As champion of the Goddess of Fate, Marluck had it fame, power, status—until his divine favor was stripped while fighting a freakish fledgling god-beast. He somehow became an a reviled fallen paladin, scorned by all. A sentence from which most never recover.
Bereft of his powers and cast down lower than the cobbles, Marluck stumbles across the Oathbreakers Guild, where other ex-holy warriors like himself meet weekly and share their woes amid cheap ale.
It helps, for a time. But when a stranger in the group whispers of four holy sites where other Oathbreakers found favor once more, Marluck is helpless to resist the siren song of renewed succor within the fold of his goddess. Together with three eccentrictic paladins of wildly different faiths—each with demons of their own—Marluck sets out on a do-or-die quest to find favor once more.
A hilarious, knockout fantasy from author of The Dragon’s Banker.
My SPFBOX review of Oathbreakers Anonymous is published at Before We Go Blog.
“I shouldn’t have to tell you how much of a bad idea a party comprised of nothing but paladins is. What are you going to do if you come across a problem you can’t solve by smiting it? Or a flying enemy—or even a ranged enemy?”
Oathbreakers Anonymous is Scott Warren’s rambunctious Dungeons & Dragons-inspired adventure about paladins gone astray. The tale is told from the first-person perspective of Marluck of Kalash, a half-orc paladin in the service of Skein, the Goddess of Fate.
In the opening prologue, Marluck loses favor with his goddess for uncertain reasons. Without Skein’s blessings, Marluck also loses his raison d’être for paladinning. He joins an Alcoholics Anonymous-style support group called the Oathbreakers Guild, trying to come to grips with his situation and find a new calling in life.
Opportunity for redemption soon comes knocking in the form of a new quest to locate four holy sites. Marluck recruits a motley crew of ex-paladins from his Oathbreakers cadre, and the group soon sets off questing.
Oathbreakers Anonymous has a self-conscious feel that walks the line between serious epic fantasy and self-parody. The story is full of in-jokes for Dungeons & Dragons fans and an assortment of low-brow humor. While I found some of the jokes amusing, the comedic aspects of the book largely fell flat for me.
The other major problem I had with Oathbreakers Anonymous is that I never connected emotionally with the characters. We are given some of Marluck’s history, but we never learn enough about his companions, causing many of the side characters to feel interchangeable. It was also never believable to me that these characters are all former paladins.
Although I failed to connect with Oathbreakers Anonymous, fans of Dungeons & Dragons may wish to check it out, especially if you are in the mood for a more lighthearted adventure.
If you’re looking for a book set in a fantasy world, one that has you laughing and filled to the brim with loveable characters, this book is for you. The characters: Characters are often what make or break a book for me, and the characters were amazing. They felt like actual people rather than the flat characters that I often find in many books. The humour: The humour was what made this book stand out from the many other books published in this genre. Many scenes had me laughing and needing to share it with my friends. From singing werewolves to a ram that may or may not be magical, I never knew what was going to happen next. The ram: I originally thought the ram would be a minor character, only there to add more humour to the story but as the story progressed, I grew to like it more and more. It has such a fun personality and was always helping the characters out of terrible situations. Who would I recommend this to? I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to pick up fantasy without feeling overwhelmed. The plot is as interesting as one in an epic fantasy, but the humour and simple writing makes it much more accessible for everyone, especially if you are new to the fantasy genre. Thank you: Thank you to Vivacious Readers for the free arc, it was such a fun read!
First. I adore this cover. Warren has truly captured the story and characters.
This was my first time experiencing Scott Warren’s writing and it won’t be my last. Oathbreakers Anonymous was delightful, hilarious, and immersive full of action, adventure, twists, and turns. While this is entirely from Marluck’s perspective there are numerous secondary and tertiary characters that I also got to know and love. This is one of those books that’s hard to describe without spoiling anything. It felt like the perfect amalgamation between the epic quests and adventures of Lord of the Rings with the humor and characters of The Princess Bride.
Marluck turns from aimless to desiring redemption. He finds friends, and foes, in the unlikeliest of places and from a variety of backgrounds and species. Ultimately learning that his epic quest is about more than he ever imagined.
This is a full and complete story with no cliffhangers. Even a charming epilogue. However Warren has definitely left the door open for Marluck to have more adventures in the future.
Narration: Mark Garkusha’s narration was like listening to a flawless full cast performance. Characters brought to life with charmingly unique yet consistent voices, accents, and personalities. He’s wonderful at evoking the emotion of Warren’s writing. Loved every minute of this.
While I own the ebook, I did receive a copy of the Audiobook from the narrator and am leaving an honest review.
This is not a full review. I read through the beginning of all 300 SPFBOX contest entries. This was a book I wanted to read more of.
A hot-headed Orc paladin of the god of fate is stripped of his power when he picks the wrong fight with a mountain godling in this 1st person fantasy with a terrific voice.
The voice of this fantasy is a stand-out. It is irreverent without being ridiculous. Humorous without leaving its story behind. It is grounded and engaging and feels effortlessly written.
The narrative flows in the voice of the MC, dipping from present action into setting details, steeped all the while in wondrous references to the Loom goddess, weaver of fates, and other bits of fantasy flair.
Simply put, this is off to a terrific start. It’s straight forward in its exposition, but with character-centered flair. We learn so much about the magical world of the story through our MCs succinct description of his divine abilities and of how magic + time can turn a beast into something godlike.
I found these sections particularly absorbing & creative and would want to read more for this alone. Add to it the voice of the MC, & the world altering (for him) turn of being suddenly divested of his abilities, and I have everything I could ask to keep turning the pages.
I wish I could go on and on about it, but at a certain point there’s little more to say than wow and oh boy! I’ll add there’s some wonderfully weird and comical details about board, their chosen weapons, and the form this godling takes.
This has been an effortlessly engaging read. Each sentence pulls me along to the next. The first chapter alone is worth the paltry cost of the ebook. Sold! I’m in!
Wow what an adventure. First off let me just say I was totally fascinated by the cover so much so I jumped in head first. What I wasn’t expecting was to be pulled into a wonderfully world. This is a fairly new author to me but I’m a fan already. This is a Fantasy Adventure with a Sci-Fi feel at times. The characters are simply wonderful and made the story come to life. I had a lot of fun reading this book more than I imagined. Get ready for quite the quirky adventure where you will find yourself laughing o
Really enjoyed this book! Parts were laugh out loud funny, and the message towards the end made me reflect on my own life. The tone about two-thirds the way through does get darker and not so humorous, as does the plot, but it all meshes well in the end.
I don't typically read epic fantasies and am still a bit new to them and the usual characters. As such, I had to look up some of the roles and descriptors in order to understand what was going on, and even then there were a few I didn't fully understand.
Still, overall a good read with a thought-provoking point made.
🙊 Some cursing 🗡 Copious fighting, but minimal gore 🚫🌶
Thank you to Voracious Readers Only and the author for a free copy of the book! I'm leaving this honest review voluntarily.
4.5 stars “When the Divine needs an intervention” When I read this, I knew it would be good. This wry sense of humour is right up my alley. Oathbreakers Anonymous by Scott Warren is a very funny adventure fantasy tale like no other that is wonderfully twisted, original and unique. This well-crafted tale will have you laughing out loud at the wit and antics of the fallen paladins and the woeful Oathbreakers Guild who need to leave the ale to set out on a journey to redeem themselves to the gods. With unexpected twists, intrigue, action and humour it will delight those who like a well-crafted quirky tale. The wonderful and strangely endearing characters are well thought out and well written that you can’t help but love them all. I hope there is more of these characters to come. I look forward to more from Scott Warren!

Misplaced Faith. My biggest goal for this year was to discover new authors Scott Warren is a new one for me. The cover, while interesting it was the synopsis that made me say “why not”, as in give this book a try. Also, seeing the genre humorous fantasy gave me intrigue as I had never read or seen a book in that genre before. Being a gamer as well as a big bibliophile, I found that the game Neverwinter kept coming to mind while reading this book. Paladins, no matter the race, are great warriors, fighting for their gods and continuously earning their grace and power. A great deal is known about paladins’ great deeds and victories over evil or darkness, but what happens to those that lose their grace, their power. Disappearing from history the author finds a way to fill in the blanks of history in this world. Marluck is a half-orc, who was a great paladin until the day he lost his powers. Lost and searching for purpose the newest oathbreaker finds a group of his fellow ex-holy warriors. An unfair punishment Marluck would do anything to get the “divinity” back that was taken from him, to return to the good sides of the goddesses. Hearing of possibilities to get back what he had lost Marluck will stop at nothing to reach his goals. Will Marluck and his little group find a location in time? Is it truly possible to get his “divinity” back, to return to what he was before his fall? From page one I was glad I took a chance on this author and his world. The way the author not only writes but how he builds up the images in your mind of the world they live in. The good, the bad and the hilarious, I found myself smirking at the details. While the characters are not everyday men and women it was interesting to see how relatable the different races are to everyday real-life humans. I was even able to Invision people in my life as the characters bringing a little extra humor to the story personally. This book kept me engaged from start to finish, entrapped in the story and the mystery of how things would work out and come to an end. I hope to see more books set in this world and I will certainly be going back and looking through the authors’ other works just to read more of this talented author’s work.
Marluck is a paladin of the Goddess of Fate and a good one at that, he was renowned for his strength, abilities and connection to his Goddess, he had fame, money and arrogance, or at least he was, while he was on his last mission to help a village being preyed upon by a God-beast, a mix of godling and wild beast who are more dangerous the older they become and during that battle, Marluck loses his Goddess’s favour, he loses his connection and everything that went along with it. Now, he is scraping by as an Oathbreaker, a fallen paladin who most people tend to avoid like the plague, the lowest of the low, how far he has fallen, but he is not the only one in this predicament, he manages to find others in the same situation, others who have fallen foul of their patrons and become Oathbreakers Guild.
While Marluck settles into life as an Oathbreaker, he becomes close to the others in the Guild as they share stories of their past lives and current woes while drowning their sorrows in cheap booze, but after one of the meetings, he is pulled aside and he is told of rumours about the possibility of redemption and a return to his position and he is more than tempted to do so. After meditating on his choices and deciding that he at least wants to try, he shares his plans with the others and not everyone agrees with him and fewer offer to go with him, in fact most of them deem him a madman, there are however, four others who decide to join him.
Fast forward to a few days later when the unlikely group have done their research about the possible holy sites where they can regain their deities favour, gathered supplies, settled any outstanding affairs and decided on a plan of action, the rag-tag group set off towards their first destination, but will they be able to find the redemption they desire, or will it prove to be a rumour alone and a wasted journey after all? This is a fantasy adventure which is a definite page turner throughout, as friends, enemies and indifferent beings combine into a humorous yet heart-warming journey of self discovery and entertaining mishaps which keep you hooked until the end.
Oathbreakers Anonymous was a review copy I received free from Voracious Readers.
This book is about a band of ex-paladins abandoned by their gods going on an adventure to regain their powers. It's comedic, light-hearted (mostly) and fun, but it comes out of nowhere with some shock twists and drama. We follow Marluck of Kalath, a half-orc (unusual protagonist) who was a paladin of Skein, god of Fate, who weaves on a loom (clever naming convention), before and after he loses his powers in a battle with an upcoming god-beast boar.
I found the writing good and enjoyable, it was descriptive enough to keep me interested. I liked the character interactions, but admit that their voices did start to blend together. I wasn't really able to keep a clear picture in my mind of the characters and what they looked like, but I had a lot of fun with their dialogue and how they supported each other in fights - I especially liked Grumki and Ram. I thought the world building was really great, quite unique amongst a sea of fantasy novels. I really liked the part about the man-wolves as well.
There are a few science fiction and fantasy references in the book which were a bit eye-roll worthy, but the author did make them a little more story-relevant and woven into the dialogue. (There is a Skyrim reference but instead of an arrow, it goes off onto a story about a hydra eating someone.) I'm not sure that I needed the book to be spaced after every single paragraph though, and it did start to feel quite long around the 80% mark, but I still had fun reading it. I really like the cover art, too, it's very classic fantasy.
One of the best books I've gotten from Voracious Readers and a good choice for fans of comedic fantasy.
I was initially drawn to this novel because of the title, I am, and always have been a massive nerd. I was playing D&D 5e before it was fully published and was still being called D&D Next. So when I saw a novel referring to oathbreaker paladins, I was immediately intrigued. The author did not disappoint, the main character was a half-orc paladin who called his club a ‘Smite Stick’. The novel kicks off with Marluck, the main character, losing his paladin powers and falling into a depressive spiral. Marluck ends up joining an AA style group called Oathbreakers Anonymous, and going on a quest with an eclectic group to try to regain their powers, in a scene that has fond echoes of LotR.
Once the plot kicks off, things happen at a breakneck pace. Which, while a good thing, is almost too much. We aren’t given any time to process what just happened before we are once again onto the next leg of the quest. That is honestly my only real issue though, the author did a wonderful job, made me like the characters, and made me laugh many, many times with all of their jokes and nerdy humour. It was very obvious that the author is knowledgeable of pop culture, the nerdier the better. You could tell immediately just from the references and jokes that made it into the novel, I even got introduced to my new favourite deity, Chocklar the god of hangry snacking. Chocklar will be a part of my D&D campaigns going forward for sure!
This is a interesting and captivating fun fantasy adventure. The author does an amazing job of creating characters that grip you and don't let go. I was fully invested in Marluck's journey and learning about all the people he meets along the way. This story is unique and filled with twists and turns that I couldn't put it down. I was gripped from beginning to end.
Marluck has been disgraced and discarded as part of the Goddess's of fates champions. He had everything and lost it all. Now he's on a quest to find his way back to claiming his position and everything he has lost. When he teams up with other disgraced and discarded people they band together to journey and reclaim their places. Each person's story is different but they share one goal. To get back what they have lost. What follows is an adventure filled with twists and turns as they all follow their own paths to hopefully find redemption and to return to their lives as they were before.
This is a great fantasy adventure filled with moments of laughter and fantastical beasts that really spark the imagination. The story is unique and captivating. I loved it
If you enjoy Dungeons-and-Dragons-style romps where it's clear the DM is having a great time subverting expectations, this is for you! An incredibly enjoyable tale of Marluck, a fallen paladin desperate to renew his vow to the goddess who abandoned him, and the unlikely comrades he meets along the way. Each character fits beautifully into the archetype you think you know - the grumpy old codger, the dour and stubborn dwarf, the mighty paladin who cares only for justice - and then bashes the archetype's edges and breaks bits until the character is unique and fascinating. I fell in love with each of them one by one as their stories were uncovered and couldn't stop hoping they would all get to watch their dreams come true by the end.
This really is a rollicking tale that feels comfy and familiar but never gets boring or predictable. You'll never quite know what's around the next bend in the road, only that it's going to be a delightfully fun ride! I absolutely recommend it to anyone who enjoys a great comedy fantasy that can make you laugh, make you think, and then make you laugh a whole lot more.
Want a story that will keep you up at night because you just have go know how it ends?? That is this that Book and so much more Absolutely well done Fantasy finds you with Marluck who had it all, until he didn't. In this fantasy world divinity rules everything and if you lose it you lose everything. Those without their divinity meet in an anonymous guild called the oathbreakers guild and basically complain about their life with one another. Sure does it help to commiserate...yes but it wasn't enough for Marluck, he wants his life back. There are s whispers that there are four locations that may hold the key to regaining all that they lost and Marluck and a few others can't resist setting out to find them in a comical, colorful well done adventure. This book is so descriptive, the characters are relatable and you can't help but want Marluck to succeed. The dynamic, humor and sarcasm is extremely well done and I laughed out loud so many times. You won't be able to put this book down!
Oathbreakers Anonymous by Scott Warren is a great adventure story that leaves you wanting more.
Marluck had it all as the Goddess of Fate's champion until his favor was revoked after a bizarre battle with a young god-beast. He somehow develops into an Oathbreaker, a fallen paladin who everyone despises. A phrase that most people never fully recover from. Marluck finds the Oathbreakers Guild after losing his abilities and being cast down to the level of the cobblestones, where he meets with other ex-holy warriors on a weekly basis to discuss their problems while drinking cheap beer. It temporarily aids. However, the siren melody of fresh support within the fold of his goddess is too powerful for Marluck to ignore when a stranger in the group talks of four holy spots where other Oathbreakers won favor once more.
Every page had you hanging on every sentence and I couldn’t wait to see what would happen. It is a very unique story with even compelling people. The story really transports you into this world. I couldn’t put the book down.
Oathbreakers Anonymous by Scott Warren. This is not my favorite genre so I wasn't too sure about this book but I actually loved it! Its so fast paced and it kept me up way late reading. Its a fantasy story about divinity ruling everything and without your divinity you are really nothing. Marluck was in good shape for a while and then he lost his divinity so he's trying desperately to get it back. Going to the Oathbreakers Guild ( a place where people who have lost their divinity go to complain) and hearing all the talk Marluck hears there may be 4 places that they can find a key to regain his old life. Reading this book made me want to be friends with Marluck and I could relate to him so much. Its bad enough that Marluck has lost everything but he has no idea why. Will he be able to regain his life back or will he be a member of the Oathbreakers Guild forever? Read this fun, fast paced book to find out!
I really enjoyed this book, I wasn’t really sure about it because I’m not a gamer or that big of a nerd, so I wasn’t sure how much I was going to like it, but it really surprised me, and I found myself devouring this book as fast as I could. It was filled so much with action, adventure, laughs, interesting characters, fantasy, and mystery. This story centers around the character Marluck who is on a quest or journey of his own to redeem himself, were he loses his powers, and goes down a spiral. He then ends up joining a group of unlikely characters called Oathbreakers Anonymous, and they try to regain their powers. This story line was very interesting and intriguing, the worldbuilding to it was very well put together that I felt like I was right there with them. I was hooked right from the beginning and couldn’t out it down, with all the twist and turns into the book I needed to know what was going to happen next. Recommend this book.
Oathbreakers Anonymous is a fantasy adventure filled with action, adventure, fun, fantasy, mystery, and great characters. The story centers around the character of Marluck who is on a journey to redeem himself. He gathers a ragtag group of unlikely heroes and heroines to help him gain back everything that he has worked so hard for after an unfortunate fall from grace. The ensuing journey teaches them all some valuable lessons. The storyline was intriguing, and the setting was described so vividly that it immerses you fully into the fantasy world of the world of the characters. The characters were endearing, and I found myself rooting for the ragtag group to overcome the obstacles thrown at them and come out on top. A great read with some twists and turns that will pull you in and have you reading until the end.

Down on his luck, he discovers the "Oathbreakers"...other beings that were throw at the waist side as well...banding together to find their way again.....will Marluck succeed in the end....definitely give this book a chance and find out!
This is an adventure, and I loved every character and their story and the journey. Totally fantastic.
It started out as a formulaic D&D story, full with its trope. That took a sharp left turn pretty quick though.
Marluck and his band's story is hilarious, honest, and sometimes touching. Something can make you laugh and caused you to think deeply in quick succession.
Worth a read? Yes. It's a standalone as well (although I don't mind more relaxed story with Paladins), so, it's a fairly less investment, time wise.
'But power, real or borrowed, will invariably go to one’s head, especially one who comes into their own so young. His confidence was quick to hop the proverbial fence into arrogance.'
“I shouldn’t have to tell you how much of a bad idea a party comprised of nothing but paladins is. What are you going to do if you come across a problem you can’t solve by smiting it? Or a flying enemy—or even a ranged enemy?”
A well-crafted, funny and entertaining adventure story that involves many twists and turns on its way to a satisfying conclusion! This story exists within an established "Dungeons & Dragons" idiom and will seem familiar to those with knowledge of the species and classes that exist within it. From that established base, the story quickly takes off! At its root, it's a buddy adventure filled with three-dimensional characters, quite witty humor, unexpected twists and a surprisingly established lore for a one-off book. This is an easy read that was very entertaining to read. Highly recommended and I hope the author Scott Warren writes more books set in this world!.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Oathbreakers Anonymous by Scott Warren is a zany, madcap romp that had me hooked right from the beginning. It felt like a bit of a Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams epic fantasy adventure with a D & D flavour. This highly humorous and unique story highlights Mr. Warren’s superb storytelling abilities, as he deftly weaves a fantastical action-packed adventure that takes us on a quest for redemption with a motley crew of quirky characters. What happens makes for a very entertaining read that left me wanting more of this world (and characters), in the best possible way. I hope Mr, Warren has plans for more works set in this ‘world’. Looking forward to more from this talented author! Happy Reading!
Honestly, when I saw the cover I was not sure it was going to be my style - but I am SO GLAD I gave it a shot, book reviews can really make a world of difference! This book had me in stitches, the settings were vivid, the characters are memorable and fantastic...just what a stellar book!
It starts right from the beginning, drawing you in with action and stupendous world building. There's a vibe I never thought I'd enjoy with the fantasy style, but Marluck feels like he could be a best friend and you just want to see where he goes in his redemption story. Along the way, the Oathbreakers Guild shows how quirky, hilarious, and oddly relatable they are in such a fantastical journey. Truly a treat to read.
I’m really not sure how I haven’t read anything by this author before, but I am SO glad that part of my life is over! I stayed up reading this book because I couldn’t put it down to do anything (sorry chores) and I don’t regret one bit of it. The way they pull you into the story is subtle but irreversible. The humor throughout this book will have you laughing out loud and disturbing your family members. The world is so beautifully crafted and vivid that I felt like I was on the adventure with Marluck and the Oathbreakers myself. Even if this doesn’t seem like your type of book, do yourself a favor and pick it up. You will find yourself enjoying it before you know what happened, so say goodbye to your to-do list for the day. I’m off to find more of this author’s books!
Marluck was once a paladin, but after making the mistake of not listening to his God he broke his oath. Without his powers he turned to booze. Until he stumbled upon oath breakers anonymous, people in the same boat. He hears rumors of being able to gain his powers back. He sets off with a few other oath breakers on the journey to hopefully restore their powers. They find there is more to life than just power.
If you play DND ( or just like fantasy) read this beautiful story about redemption, adventure, and a little betrayal. Oathbreakers by Scott Warren is an absolute masterpiece. A book that makes you sad it is over. I was so engrossed in the story and characters and fell in love. I hope to see more of this rag-tag group or individual stories of their backgrounds.
Oathbreakers Anonymous By: Scott Warren Review by: Susan Ratchford 5 Stars
Hands down one of the best books I have read in a while! Amazing! I absolutely loved this laugh out loud fantasy adventure! I could not put this book down for a second! I felt like I was transported into the coolest game of D and D ever with a twist! This was the first book by Scott Warren I have read but it will definitely not be my last! I really enjoyed his style and imagination. I love his characters, like Marluck, and I cherished his humor and heart. Oathbreakers Anonymous is fun, unexpected, and unique. Any lover of the fantasy genre would be remiss if they didn’t give this wonderful book a read.
This is the first book I have picked up by this author, and I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I was hesitant to start a fantasy/science-fiction as I have really been in a historical fiction phase and didn’t know how it was going to set with me - usually I hyperfocus on a certain genre and have a hard time getting back out of it. It was totally worth it. The way this author writes and uses humor in small details was such a breath of fresh air for me, and I devoured this book. I followed Marluck and his fellow paladins on their quest to redeem themselves and was never disappointed. This book is well-written and the characters are vivid. I had no problems finding relevance in Marluck’s story, and I can’t wait to get my hands on another book by this author!
I received a free copy of Oathbreakers Anonymous from BookSirens.
From the beginning of this book to the end I was continually finding myself impressed with Scott Warren's skills as a writer. His transitions, dialogue, and characterizations are spot-on. I really enjoyed reading Oathbreakers Anonymous. In addition, his central gimmick--an adventuring group composed solely of broken paladins who wanted to return to the fold--was inspired and the plot flowed smoothly with nice action and strong emotional scenes mixed in with humor. Quite impressive and highly recommended. This book totally stands on its own, but in the last few pages, there is a hook for a sequel. I can't wait!
What a cool story! The premise drew me in because I love rooting for the underdog. Loved how the characters were written. The personalities are each so unique and quite individualistic. They each fit into their spot in the story. I just couldn’t put it down. To fall out of favor with the Gods and take up the charge to get your spot back, that takes gumption. These guys had some cajones and I enjoyed watching their journey. The writing was strong and you couldn’t help but feel engaged by the story the minute you started. I couldn’t put it down. I thought my kindle was attached to my hand. Fantastic story and I can’t wait to read the next book.
