About the author

Chie Shinohara (篠原千絵) is an award winning Japanese manga artist best-known for Red River, known in Japan as Sora wa Akai Kawa no Hotori: Anatolia Story. She has twice received the Shogakukan Manga Award for shōjo, in 1987 for Yami no Purple Eye and in 2001 for Red River.

Aside from her comics work, she has also written several prose novels. She has published the six volume Big Draw Daughter Hatsu light novel series, as well as five gaiden (or side-story) novels related to her Red River series. All of these were illustrated by Shinohara herself.

This is fun mostly light weight stuff. Naïve is the best word I can use to describe what I feel most strongly while reading this manga.

Omg so book 9 just became the most well used soap opera plot EVER.

Welcome to book 9 in which there is a secret baby born! That's right that age old trope of the secret pregnancy comes to light as Kail is confronted with an old lover who says her baby boy--conveniently named KAIL--is well Kail's son.

Mind you as with the Lannisters of GAME OF THRONES the blond hair ALWAYS wins out so let's all put our thinking caps on about who the father REALLY is. I'll tell you a secret he's already dead so that narrows it down quite a bit yes?

Also while Fake Ishtar was a conniving bitch before, Yuri's nature (and logic) won her over and she's her faithful pimpservant Ursula now. She's fun and Hadi an the twins like her. Also I'm pretty sure she just put Kash in his place.

Meanwhile poor Ilbani doesn't know what to do with any of them and just wants Kail to get laid...

Now that’s how you shake the whole town about someone else’s identity! Haha! Such a gratifying moment! And I never knew I would come to love the fake Ishtar and her antics. The volume ended with a new situation plotted by the queen dowager who just doesn’t get tired of ruining Kail’s image to people—but I do get tired of this repetitive situations. Can you let a woman breathe for a moment? This is getting even more hard to chew and swallow. I need a palate cleanser.

Yuri reminds me a lot of a D&D character I once played... but like, 100000% better! (haha I ended up hating that character and she was SUPPOSED to be more like Yuri but became more whiny and needy and useless... ugh... anyway that's a different thing!) And even though she's slightly clingy and has a bunch of self doubts when it comes to her relationship with Kail, she has a huge heart. I love that she stands up against all odds to do what she believes in, which almost always has to do with helping other people. She is a pretty great female lead.

Still rooting for the two of them!! (Kail and Yuri)

What first drew me to this series was the romantic historical aspect. I loved how a modern day girl gets pulled back into the past. I don't know what it is about those stories that attract me so much, maybe it is the difficulty for the girl of fitting in and having to rely on the guy so much to be able to get along in the world.

I would really recommend this series to fans of Inuyasha, it has a lot of the same concepts.

I found this series on a mere coincidence but it quickly became one of my all time favourites. I read the entire series in 1.5-2 days. It was truly wonderful and a joy to experience.

I still can’t make up my mind about this series. On one, hand, I think the way the plot and relationships are progressing is great, and the recent conflicts have been entertaining and had satisfying conclusions. On the other hand, I just don’t feel excited to read this.

I should enjoy it; the characters are making great developments and there are moments I really like, but it’s not gripping me like other books have, and I’m not very invested in the main romance.

In this volume, I liked seeing Yuri help the sick and poor folk once again and turn them towards Prince Kail, and I’m glad that everyone recognized and praised her for her strength and hard work. The plot twist at the end was very intriguing and I’m interested to see how that plays out. However, it seems like it’s not going to be much of an issue as far as how it affects our main couple.

Anyway, I think I’ll put this series on pause for a little while, and pick it up again if I feel the urge to do so.

Nuevos problemas con la reina Nakia que esta controlando a muchas personas, por lo que Yuuri debe enfrentarse con una mujer que se hace pasar por Ishtar, nuevamente Yuuri me gusto muchos, si tiene momentos en los que actúa muy impulsivamente por lo que se le complica, pero me gusta su personaje y aca tenemos a esta mujer que sobre el final me dejo sumamente intrigada el cambio que tiene y quiero saber mas sobre ella.

Good first half, not so much when Princess Guzel claims her son belongs to Kail.
I especially liked when Kail arrived in Katapa looking for Yuri & exposed the false Ishtar as well. People's reaction to Yuri is also the best.

I am very glad the "fake Ishtar" arc was short, completing 3/4ths of the way into the volume. The rest of the volume has some interesting developments. I'm excited to see where this goes.

Yuri va a conoscere la falsa Ishtar e nuovamente si trova immersa fino al collo dai malati della febbre dei sette giorni che, scusate l'ignoranza, non ho ancora capito a quale malattia si riferisca.

Mentre leggevo, pensavo ad una cosa. Yuri è così amata da tutti perché viene da un mondo in cui tutte le persone sono considerate uguali. Non ci sono differenze di razza, colore, religione... Anche se sulla razza, con i giapponesi, si potrebbe discutere a lungo. Comunque, lei mette in pratica dei concetti che per noi sono familiari ma che non lo erano ai tempi degli ittiti. Trattare allo stesso modo il figlio della serva e l'imperatore, ad esempio. Prendersi cura dei malati e dargli un posto dignitoso dove curarsi... Ed è ovvio che la gente la adori.

Un'altra cosa che mi colpisce è che l'autrice continua a ripetere di quanto sia normale l'apparenza di Yuri, tanto che tutti si stupiscono di quanto insignificante sia. Però tutti cambiano opinione su di lei non appena la vedono occupata in uno dei suoi progetti. Come se fosse ciò che facciamo a renderci belli e non solo l'apparenza esteriore.

Ursula, da quando non recita più la parte della falsa Ishtar, è un personaggio molto divertente. Specialmente quando le inventa tutte per far finire Yuri e Kail a letto insieme...

Things that happened in this volume:

Ursula has convinced the mayor of Katapa that she is Yuri thanks to some help form Urhi. Nakia's henchman.

She also managed to get Yuri thrown in with the seven day fever victims as punishment for being rude to her.

Yuri is initially afraid that she will catch the fever like Kail's father did and die but she soon learns that she is immune to it thanks to inoculations she got as a child in Japan.

She works on improving the conditions of the poor who are sick while Ursula lounges in comfort. Spending extraordinary amounts of money on food, clothes and entertainment.

Yuri does such a good job caring for the sick that when she is in trouble they rise up in a riot to help her.

Prince Kail finally arrives and meets up with Yuri. Ursula tries to seduce in order to become his concubine for real. He rejects her and considers killing her. But Yuri intervenes and allows her to live after hearing why Ursula did it.

When Nakia's plan to destroy both Yuri's and Kail's reputation through Ursula fails she has a backup plan in the form of a 'son' of Kail's.

I re-read from teenager to grown up. Not the best idea...

This may be my third re-read of this series. I am pretty sure I read it twice in the first two years of it's release. I was young, I loved it. It was romantic. But after reading it this year (maybe +15 years later....), I was wrong. I just saw wrong turns, within wrong turns. Maybe as an adult, you see things differently.

If you,ve read a manga or book during your early years and end up reading them much later in life, you may end up like me- loving a series in the past and ruining it as the adult in you laughs for once enjoying them... :(
