I loved this first in the series of four mysteries starring a Cambridge, MA, widowed, children's book illustrator. She is sometimes helped by her son. I thought this series were fabulous and didn't understand why they weren't more popular, and why the author stopped after only 4.
Too many disparate elements that don't really cohere. In a mystery one looks for one main character, one main plot. The action should flow and the character traits have balance. This reads more like research notes for a second draft rather than a final product.
