a little true to life, eh?).

I listened to the extended edition and, honestly, if this was extended, I wonder what the original was missing.

While there's aspects to this book that I don't typically look for in books, I knew what I was signing up for when I picked up this book/audiobook. Personal preferences aside, this was a very well written book. I enjoyed reading about the Irish mafia in New York, but being very mild mafia, other than the idea of arranged marriage that seems to be pretty common. I imagine the next books have a lot more action and I look forward to reading them. The forbidden romance and age gap are the biggest aspects in this love story. Darcy ends up pregnant after a one night stand with a man visiting her country from America. She doesn't know his name and never expects to see him again... until he walks into her house on a mission to bring her to New York and present her to his boss as a potential bride. What unfolds through the rest of the book is spicy and full of surprises.

It was ok.

I read this along with the audiobook which is way I’m giving it a 3.5 ⭐️ rating. I did enjoy the audio with all those accents. It felt a bit too repetitive with the secrets and the lusting of the two MC’s.

No issues with the taboo relationship uncle/adopted niece, my TW are almost nonexistent. It would have been nice if there was more development of the characters falling for each other rather than having small pieces of them spending time together when not wanting to get them into bed.

A bit more drama with the Irish boss would have been nice, lovey dovey for some made men but it wasn’t a bad read in the end. Like I said the audio did make it better for me.

This was my second ALC and my first Deborah Garland and I really liked it. YES...the main trope of this was new for me...but I have to say, I got down with it. Even when it was REAL wrong.

The story of Darcey and Ewan is VERY unique. They meet in Ewan's hotel room when she is not even legal..but apparently over in Waterford, 17 is A OK. They exchange no names, no info...nothing. They then go their separate ways.

Fast forward a few years and Ewan once again finds himself in Waterford and at the door of Darcey...the story goes on from there.

This is the first book in the Astoria Royals series and I will put the rest on my TBR. The writing was great and I loved the story.

Now, since this was an audio book, let's talk narration. We get DB West for Ewan and Lexi Evans as Darcey. DW was great. The only issue I had with Lexi is sometimes I thought it sounded a tad Irish/Jamaican...but my hearing is not the greatest. We get a feature narration spot from Troy Duran and you can never go wrong there. This was done in DUET form and is there really any other way to listen?

Check this one out, it will make you question yourself...

I couldn’t get past the “not” incest..

Yes, technically they are not related. But it takes way too long for that to be revealed and the uncles thoughts are constantly “this is so wrong, she’s my niece, but I can’t stop” and it just felt icky. The writing wasn’t bad, but I truly couldn’t get past him getting it on with who he thought was his blood related relative.

I was intrigued and loved the storyline itself but it just fell a little flat for me. Taboo/forbidden relationships always hook me in, and I loved everything about this relationship.

There was just a lot going on, and not enough actual plot. I felt like much of it was a distraction or just spiiiice. Which the spice was spiiiicy, and I’m not complaining about that. Chemistry and tension was there 🥵 I just wanted a little more.

The couple: Ewan and Darcy

Romance trope: mafia
Series: Astoria Royals
Length: 205 pages

Plot: Right before her 18th birthday, Darcy meets and sleeps with Ewan, who is a stranger in the area, only there for a family event. He leaves, and having no idea who he is or a way to contact him, when she turns up pregnant, she can't tell him about the baby. Years later, he shows up on her doorstep, again for family reasons. It turns out that he's her dad's half-brother. Oops! He didn't know who Darcy was, but he needs her to fulfill an arranged marriage with another mafia family back in the US. They have some things to work out and some secrets to share with one another before anything can come of their time together.

Commentary: I know they're not blood-related, but it does feel a little naughty. I mean, isn't that the point of adoption, that you become family, end of? Which is, of course, what makes it taboo. Now, Darcy knew all along, but old pervy Ewan believed she was his niece and still...
One thing that did pull me out of the story a lot was all the set-up for the rest of the stories in the series. I assume that's what was happening - lots of information about the families around them and some of their situations implies that all those people will have stories later on. There were often times that I had no idea what the conversations were about because they were about fairly complex situations that hadn't been explained yet, and they weren't really being explained here either. I'm sure it would make sense later, but for now, I just wanted Ewan and Darcy's story. I imagine this is often a problem in writng the first book of a series.

Next book in the series: Savage King

Poor Lola missed out on some D. Lmao!!!
Sinful Vows was my wildcard. I don’t like to mix kids with my romance novels, but the blurb got me. The drama! How could I not read this? I’m so glad I picked this up! Sinful Vows is part of a larger universe and is Ewan’s HEA. And yes, I’m hooked. There is just something so endearing about a man caring for a child whom he doesn’t know is his kin. That protectiveness got me weak. A mobster at a tea party? Need I say more? Yes, please!

This prequel can be read and enjoyed as a standalone. However, they do mention characters from the Rebel Billionaire (Book 3 of the Billionaire Hart series) which gives a lot of background of what happened with Sabine and why Ewan is doing what he is, which is referenced throughout the book. Now, if you’re the type of reader who needs all the details, I’d start with Rebel Billionaire which can be read as a standalone. If you’re like me and you want to jump in, go for it. I kinda just ignored all the names/characters at the very beginning since it can get overwhelming. By the middle of it I knew exactly what was going on and who was who. Know your reading style and needs. I recommend reading this prequel first. It will give you an idea of the author’s writing style, the universe they are in and ties two series together. And if you like it, you can read the Billionaire Hart series as you wait for the rest of the Astoria Royals series to be released.

Spice level (1-5): 🌶️🌶️ nothing crazy

After the arranged marriage of Ewan’s sister Sabine and his best friend/Irish mobster boss, Kieran, backfires. Ewan is left out of options to secure his family’s safety in the upcoming mob war with the Russians. When a Hail Mary of a chance appears. His half-brother has a daughter of marrying age. A Quinlan. Ewan flies to Ireland in hopes of securing a bride for Kieran. But when he sees Darcy, not only is she the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen, but she’s also the one night stand he’s never been able to forget. How can he hand Darcy over to Kieran when he knows just how good Darcy feels? And when a darling little girl calls her “Mummy” just how is he going to spin this? His last chance just got a lot more complicated. Not just with the details but the bulge in his pants, for his niece and Kieran’s to-be bride.

I’d recommend Sinful Vows to all spice readers who want a quick read of semi taboo romance, (no blood relation). This is short and sweet and a great start to the Astoria Royals series. This does have themes of age gap, one night stand, unknown pregnancy, uncle x niece (no blood relation), past assault (not between MCs), arranged marriage (of convenience), taboo romance, and slight murderous intent. If any of the above bothers you, pick another book. If you’re not a fan of taboo romances, even if they are not blood related and one may think they are, you may wanna skip this prequel and just jump into the series.

Warning: Reading this book may make you want to talk with a slight Irish accent. May make you lie about your age. May make you lie about who has an STD. Don’t do that. May make you love strong men who love their daughters. May make you want to punch a Callum in the face. May make you realize “Life is short. Grab it by the balls. And marry the ducking woman you want.” Read responsibly.

thank you so much to deborah garland and the author agency for an ALC of sinful vows!

this isn't the type of book i'd typically read- but i do enjoy audiobooks (although i'm relatively new to listening to them), so i thought i'd give it a shot!

i don't think the audiobook itself was for me. maybe i'm just a dumb american but the irish accent sounded fake at times (like specific words sounded off) and (this is literally just a me problem) i personally am not used to the language/slang that was used.

i liked both of their voices but omg the guys voice!!?? i melted. i think their voices matched their characters well which was nice. it really helped with immersing you into the story.

in terms of the actual content of the book... it just wasn't for me, but it might be for you! i thought the descriptions were a bit odd at times and personally didn't like how she was originally 17 and he "could've been her dad" because thats how old he was... (again, personal preference). however, even though i don't necessarily love the tropes, the book did a great job of incorporating them in a way that felt natural and i ended up getting used to and liking tropes i usually would avoid.

the actual book itself i thought was written and read well, but the story just wasn't for me and thats no fault of the books, just my personal preference! i'd most definitely recommend this to anyone who likes mafia romance (specifically irish mafia), forced proximity, age gap, secret child trope, grumpy x sunshine, found family, and one bed trope!

if you are into those tropes, this book may be for you! the audiobook was nice as well and really brought the experience to life. personally, it just wasn't the type of book i tend to gravitate towards but its definitely worth a shot if you find that the description caters to you and is something you would pick up!

A new to me author With Deborah Garland and Sinful Vows was a relatively quick mafia taboo read. Set in the world of a brewing war between the Irish, Italian and Russian mobs, Ewan Quinlan travels to Ireland and the estranged side of his family to find his boss a bride who will strengthen his family’s ties to the Irish faction not realising he’s already intimately acquainted with his newly discovered niece after a one night stand on his previous visit, and this is the girl he intends to marry off!

This is an age-gap, forbidden romance that might make some people uncomfortable with its borderline incest trope but don’t worry things aren’t as black and white as they seem plus, in mitigation the two sides of the family have had no contact aside from a few letters. I liked all the characters especially the hero Ewan, I mean what’s not to love about a man who will take a little shopping for clothes for her doll and then takes her to a tea party – be still my heart! I did however feel that in starting with Sinful Vows I’ve missed something as there seems to be a lot of history between various characters and past events linking them that are hinted at but not gone into any great detail so I’ll have to check out this author’s previous books and see what I’ve missed .

"Sinful Vows" by Deborah Garland is a gripping and seductive romance that intertwines passion, danger, and the complexities of love. It offers a tantalizing mix of intrigue and heart, set against the backdrop of the Irish Mob.

One-night stand between two strangers that leaves a lasting impression on both. Darcey's encounter with a sinfully attractive man in a hotel room sets the stage for a series of unexpected and dramatic events. Deborah Garland immediately hooks readers with this intense opening, setting a fast-paced tone that persists throughout the novel.

Five years later, Darcey’s life takes an unexpected turn when the same man, now revealed as a Ewan the hitman for the Irish Mob, appears on her doorstep with a surprising proposition. The twist that he needs her to marry his boss, not himself, adds an intriguing layer of conflict and tension. This unexpected reunion stirs up long-buried emotions and sets the stage for a complex relationship dynamic.

Ewan haunted by his own demons; believes he is too broken for love. This internal conflict makes him a compelling and relatable character, as he struggles with his feelings of unworthiness. His protective nature and hidden vulnerability endear him to readers, who will root for his redemption and happiness.

Darcey is a strong and resilient woman, determined to prove that love can heal even the most damaged hearts. Her journey from a chance encounter to a deeply emotional and committed relationship is both believable and engaging. Deborah Garland portrays her as a nurturing figure, especially in her role as a mother, which adds a touching layer to the story.

The forced proximity trope is effectively utilized when the characters are trapped due to flooding, sharing a single bed. The chemistry between the characters is palpable, and Deborah Garland masterfully balances the tension and tenderness in their interactions.

The subplot involving Darcey's daughter adds an emotional depth to the story.

Ewan’s gradual acceptance of his role in the child’s life and his journey toward embracing a ready-made family is heartwarming. This element of the story underscores themes of forgiveness, acceptance, and the transformative power of love.

"Sinful Vows" also explores the darker aspects of life within the Irish Mob, providing a thrilling backdrop that keeps readers on edge. Deborah Garland's depiction of the criminal underworld is gritty and realistic, adding a layer of suspense and danger to the romantic plot. This blend of romance and suspense ensures that the story remains engaging and unpredictable.

Deborah Garland's writing style is evocative and immersive, drawing readers into the world she has created. The dialogue is sharp and authentic, reflecting the characters' complex personalities and backgrounds. The pacing is well-managed, with a good balance between action-packed scenes and quieter, more introspective moments.

In conclusion, "Sinful Vows" by Deborah Garland is a captivating and emotionally charged romance that deftly blends passion, danger, and the journey toward redemption. With well-drawn characters, a compelling plot, and a perfect balance of romance and suspense, this will sure satisfy fans of the genre. Deborah Garland delivers a powerful story about love's ability to heal and transform, making "Sinful Vows" a must-read.

This story is definitely not for the faint of heart in terms of the taboo aspect. I absolutely ate it up, even though, at times, I wanted to yell at the characters to just tell the truth so everything was out in the open.

Ewan travels to Ireland to convince his niece - Darcy - to marry his boss (and head of the Irish Mafia in Astoria). What he doesn't realise is that she's the woman he had a one night stand with five years ago, nor that she has a sweet little girl calling her "mum". But Darcy is keeping her own secret from Ewan once they're reunited - she's not his niece by blood. She was adopted by his half-brother but has her own reasons to go along with the plan to travel to the US.

What unfolds is an angsty, "we shouldn't" relationship between the two, which I could not get enough of. The age gap. The taboo surrounding the relationship. The spice between the two - it was off the charts - and the background plot of Ewan's past, as well as Darcy's, and hearing the two truly connect and fall in love, despite everything stacking against them. I wanted to kick Darcy up the butt once or twice to have just told Ewan the truth, because it would have fixed so many issues, but everything worked out in the end.

The narration of this book was amazing. I was hooked with West's Irish accent from the beginning, and he truly brought Ewan to life. The sheer emotion he could inject into his voice had me feeling everything with Ewan; I could honestly listen to him all day. And when the words turn dirty? I was fanning myself a fair bit, won't lie. He's a new to me narrator, but I definitely will be keeping an eye on further books with him featured. Evans returns to the studio after narrating the second book of the Astoria Royals series, and I was so excited to hear more of her Irish accent. She brought humour and fun to Darcy and was able to pull at the heartstrings in the emotional moments. The voice she provided little Sadie with was honestly sheer perfection; that little girl definitely stole the show whenever she was included in the scene, thanks to Evans. Throw in the addition of Troy Duran voicing Lachlan, and we had a stellar cast.

I honestly cannot wait for more of this series to come to audio, because I am absolutely obsessed with this series and how Garland has written them - especially if she keeps up the age gap, taboo tropes which I love beyond words.

Massive thanks to @theauthor.agency and the author for the ALC opportunity - all thoughts provided are my own opinion and left voluntarily.

Great start

I really enjoy Mafia stories and this Prologue into the Astoria series is a great start. We definitely would be a bit lost if we didn't get Ewan & Darcy's Prologue story. It leads into everything for the next book, outlines all characters and reasons for current events.

The story between the two if you read the Blurb people might find its taboo. I thought the same thing and didn't think I would enjoy for this reason. But I was wrong.
I found myself talking to the characters and on the edge of my comfy bed waiting to see what happened next. Not just from action but also from the emotions your feel for the characters and also the love story that grows. I've never read a book like it as it's a bit strange with the whole 'uncle' thing but I loved it.

The scenes weren't just steamy but they were romantic as well as sensual and sexy. Alot of books are steamy hot scenes but the scenes in this made you see it differently because you knew what the blurb said but you wanted to love between Ewan & Darcy to grow and develop. Deborah also made sure to give Darcy the respect and virtue that she deserved in 'giving away her gift'. Instead of Ewan having his way with her.

The twists in this story were unexpected and the brotherhood between Ewan & Kieran will be great to continue reading. The fact that after everything that had previously happened and that fact that those things cause disrespect in the Mafia world but they can still be there for their childhood best friend is nice to read. It's not just about 'respect'.

The ONLY thing I wish is that the book was longer. I wish that we got a few more chapters at the end to draw out the acceptance of the relationship. I would've loved the engagement, first scan (especially that he didn't see Sadie's), telling his parent's. Instead we just skipped forward and had a brief update of what's happened.

This book could easily be a series on TV. It doesn't have any of the high school bitchiness or inmaturity. Although there is a large age-gap it doesn't actually show in the characters interactions or actions. Sometimes you can get annoyed with a younger MFC but the maturity in Darcy is evident and while she fiesty she's also niave but tough. The two main character's are a great mix together.

I am hoping very much that we get a side series of the Quinlan family with the other 3 brothers. We get little snippets of their characters and they will be a fun read. Next up Kieran's book which we got lead into very smoothly at the end of this book.

4 1/2 ⭐️!! Great beginning w a taboo element!

This is the prequel to the Astoria Royals series that focuses on the Irish mafia out of Astoria, NY.

⛔️ Contains subject matter, and/or references to, acts that may be a trigger or offensive to sensitive readers. These include derogatory terms; detailed, steamy, 🔥🔥🔥 adult intimate scenes with dominance, submission, etc.; violence stereotypical of the genre, some referenced without much detail, some more detailed, these include fighting, assault, rape, torture, blackmail, kidnapping, murder, etc.

** It is a dark themed novella, with several different tropes: age gap, mafia, totally untouched female, anonymous interlude that results in a surprise pregnancy, as well as a taboo / forbidden edge when Ewan mistakenly believes that he has had ‘relations’ with his ‘niece’ and is shocked with himself when the attraction still exists.

The story between the MMC, Ewan, and the MFC, Darcy, ends in a HFN. The story itself however, ends in a cliffhanger to set up the next story in the series that features Kieran.

I enjoyed the scenes that took place in Waterford, Ireland, especially some of the terminology (I.e. ‘jacks’ and ‘bean-jacks’ for restroom).

The only thing that would have helped with setting the story universe is if more was included about Waterford. Not sure how rural it is, but according to what I found through literally a very quick search, it is a city of about 60,000, and it would have been nice if there could have been some type of mention / connection to the House of Waterford, since it is such a world renowned brand.

The story has lots of potential and I found it very engaging. I liked Darcy, the tension between her and Ewan, and how he is captivated by his ‘great niece’, Sadie, who in her own right sounds like quite a character and must look so adorable with her little glasses sliding down her nose …

There are a few grammatical issues that should be corrected, but nothing too egregious, or difficult to understand. I found some punctuation issues with missing commas and spaces before and after ellipsis: missing words; extra inserted words; inconsistent formatting in regard to possessive words ending in ‘s’. I uploaded my notes to goodreads for anyone interested.

Sinful Vows by Deborah Garland is the first book in the Astoria Royals series. As of right now there are 6 books in the series with the 7th releasing on July 19, 2024. The audio of Sinful Vows was released recently as well as a new edition, June 30, 2024. I am reviewing the audio but the review will stand for the ebook as well.

Sinful Vows is the story of Ewan and Darcy. Ewan is a hitman for the Irish mafia and Darcy is well, she is his kin, let’s just leave it at that. Darcy lives in Ireland and has a chance meeting with Ewan, five years later and he comes back and changes her life. Ewan needs a wife for his best friend and boss. He finds Darcy and she is the only age-appropriate Quinlan left to marry off. After a rainstorm and being stuck in the house together things change not just for Darcy but for Ewan.

I enjoyed this story. I would recommend heeding the authors trigger warnings. There is sudo-incest and a secret child. So if either of those are not your cup of tea, skip this one. However, if you are like me and have no triggers check this one out. It is a pretty quick and easy read and it made me eager to read the rest of the Astoria Royals series. I hope to get a bit more of Ewan and Darcy in the series. I enjoyed their internal struggles and the push and pull between the two of them.

I rated this story four stars. It didn’t have any kind of surprises or “it” factors that would make it a five star read for me but it is good nonetheless and worth reading! I listened to an ALC (advanced listener copy) of this story and I liked the narration. I am a big audiobook listener so I have a lot of experience with good and bad narration. This narration is good and since I am not Irish and am not very familiar with the accent I thought it was presented well by the narrators. It is also a dual narration which you don’t hear much of and I liked it!

So, if you don’t mind the triggers, like the tropes, and like an accent check this one out!!

Ewan and Darcy had a one-night stand when Darcy was just about to turn 18, resulting in her being pregnant and giving birth to a baby girl, but Ewan will never know about it. Until 5 years later he comes back into her life, as her half-uncle who offers her a marriage to his Irish mob boss. Darcy and her parents are in a dire financial situation, so she has no choice but to take this offer. This means, to conceal the truth that she was the girl he had ONS with or the fact that the child was his. Conveniently, Ewan didn’t remember her (due to her hair color) and the fact that Darcy was adopted.

Oh my, where do I start? I was actually pretty excited about this book but all my excitement quickly crumbled down with how absurd the story was. I was never a fan of secret baby/child, but surprisingly, that wasn’t even my biggest issue with this story. For one, I don’t get how Ewan doesn’t remember her just because her hair color changed, it’s not like they have sex in the dark. Then we have Darcy who selfishly kept the fact that they are not related. Now, I understand her motivation, sure, she wants financial security and more kids, but then she keeps coming on him and of course, he can’t deny her. It was frustrating, to say the least.

In saying that, I still have an interest in this series. I’m intrigued with Lachlan’s character, and looking forward to reading his book.

As it turns out, after listening to over 100 audiobooks, accent is a “MAKE OR BREAK” thing for me. I’m quite particular with the kind of accent, and how age-appropriate the narrator sounds (ex. if the character is supposed to be a teenager or young, I don’t want to hear a deep old man/woman voice, but that’s just me). If you love Irish accent and can understand them, then this is for you, unfortunately for me, I didn’t enjoy it. I didn’t mind the male narrator, as his accent wasn’t too thick, but I can’t stand the female narrator, and her voice is just so mature for a teenage Darcy. Once again, this was a particular thing for me, I’m sure if you love Irish accent, you will enjoy it.

I found the story charming and enjoyed its brisk pace without unnecessary suspense. There were some funny moments that I appreciated. The secrets, the reasons behind them, the conflicting emotions, and the strong attraction between the characters kept me engaged. Ewan's stubbornness and Darcy's resilience were captivating, and the steamy scenes added an extra spark. Despite the taboo nature of the relationship, Ewan's allure made the book irresistible. The chemistry between Ewan and Darcy was intense, and their secrets didn't overshadow their connection, which I liked. The family dynamic portrayed in the book was also something that I loved. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of it.

I couldn't stop reading from the very beginning and enjoyed every part of this concise story. The first book in the Astoria Royals Mafia Romance series follows Ewan Quinlan as he arranges a wife for Kieran O'Rourke, the Irish Mob Boss, kicking off the excitement.

Ewan, the responsible oldest son in his family, is a true family man. Although I found him a bit irritating at times in Ireland, I still like him. He, along with his brothers, runs a protection and investigation business, with Kieran O'Rourke as their main client. There's more to the story, but I won't spoil it for you.

Darcy Quinlan is an amazing character, much stronger than I could ever be in her situation. I admired how she stood up for herself; when her fiery Irish temper flared, she became a fierce lioness. I also appreciated her determination to earn her way and her fearlessness in stepping in to help others. And Sadie nearly stole the show - what a sweetheart she is. The tea party scene, when I imagine it in my head, still fills me with all the warm and fuzzy feelings.

I'm eagerly anticipating the second book, Savage King. The ending of this book is truly tempting, and I can't wait to delve into Kieran's story.

Sinful Vows is the first in the Astoria Royals series (currently 7 books) and man, did it start off with a bang! I listened to the audiobook and the narration/accents were spot on. If you enjoyed Credence, then I definitely recommend giving this a read/listen! In this dark romance you will get: taboo/forbidden love, billionaire romance, large age gap, one night stand/one bed, Irish mafia/mob, arranged marriage and touch her and die....spicy smutty goodness!

Darcy is a young girl, just looking for a good time and wanting to experience life. She decides to have a one night stand with a foreigner with no names exchanged and lose her V card under her own terms. Five years later, a man shows up on her doorstep after arranging a marriage with her father to his Mafia boss....and she comes face to face with her mystery man once again.

I loved the Irish setting and the narrators did a FANTASTIC job bringing the story to life. The sexual tension and angst between Darcy and Ewan were perfection! The taboo nature of their situation was not as triggering for me as it may be for others...not sure what that says about me BUT I loved it. The spice was great and I did not feel like it overpowered the book and the interactions between the characters and their families was heartwarming. I loved Darcy's boldness and her base desire to not only get what she wants out of life but do whatever necessary to keep her loved ones safe and thriving.

Overall, it was a great 5 star read for me and I can't wait to continue to series - in audiobook format if possible because accents just drive me wild!!
