There are some light novels that are pretty popular these days, mainly because they were adapted into an Anime (e.g: Spice and Wolf, Sword Art Online). Silver Cross & Draculea doesn´t have an Anime so far, which explains why it is quite unpopular. In the sheer flood of new light novels, it is hard to stick out and be something new, something impressive.
*Silver Cross & Draculea* is one of the lesser known light novels and *just* has 5 volumes - other series possess around 20. Nethertheless the story is entertaining and the characters fit well together. It has a merry way of telling its story but can be quite sad or badass sometimes. And since the goodreads entries miss a synopsis, here it is:
Hisui Kojou is a highschool freshman and actually doesn´t want anything else than having a normal life and a good start into highschool. However, just before his first highschool day, he is bitten by the Vampire Rushella Draculea. Naturally, humans bitten by vampires become their servants - except for Hisui, who just so happens to be immune against vampires. Ruhsella sees him as a servant nethertheless, moves into his home and attends to his highschool class - to keep an eye on him. However, there are other supernatural beings at school, that clearly see Rushella as a vampire. And Hisui also seems to be something different than a mere human...
(If my english is weird, please note that I´m of german origin. I normally don´t write reviews at goodreads, but I wanted to give this book part of the credits it clearly *does* deserve)
Silver Cross & Draculea is a fun fantasy novel series about a very unique boy who is, unless the specific conditions are met to trigger a defensive reaction (which is hard to do), a very weak guy. Nonetheless, he accomplishes some pretty badass feats with his much stronger female friends.
These are the titular "Draculea", a girl who is a "True Ancestor" - one of the first vampires ever who subsequently turned others - with massive memory loss, a Frankenstein monster girl, and a dhampyr.
Kinda a unique set up, and one where through the power of strategy, Hisui Kojou, the protagonist, can accomplish amazing feats. As he tries to help his friends and solve the mystery of his vampire friend's amnesia, the eclectic group of folks are entertaining to watch.
Well, kick me in the arse and call me Trump, this book was really fascinating.
I picked up this short series as a break from other japanese light-novel series and I didn't expect to be even interesting. I thought; "It's only 283 pages (in Japanes, don't know how much is in fan translated), I'll read this in three hours and probably be done with it."
Don't get me wrong, I'm comparing this light novel to other japanese light-novels and not to some western bestseller.
The story is really fast-paced and without any fan-service chapters, like in CubexCursedxCurious. The characters are your cliche anime types, really one dimensional characters with no depth.
The setting was well researched and other than the characters I don't have any issues with it. If you have a week free and want to leisurely spent your time reading give this book a chance.
