The hilarious story of a girl who will do anything to win her best bud's heart! Inspired the anime!
Tomo and Jun have been best buds since they were children, but now that they're in high school, Tomo wants to be more than friends. Too bad Jun just sees her as “one of the guys." Tomo may be a tomboy, but she's determined to prove to Jun that she's a woman, too!
Contains Volumes 1-3 of the manga in a single omnibus paperback.
4.5 Stars. A great story with a solid cast of characters that are each very unique and have their own perspective on the main relationship. In addition I've never come across a manga with a four panel layout I quite enjoyed it as it made the story seem more fast paced than average. Overall whenever I can pick up the rest of the series I will. Can't wait to see how it ends.
I’ve read this before, so it was fun to be able to go back and read it now that I own them! Very funny and in 4-Koma format, so easy to start and stop wherever you wish! Looking forward to picking up the next omnibus!
The premise for this manga would have been a great starting point for a lot of more modern conversations about teens and sexuality/gender identity. Instead it falls back on really old school anime/manga tropes like panty shots, boob grabbing, and miscommunication between the sexes. I was surprised to find out it was released only a few years ago.
There are other, more open minded manga out now that don't fall into such rigid gender stereotypes. A lot of the comedy really does come from everyone mistaking Tomo's gender, and after a while you just kind of roll your eyes every time someone notices her boobs.
There are funny moments to be sure, and some of the characters are really entertaining, but with the frustrating lack of any progressive characters, it feels like a product of the 90s, rather than the present. I can see how this is appealing to a lot of people, but it's not for me. I'd rather read the myriad of other openly LGPTQIA+ manga and graphic novels that handle this topic with more care and attention.
There's also a really creepy B plot about one of the side characters, who is the child of two very underage characters (13 and 16). It's treated as romantic and "cute" but as the parent of a 12 year old, I was adequately horrified at how it was handled. The omnibus ends on this note actually, and left a bad taste in my mouth.
I absolutely love this series. Its funny, heartwarming, adorable, and thoroughly entertaining. This starts off very simple and rather silly, but over the course of the series it gets a lot more grounded and serious (the whole thing is still very lighthearted and easygoing though don’t worry). The 4-pannel comic format works very well and results in a stream of rapid-fire constant jokes and punchlines. This entire series is very short and could honestly be read in one sitting, but I think you should take your time and enjoy it.
The characters are the standout element of this series. The plot is relatively simple and straightforward after all, so it is the characters that really make this special. In the later half of the series the characters get fleshed out through a lot of flashbacks and changing POV’s, and the character development of each of the protagonists is very satisfying. The main protagonists love story was fun and cute, but my favorite part was the friendships with the side characters and the other relationships.
This story is mostly grounded in reality and despite the silly premise it was mostly realistic. There is certainly some manga-logic and goofy manga-style-hijinks throughout, but nothing that would make it inaccessible for a reader new to manga.
