Yuyuko Takemiya (竹宮 ゆゆこ Takemiya Yuyuko) is a Japanese writer of light novels. Takemiya debuted in September 2004 with her light novel series Watashitachi no Tamura-kun (Our Tamura-kun) which first appeared in the autumn 2004 issue of Dengeki hp Special, a special edition version of Dengeki hp. That same month, Takemiya worked on the scenario for the bishōjo game Noel by FlyingShine (also known for creating Cross Channel).

Following the completion of Watashitachi no Tamura-kun, Takemiya began her best-known series, Toradora!, which she declared to be complete in April 2010 after ten volumes and three spin-off books. The first book of her next series, Golden Time, was Dengeki Bunko's 2000th published light novel. Takemiya launched the manga series Evergreen with artist Akira Kasukabe on July 19, 2011 in ASCII Media Works' Dengeki Daioh Genesis quarterly magazine.

I really like this series so far. It can be a little bit irritating though to watch the teen angst and how Awaya and Hotaka are being dumb. Awaya is mean to him by her behavior, though she is flummoxed and not wanting to be mean. She just doesn't know how to act.

Meanwhile Hotaka is at first assuming the worst and having stupid nightmares due to paranoia. The nightmares can't be helped really, but his attitude of paranoia, and how he acts due to said paranoia, he can help, I would assume.

Despite the above plot relevant stuff that irritates me, I was engrossed by the story. The art is quite good too. I also enjoy the B plot between the hunky guy and manga club girl. Really angsty and sad so far, but I trust it will go somewhere as I know the main plot goes somewhere, due to spoilers.

Looking forward to the next volume.

So far the story has been giving me more of the "coming-of-age" vibes. I liked how the awkwardness of friendship and feelings are fresh for young teenagers, but I felt like some things are just not being answered. I'm probably going to hear about them soon in the next two volumes, so for now I'll just wait patiently.

This is an enjoyable series. I just wish that there was less of the feeling so down and blue and full of total gloom, every time you feel like your crush doesn't care as much about you as you do them. Just calm down a little and live. You're teens after all.

If I could give this negative stars, I would. This story is beyond silly!

This review if for all four volumes.

I am beginning to like Seven Seas' North American branch more and more, as they tend to publish more mature manga and manga of a variety that you do not see as much with other NA publishers, like Viz. I first picked up Evergreen because it had attractive art, the story sounded unique (and in a sense, it is), and there are only four volumes, which makes it easy to collect, keep, and reread.

In this manga, Manga Club captain Hotaka was born with a congenital heart disease that prevents him from doing a lot of activities that other students normally do. The physical scar on his chest has left him to be somewhat insecure about his physical appearance. Everyday he admires swim-team member Awaya Niki, both beautiful and talented. His view from the club window can only do so much though.

When Hotaka has a private appointment to fulfill his PE requirements with the teacher, he swims in the pool and Niki saves him, noticing his scar in the process. Now that he is up close and personal with her, he decides to develop their friendship. Someone begins a rumor that Niki must only be acting like Hotaka's friend to get close to the class hunk (and womanizer), Soga. Eventually, Hotaka learns the truth, that Niki has been admiring his Manga Club stories for a long time, and she has been collecting every issue. Oddly enough, Hotaka's own personal story is similar to Niki's, so she feels that she can relate to him.

For some reason, Niki begins avoiding Hotaka, not wanting to communicate. Hotaka had high hopes and finds this reaction to be very strange. Perhaps they are both afraid to admit their feelings for each other.

When they do finally admit their feelings to each other and begin dating, Niki has a major revelation from her past about who Hotaka is, and it changes their relationship for the rest of their lives.

Overall this was an enjoyable read, but not something I am overly excited to recommend to random passersby. Fans of manga in general might enjoy this one, but the ending didn't settle well with me and the story was interesting, but also felt a bit wasted. I did give it a higher rating because it did have unique qualities to draw a reader in, and the art was nice. The potential of the story dropped in the last volume though. The twist was extremely interesting, but also a let-down as a reader.

Evergreen is Rated Teen and has some scenes of violence including at least one fight and more Hotaka's dreams as seen in the first volume so if these things bother turn around now and find another book for destiny is around the corner between these students. Being a teenager is not all fun after all as everyone will understand.

After the confrontation at the end of volume one Niki and the girls that cornered her are getting grilled by a teacher about what happened. This is not the adorable Niki we got a chance t o meet in the first book as she obviously does not have the patience to deal with the crybaby nearby. We are then treated to a retelling of the conflict after the end of the last volume even though the girls don't seem to be talking to their teacher so we the readers do not get left out and the truth of a rumor Niki must squash immediately.

Long story short it is a complicated life with confessions abound, hearts start breaking, misunderstandings flow like rain from the sky, and young love begins to blossom in one of the strangest but not overly bad romance stories I have read to date. Also what is with those dreams Hotaka? I know these feelings can be new and frightening just as easily as exciting but pull yourself together man. :)

If I had to choose a favorite part of the book without spoiling any of the many things happening between the characters I would have to say it is when On-chan pokes fun at Soga for being able to feel guilt and finally growing a heart. Soga then decides he and Kotaka are fr...iends as he breaks what tension was going on thanks to the rumor circulating.
