I really struggled to follow this book. Maybe it’s because I didn’t know enough of the history of the times, and so I didn’t know a lot of the people or events that were only referenced. Or it could be because it tended to jump around through his career a lot. It also seemed that there were large gaps left in the timeline, but that might have been just because of the chaotic timeline. There were a lot of facts I didn’t know before, so I did learn something. But I wouldn’t recommend it as a good biography.
For scholars this is an important work. However, if this is your first exposure to the life and times of John Knox, his culture and geography (as it was for me) this is not the book for you. Start elsewhere, perhaps with Steve Lawson's book on Knox. This book assumes the reader is familiar with language, culture, Knox, the geography, and the key historical events and players of his day.
