The third book in the Solitary Tales series for young adults, Temptation follows the soul-wrenching twists of Chris Buckley’s journey as he heads deeper into a darkness that threatens all he loves best. As a reluctant student at Harrington High’s summer school, Chris meets a fun-loving senior girl who offers a welcome diversion from Chris’s past. Soon Chris no longer searches for the truth about the town of Solitary. He no longer tries to pierce its shadows. He no longer questions his role in its mysteries. He makes a new choice: he runs. What he doesn’t realize is that he’s running the wrong way—and is very close to being beyond any choices at all.
New York Times bestselling author Travis Thrasher has written over 75 books, from fiction in a variety of genres to memoirs and children’s books. He has collaborated with filmmakers, musicians, athletes, comedians and pastors. Travis lives with his wife and three daughters in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
For those of you who have been holding your breath in anticipation for the third installation of this amazing series, it was worth it! Prepare to be taken on yet another journey into the crazy town of Solitary.
I am fascinated by how Thrasher manages to have each of the books in this series take on such a different life. In the first, it is a pure love story, and we find ourselves with lots of questions and very little answers (FROM ANYONE). In the second book, Chris is dealing with loss and moving on, learning to trust others as he braves through this new life. It has some intense moments as we see just how evil this town can be. However, in the third book, everything from before is blown away. Chris manages to push away every bit of hope, every person he cared about, and turns into a somewhat-normal, teenage guy. He gives up and as frustrating as it is for the reader (seriously, I wanted to strangle Chris a couple of times!), we see that this is the journey he has to take to come to terms to what is happening.
We also get lots of answers. However, Thrasher is clever enough to give the reader just enough answers that we are satisfied, but still left wondering what is going to happen next. We find out that life in Solitary is not what it seemed when Chris first arrived, and that maybe his family is more than meets the eye.
Overall, this book was raw, real, action-packed and truly thrilling. Your only disappointment will be that it is all over so fast.
**A special thank you to the free galley of this book by the publisher, David C. Cook.**
Please take note that there are some minor spoilers in this review.
Another awesome book I got from Netgalley. Another awesome book from this extremely talented author.
I absolutely love this series, because not a single string of action, not a single word is out of its appropriate place. And also because everything in it is so unbelievably complicated. So complicated in fact, that you get the feeling that the tight knot of events and mysteries and unanswered questions would never ever get untied. And it's so complicated because people - real people - are complicated. Only a true writing master can portray fictional characters as if they were real, tangible, and Thrasher does a marvelous job of it.
During the entire novel I felt like I knew Chris as if he was in my own circle of friends. I felt like he was a boy from the neighborhood, whose life I was privy to. It was an incredible experience, walking alongside him, seeing through his eyes, feeling through his heart, and figuring things out through the cogs and wheels in his brain.
Absolutely fantastic!
Well, I can't say that all his decisions were great, but hey - we're talking about a 17 year old boy here. A teenager who's been through so much, and the miracle here was that he's still standing, and he's still willing to fight. Yeah, he got pretty beat up by the reality of who was pulling the strings, but I can't really blame him. Fighting hadn't really won him any freedom. Or answers.
Now the temptation to give in is stronger than ever and it almost felt like Chris was ready to just let go and stop fighting.
The twists and turns were incredibly strong. I had no idea what was going on half the time, and I got blown by a heap of surprises. It was an amazing experience... not knowing what would happen in the next scene and just anticipating some sort of an outcome.
I was on an emotional roller-coaster from the very first chapter till the very last one. The tides kept on coming and going, leaving me speechless. It was like a storm had been unleashed, ready to strike over and over again over my exposed heart. And I loved it!!
Sure, there were times when I just wanted to kick Chris unconscious. Like when the only thought in his mind was sleeping with Lily. Or when he kind of abandoned his mom. Or especially when he left his mom in Solitary, while knowing that the bad guys would be pissed at him. Seriously, I was pulling my hair out as I read that he took Kelsey with him, but left his mom!!!! Urghh!!! Silly boy!!! But that's all a part of getting to know the characters, getting to love them, and just feeling that somehow they're real. Not just a flat image on a page of text.
Anyway, the answers we got in this book were so vital, so dark and sounded so realistic, that I was creeped out the entire time. And I can gladly say that Thrasher is a master in making the readers forget themselves into the story.
Also, I can't not wonder the following: How on earth is Chris going to pull off that task of denying Jesus, when all he wants is to hold on to Him with both hands??? That would be something interesting to see, that's for sure!
Which is to say that I just can't wait for the next installment to come out, so the mystery would finally be revealed, and HOPEFULLY the bad guys would get their rightful punishment.
So I picked up Book One in the Solitary Series about a week ago. Exactly one week later I just finished the third book "Temptation" and this series is one of the best ones I have read in a very long time. "Temptation" picks up right where "Gravestone" left off and suspenseful ride does not let up one iota. Sure (as with any series) there are things in the story that are easy to figure out early on, but for the most part Thrasher has an EXCELLENT series going here. The only thing that bums me out is now I have to wait about a year for the conclusion to be released.
"Temptation" is a fantastic read that is not only a spectacular Young Adult novel, but this book (and series) will definitely appeal to adults. Overall Temptation is a spooky, horrifying hope-filled novel... It's a strange mix but it works great!
Travis Thrasher is establishing himself in my eyes as the master of dangling the carrot. That basically sums up my thoughts on the third installment of the Solitary Tales.
In Temptation, Chris has all but given up. He wants to get on with his senior year and get out of Solitary. Plain and simple. It seems like the more he wants to let go, however, the more the town and its secrets grab hold of him.
Once again a pretty new face comes into Chris's life. Once again she seems close but yet too far away. Once again all is not what it seems. In many ways, the first third of this book reminded me of the first in the series and the new love interested was heavily reminiscent of Jocelyn. But the new girl in Chris's life is NOT Jocelyn. Getting involved with this girl seems to be just what the doctor ordered for Chris: a pretty girl that into him to just be free and spend time with in the summer before his senior year. But, as with Solitary, nothing is what it seems.
It's not all about 'the girl' though. It's about Chris being tempted everywhere he turns. It's about him being tempted to get involved with a girl he knows should have no interest in him. It's about him being tempted to just say blast everything and fall into the welcoming arms of the Pastor Marsh and the mysterious Staunch. It's about him being tempted to just accept whatever fate has in store for him. But Chris is a strong character. He's strong from having to deal with his mother's issues. Strong for being able to deal with all the death, questions and mysteries and crazy haunted moments thrown his way during his stay in Solitary. He's strong because he's determined not to lose anybody else on his watch.
This book is frustrating. And I mean that in the BEST way possible. It seems that no matter what Chris tries to do, no matter if he tries to be himself or if he tries to be what people expect him to be he JUST CAN'T WIN. Also, for every question that's answered (or seemingly so) more questions are raised. Thrasher gives us just enough to keep the endgame slightly out of reach and I, for one, am waiting with baited breath to see what exactly fate, destiny, karma, whatever, has in store for Chris Buckley.
This is a book and a series as a whole that has made me constantly monitor the progress bar at the bottom of my kindle. Why? Not because I want to see how soon it will end, but because I find myself wishing that it wouldn't move. Every time I read one of these I don't want it to end. It's just that good.
It's going to be a long wait for the next installment, that's for sure. Fantastic book, great series. This is one you shouldn't miss.
Temptation, Travis Thrasher's third volume in the "The Solitary Tales" tetralogy, has arrived and with it readers begin to get the answers to the important questions that series protagonist Chris Buckley has been asking since he discovered that things aren't quite right in Solitary, North Carolina.
In some ways 16- (and later 17-) year-old Chris Buckley is a rat trapped in a maze he didn't create. As he searches for answers, he keeps running into dead ends. But when the answers are given and he finds himself closer to having the truth set him free, the light of that truth is blinding. Thrasher knows how to build the suspense to great heights before he begins revealing the tidbits that keep Chris--and the reader--searching for answers.
Pastor Jeremiah Marsh continues to be a creepy presence in the series and serves as Chris' seducer, tempting Chris to take on a mysterious role in Solitary. As the manipulation of his life continues, Chris finds himself alone and with no place to turn for help.
Readers are finally introduced to Chris' dad and Chris realizes that the reality of what went on between his parents is different from what he believes. Mr. Buckley's arrival in Solitary comes at a crucial point in Chris' journey to uncover the town's secrets, and a conversation with his dad allows Chris to make an important decision leading to end of this book.
Temptation delivers enough chills to satisfy readers of supernatural suspense and will remind Christians that we are indeed fighting a spiritual battle. Thrasher chooses to end the book at a turning point for Chris, with Chris making a major decision, and with the reader left hanging until the final book in the series, Hurt, is released in January 2013.
Note: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in an exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are mine.
Move over Stephen King. Travis Thrasher is da man! If creepalicious is your thing, then Temptation is the book to you. In my opinion, it’s the creepiest of the series thus far.
I confess there were times I wanted to slap hero Chris upside the head. In this installment, he makes some pretty stupid choices, even though he knows he’s making them. Dare I admit that I resorted to calling him an idiot during one scene? Yeah. It earned me a few strange looks as I read on the treadmill at the gym.
But that sure didn’t stop me from loving this book. As if the plot weren’t gnarly enough, a few new twists and turns are introduced—one I totally didn’t see coming—which is exactly what attracts me to a story in the first place.
As eerie as Temptation is, the tale ends with an incredibly hopeful tone. Though there’s definitely some big conflict coming down the pike, without giving anything away, for once I think Chris will be okay.
If you haven’t read books I and II in this series, grab them off the shelf first. Then go ahead and settle yourself into a comfy chair with a beverage of your choice at your side.
In the third book in the Solitary Tales, Chris Buckley is on a mission. Not a mission to protect people he cares about. Not a mission to discover who took some of those people or how to expose and stop them. No, Chris's new mission is to ignore, to enjoy life and be free. Model-gorgeous new girl Lily shows up just in time to aid this mission. Chris doesn't get why she's into him, but he's no longer asking questions like "why."
Solitary is the cliff's edge. Gravestone is the shove over into freefall. TEMPTATION is the plummet, but Chris doesn't get to plummet the way he wants to, arms outstretched to embrace an unhindered descent. Inconvenient tree branches keep smacking him on the way down, breaking his fall--branches like answers to questions he stopped asking. People (one particular person) refusing to give up on him though he shuts them out. A crisis with his mom that he can't ignore. And revelations that shatter his apathy and rekindle the anger and prod him at last to start asking questions about truth itself.
In fact, this entire book is a flood of revelations and answers. The reader is rewarded with scene after scene of, oh, that's who he is! and oh, that's what happened! and I was right, I knew it! Plenty of questions remain going into Book Four (as it should be), but I'm now fully trusting this author. I'll know everything I need to by the end. And I anticipate agreeing with Travis Thrasher's story decisions. I have so far.
At one point in TEMPTATION, I nearly didn't. Without spoiling anything, I can only say I thought the author was recycling a Shocking Plot Element from Book One--oh, no way, this does not work twice, I can't believe he expects me to accept this TWICE!--but Chris's reflections on the two events showed me that both were necessary. The contrasting aspect is what matters, not the comparison. (And the vagueness of that sentence sounds almost ridiculous. Sorry. If you've read the books, I think you'll know what I'm referring to.)
Chris is not admirable throughout much of this book. Many of his decisions are selfish and/or dangerous. He sometimes treats people badly, and he sometimes knows he's doing it. Constantly admirable characters annoy me, so I'm okay with this. But the real reason the book works (and could be used for an advanced fiction Character Motivation class) is this: his actions are plausible given who he is and what's gone before. He is a traumatized teenager with no adult direction in his life. He tried making a difference before, and look how that turned out. He tried trusting people before, and look how that turned out. He's witnessed things that shouldn't be physically possible, and he has no way to predict or explain them. Add to all this a persistent assault from spiritual forces of evil, and I can believe Chris would make every ignoble or ill-advised choice he makes.
That said, the change germinating in him at the close of this book is a relief. As a reader, I am ready and eager for Chris to take steps down the right road.
For the first time with this series, I did the smart thing: I ordered and received HURT before finishing this one. What I expect from the final book: final answers. Wrap-up of dangling plot threads (a few of which go all the way back to book 1). Complete exposure of the evil (defeat of it would be even more satisfying, but we'll see). Return of a few characters. Salvation for Chris (on all levels). Hope and light.
Unreasonable expectations, you say? Only if you haven't read these books.
Chris Buckley has been struggling with a lot of issues since he and his mother moved to Solitary. That's just what seems to happen to when you move here. You find yourself a bit isolated from everyone else. It's hard enough trying to fit in and when you finally make friends, something happens so them. They move away. They disappear. Or they are murdered.
Chris attempts to come to terms with what has been happening in this town, and once again he finds he is alone. Aside from a small black dog named Midnight, Chris wrestles with the inner demons inside himself. Those that constantly blame him for things that have gone wrong. That as a sixteen-year-old boy he should have been able to put a stop to things in Solitary. But he's being watched. Every single thing he does, he's being watched. He still can't trust anyone in town and he's afraid more than ever to make friends. So when faced with dealing with spending the summer once again back in school at Harrington High, he tries to make the best of it by keeping to himself. With only a few other people in his summer school class and a teacher that wants to be anywhere but here, Chris finds himself digging a bit deeper into the darkness surrounding the town.
This time he attempts to confront Pastor Jeremiah Marsh who promises him anything his heart truly desires if he is willing to seek answers with him. It seems like Chris is the only one centered around the dark happenings in this strange town where secret buried tunnels beneath the town and people who can't die have something to hide. Will Chris face his greatest temptation in facing the darkness head on or will he become part of what the town is trying to hide?
In the third book in the Solitary Tales series by Travis Thrasher, Temptation looks at what happens when I believe you're pushed to the end of your proverbial rope and sanity at the same time. You begin to question what is real and what isn't. What is worth a risk and what isn't and it's at this stage that Chris is finally facing his darkest fears and those that seem to have the answers he seeks. But once again, those that move in to become his allies, are they just playing him for their own purposes or do they truly have good intentions at helping Chris finally get to the bottom of the darkness and evil that thrives in the town of Solitary?
I received Temptation by Travis Thrasher compliments of David C. Cook Publishers and Net Galley for my honest review and have to say, when you pick up anything by Travis Thrasher you are instantly hooked in the world he creates for his readers. It borders on the darkest places in our minds and show the reader just where the true spiritual battles are fought, in our minds! I rate this one a 5 out of 5 stars and now, can't wait for book 4 due out next year. For those of you who have never read a book by Travis Thrasher, think Stephen King, but with a Christian twist you don't see coming!!
Poor Chris. In the short seven months since he and his mother moved to Solitary North Carolina, he's encountered failure and loss, grief and anger, unanswered questions and mystery, lies and betrayal, horror and the supernatural. And now, a kid who could definitely use a vacation from it all is forced to attend summer school. Such fertile soil for sowing seeds of TEMPTATION. His will and spirit now broken, Chris's hopelessness and inadequacy against the dark forces at work in this town change his resolve to give in and be left alone, to fit in and get what he can, to start acting like the teenager he is; becoming what those close to him have been telling him all along that he isn't. Helping him on the path of shunning the old is an acceptance toward those who've been bringing the chaos to Solitary and a beautiful new student, Lily. In this third book of the Solitary Tales, a series known for its suspense and horror, we get what we came back for though presented differently from what we’re accustomed to. Each book has had its own flavor, and in a Fictionaddict.com interview, Travis told listeners that this book would take on a different point of view which has been realized through the darker outlook Chris now has. Through sunglasses tinted with angst, old characters are shunned, new characters are taken in physically as opposed to emotionally, and many of the darker incidents are viewed callously and matter of fact. But by no means does this softening make it a less enjoyable story. TEMPTATION is arguably the most important book in the series so far, bridging the gap between fear and courage, inadequacy and hope, ineptitude and strength. This is where discovery and answers turn Chris to action. Yes, answers! While not everything gets revealed here, there are some very satisfying conclusions to some of the questions raised in SOLITARY and GRAVESTONE, and while most of these answers are revealed through dialog, astute readers may find stand-out symbolism in this book worth looking into on their own. I found the inclusion of this interactivity to be an exciting aspect of the book, giving me chills at times even as it offered a little deeper insight into the roles of some of the characters and the goings on. For me, this series has been a remarkable page-turning find that I can't get enough of. From characters that grab your heartstrings to horrors and suspense that makes putting the book down impossible, this series has it all. While SOLITARY had my heart shaking an angry fist at Travis, and in GRAVESTONE that same fist was up stifling a shocked gasp, here in TEMPTATION it was fist-pumping an excited cheer of satisfaction and hope that will carry me to the anticipated release of HURT in 2013.
What would you do if your search for the truth meant that those important to you ended up disappearing or hurt because of their connection to you? What would you do if your mom kept descending deeper and deeper into the haze of alcohol? What if there seemed to be no purpose in fighting the evil threatening to overtake you?
These are questions Chris Buckley is running from in book three of the Solitary Tales. Sentenced to summer school for no conceivable reason, Chris is soon side-tracked by a gorgeous senior girl who offers him an escape from his struggles. Chris suddenly finds himself facing temptations to lose himself in new friendships, in parties and drinking, and in all-consuming thoughts of the possibility of having sex for the first time. However, when events in his life spiral out of his control, he finds he must decide whether he will embrace the darkness of evil or submit to the Light.
Thrasher's third installment in the Solitary Tales echoes the hopelessness of today's teen culture. What's the point in believing in something beyond yourself, beyond doing what feels good? Why not just lose yourself in the pursuit of fun and pleasure and doing what's right in your own eyes? And yet it also exposes this thinking for what it is - utter lies. And it does so in a highly entertaining, imaginative, and at times creepy manner. If you haven't yet found yourself endeared to Chris Buckley, then you may not want to pick up this book. But if you already feel like taking Chris home and giving him a normal life, if he already seems to be the face of a searching teen in your own life, then you will love this installment with it's darkness, it's questioning, and it's hope. Thrasher has created a character that will long live in my memory.
As with previous novels in the series, the pacing is once again spot on, and as more and more answers emerge as to what on earth is going on in the town of Solitary, you will find yourself hooked even further and desperate for the last book in the series.
I once again find myself highly recommending the latest book from Travis Thrasher, and give it 4.5 out of 5 stars. I can't wait for the final book, Hurt, coming out September 1, 2012.

AARRGGHH!!! I hate you Travis Thrasher!!!! Not really, but now I have to wait! I’m not a patient person and you are forcing me to wait! I HATE waiting!!!!! With the number of trilogies flooding the market, I assumed that this, the third book in the Solitary Series, would be the end of it…but it wasn’t. I feel like I am being led on! Now I know how Kelsey felt in Gravestone!
OK, so in this third, and not final installment of the Solitary Series, Chris is in Summer School and crushing on Lily, a new girl to Solitary. She seems just as into Chris as he is into her…but she wants to take is slow. Painfully slow as far as Chris is concerned.
Chris is still a lost soul. But he decides to put all the craziness behind him and kind of ignore it and see if it goes away. While that works for a while, ultimately he gets hit from beyond left field and is forced to deal when his Mom almost kills herself accidently and Lily starts to get threatened. And the evil that permeates Solitary is none other than one of Chris’s ancestors. We are only partially clearer on what he does and how Staunch and the Pastor are involved.
Not quite as many twists and turns in Temptation but all the suspense and desire to see what happens next remain. Chris’ Dad appears and we learn a little more about him…but not enough to satisfy my curiousity. The spiritual side of this story is more prevalent here as we are building up to the final showdown…and Thrasher is the King of Cliffhangers! I devoured Temptation in one sitting and am still hungry for more…but alas I have to wait. Did I mention I HATE WAITING???? Yea, I thought so. Hurry up Thrasher…I still have questions that need answering!
Chris Buckley and his mother moved to Solitary, North Carolina after his parents separated over the issue of his father’s faith. After months of pressure, Chris just shuts down. Forces to attend summer school, he believes that he is stuck when Lilly walks through the door. Then when she notices him, his angst turns to joy and he forces all the scary things out of his mind and focuses solely on Lilly. After his mother tries to commit suicide while on a drinking binge, Chris believes that he is on his own with total freedom. Behind the scenes, though, manipulation increases forcing him to open his eyes.
In this third installment to Thrasher’s Solitary Tales, the mood lifts a little as Chris finds a new girl, but the level of evil increases. The surprises continue keeping the reader locked into the series. Still a good bet for anyone looking at the horror, suspense genre with the added benefit of a Christian slant and no blatant profanity or sex scenes.
Temptation is the continuing saga of 16 year old Chris who has moved to his mother's hometown of Solitary. Chris during summer school meets Lily and who gives him hope, however, is it a false hope. As always with this series, you have questions, but in Temptation you begin to have answers but with the answers, you have more questions. Chris grows up some during this time and begins to seek the right answers. The story deals with spiritual darkness and how the characters (and in life) we may not be aware of it. In this case, it is pretty much in your face. There is one more to this series, I am sure that it will not answer all the questions, but I am ok with that. All questions are never answered, faith is not having all your questions answered but the power of who God is.
Just a note, this is not a preachy read, however, it is Chris' struggle who does not have faith, and is by all accounts maybe dealing with some anger with God. A read I think all might be able to relate. It is a combination of books I have read including the The Shining.
Travis Thrasher has broken the mold on Christian Fiction, Young Adult Fiction!
Chris Buckley has had enough, he is battered, bruised, emotionally drained, so he tries to turn his back on the horror and escapes to his father's. In doing so, he begins to get the answers he has been desperate for. He is beginning to get that he is crucial to all that is happening in Solitary, really get it. The battle for his soul, his family's dark history, his losses, his fears, many of his/our questions are answered, bit by torturous bit.
Again, I am in awe of Travis Thrasher's ability to draw the reader in, scare the pants off you and make you live each page as if you were there!
The writing was great, scary, edge-of-the-seat style. The characters were fantastic! Even the book covers for this series are a perfect, edgy fit! This isn't just a YA read!
"Temptation" is the third book of the "Solitary" series, which gets progressively better with each book. After the events of the first two books, protagonist Chris Buckley goes into a rebellious/shutdown mode, in which he decides he no longer cares about the evil in Solitary...only to learn that is exactly what his enemies want. A lot of major revelations come in this boo as the stage is set for the final resolution.
I knew Lily couldn't be trusted and how does he mom not know what happened to her? I mean he was in her car. So is there vampires in the boxcar? I really hope the last book answers the questions, its driving me crazy. I also kinda figured his mom would get dragged into it at some point and who the mountain man was.
A few more questions are answered in the 3rd installment of this series.. but I still liked the second book better.. this one was a lot more focus on a teen boy crazy in love.. both of which I am not nor really interested in.
In Temptation we finally get some answers as well as a lot of symbolism and new questions. The important bridge between the unfolded story of SOLITARY/GRAVESTONE and the upcoming TEMPTATION.
My review: "Temptation is the third book in The Solitary Tales. If you read my review for the second book, Gravestone, then you will know that I was not a fan. It left me extremely disappointed. So when I picked up this book, I was very wary.
Thankfully, I had nothing to be worried about. I was pleasantly surprised by how the story seemed to up the ante compared to the previous book. From the very beginning, I was hooked. It was like, “Oh hey, this is what I remember Solitary being like. Yeah, here's the suspense I remember!”
I felt bad for Chris because he just does not have the best luck with girls. He really doesn't. As I was reading, I would shake my head at his stupid comments and think back to when I was a teenage girl dealing with clueless boys." Compared to the first two, I was pleasantly surprised by this one. It's got a number of issues, and the writing style will [probably] never click for me. But, it made for some solid work.
Though, I absolutely think that if books 1 and 2 were cut, and this one had been given a few more words to work with... and did away with some things... it would make for one heck of a thriller. Alas, we get what we get.
Anyway, onto the next and final one in this series.
I enjoyed this volume of the series more than books #1 and #2, perhaps because there was some resolution and more action. In addition, the protagonist seemed to wise up a little after another couple of misadventures, which seems to point to some maturing on his part. He may even step up to hero status in book #4, the final in this series. I'll let you know when I've read it.
Even darkness is light to the Lord. Praise GOd! I love that GOd isn’t ever surprised at the things that happen to us. I think teenagers should read this story. I wasn’t quite as fond of the first two stories, but this one had a much better ending.
Travis Thrasher has pened a novel that leaves you constantly at the edge of your seats. His characters are colouring. I am looking forward to reading other works from him.
There are some cheesy and overwrought bits, but overall I really love this series and find the characters and conflicts interesting! I can’t believe I’m almost done with this series!
I won the last book (Hurt) which kinda sucked, because... well it's the last book and who wants to read the final book of a series first? However, I was really grateful to receive all four of the books and tore through them all.
I will just say that I think he is a good writer, really. However, I just think the stories are a bit too formulaic and then little bits of weird things are thrown in to spice it up that just don't make sense or are left unfinished.
Very predictable story about a boy who does not like God, hates his dad who found God, and pretty much thinks people who have faith are dumb. However, through events that transpire he will probably start to have faith and then go all Godly. It's not marked as Christian Fiction on the back for shelving, but I'm finding online reviews are shelving it that way. My particular package came with pamphlets about how I can be a soldier for Christ (something like that, and to be fair it's the publisher and not the author) which made made me weary. Someone complained that it was "pushed" on them - I didn't feel that way at all. Once I knew what I was reading, I took the story as it was and could look past the bible verses.
What I really disliked most (although it was a little creative but executed poorly) was the author added a "dessert" which is advertised as a little bonus section after you read. It's just his iPod list. Booo.
I like a lot of the songs that isn't the problem, but I thought this was a little pretentious. There are several created playlists for the books, and then one was pretty arrogant enough to include a play list "For the Movie" and then adds to the list several other songs - including songs from other movie soundtracks like Donnie Darko. No. Don't touch my Donnie Darko! ;)
Even one of the chapters quotes too much of Mad World (Gary Jules style, and not Tears for Fears although they are mentioned several times in the other books).
Overall, great story telling, intriguing environments, great details and imagery, just a little messy in some parts.
After reading Solitary (really liked it) and Gravestone (loved it) plus the short B-Side story to the series Thrasher wrote, Something I Can Never Have, I was anticipating Temptation very much!
The prologue was great and grabbed my attention. I loved how it showed a little of what was to come at the end of the story, but without giving away key things.
I got a little annoyed with Chris in Temptation - mainly during the first half of the book. I just didn't really care for the girl craziness and I ended up putting the book aside for a while because of that. I did, however, end up liking him again during the last half - especially near the end.
I didn't like when Chris seemed so preoccupied by Lily and the possibility of "being together". I know he wasn't a Christian yet, but I just didn't care for that aspect of the story. Also, there is a cuss word in the book. If you're someone who doesn't care for these types of things, you'll now be prepared.
I liked the supernatural elements in Temptation. While I did get some answers to what is going on in this book, I still have some questions and can hardly wait to read Hurt and find out how things will turn out for Chris.
Overall, Temptation was a good read. The first half was okay, but that last half was great! Should you decide to read it, you should definitely read Solitary and Gravestone first as this series is best read in order.
*I received this book for free for my review. I was not required to give a positive review, only my honest opinion - which I've done. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.*
Title: TEMPTATION Author: Travis Thrasher Publisher: David C. Cook April 2012 ISBN: 978-1-4347-6417-1 Genre: Young Adult/Christian mystery/supernatural suspense
TEMPTATION is the third book in Mr. Thrasher’s Solitary Tales Series. It is the story of Chris Buckley’s soul-wrenching journey as he goes deeper into the darkness that threatens all he loves best.
Chris is a reluctant student at Harrington High’s summer school, and there he meets a fun-loving girl who is a welcome diversion from Chris’ past. Chris stops searching for truth about the town of Solitary, and no longer tries to piece it’s shadows, or his role in the mysteries surrounding it.
So, Chris makes a new choice—he runs. But he doesn’t realize he’s running the wrong way—and is very close to being beyond any choices at all…
Okay, I’ll be honest. I didn’t read Solitary or Gravestone so I was totally lost when I tried to get into TEMPTATION. I didn’t know the previous story, and I felt like I was dropped into the end of a very confusing drama. So, if you haven’t read the first two books in this series, then make sure you do before starting TEMPTATION.
TEMPTATION isn’t just for young adults. If you like supernatural suspense, then TEMPTATION is a book for you to consider. We are fighting a spiritual battle, and TEMPTATION is a good reminder of that. The book ends with Chris needing to make a major decision, an excellent draw into the final book in the series Hurt, releasing in January 2013.
I am not a fan of supernatural suspense, nor mysteries, so I am definitely the wrong person to review this book. So, even though this book didn’t exactly excite me, it might be just the one you’re looking for. The writing was great, scary, edge-of-the-seat style. The characterization, fantastic. So, basing my rating on that, four stars. $9.99. 336 pages. .
