Better than the last two without any doubt, but after slogging through so many rough patches the good portions of this sort of felt like too little too late.

The idea of this series is top notch and some aspects of it are really awesome, but there are so many missteps in terms of characters, progression, and art that it veers towards clumsy.

I enjoyed this series as a whole, such a sad story! The first few volumes are harder to get through with some unneeded fan service and the plot being pushed to the side. The later six volumes are where the plot really kicks in and the series starts to shine. The ending will leave a hole in your heart!

Elfen Lied, Volume 12 the final volume of the series. This volume is one of my favorite volumes on manga that I have ever read the amount of content and the emotional roller coaster that goes on during it makes it amazing. The manga unlike the anime goes into much greater detail about pretty much everything. (Since the anime was only 13 episodes and the manga is 12 full volumes.) I highly recommend this manga to anyone that is into action, dark, drama, horror, and supernatural manga. Since I decided to write a review about my favorite part of Elfen Lied the majority of this review with be packed with spoilers.

***SPOILERS***

***END SPOILERS***

The spoiler portion is less of a review and more of a summary of the last few chapters of the manga. I had a very tough time putting my feelings about it into words so i just decided to summarize the entirety of it. Most of the things I cover in the summary are the reasons why I really enjoyed this manga. If you did read that I still highly recommend reading the entire manga. This entire story is one of the reasons why I continued reading manga and enjoying anime (along with a few others.). Elfen Lied is one of those manga/anime that you have to watch, despite being overshadowed by others of the same genre. Even though to me none of its competition really pulls off what Elfen Lied was able to do. It was able to give you a story you could follow the entire time (Even though sometimes it can be a bit over the top). This manga will always be one of my favorites especially because of the end.

EL is a very odd series and is beyond inconsistent in quality. The story is pretty damn good, but some of the characters are confusing as hell. Nozomi does actually nothing to the story, and Bando should have stayed dead. The excessive nudity felt unnecessary, and I cannot think of a single instance in which it did anything important. The handling of traumatic experiences was extremely clumsy and could offend somebody very easily. Despite the blatantly perverted depictions of the girls, there was a lot to enjoy with the series as a whole. However, the happy ending seems reductive of the story’s messaging and feels unnecessary. If EL was polished, it could be very good. As it stands, though, it’s just there for entertainment. Trying to extract any critical thought from it is immediately reduced by the constant (and unnecessary) sexual content in the series.

It finally ended. This manga was good in some aspects but also terrible in others. Let's review the pros and cons, will we?
Good sides of manga:
1. The idea itself. I picked up this one for its interesting idea: new human race, more developed and evolved than homo-sapiens, Diclonius race. Having the ability of telekinesis, with having extra unseen arms and having horns. It was so promising.
2. I liked Lucy. Black and white personalities, she was great representative of diclonii race. She was the queen, Eve of new species. She was tormented and lonely. She was the heroine of this story.
3. The ending was satisfying. In the end we got some character development for Kouta too. Even though . The ending has some bittersweet tone.
Bad sides of manga:
1. Firstly, fanservice. Lot and lots of fanservice and nudity! Irrelevant and out of nowhere! In every freaking chapter!
2. Bland characters. Kouta was supposedly a second important character but he was so one dimensional that I even didn't feel him his presence ntill the last chapters. The forced romance between Kouta and Yuka was not believable. Actually Kouta never loved her, he liked Lucy/Kaede/Nyuu.
Other side characters were not enjoyable to read about. I didn't care about any of them. Except Mayu and a bit Nana, just because they (a) have some emotion (b) have ideals and goals (c) are nice to people around them (d) helpful.
3. Artwork was terribly plain and boring.
I didn't cry at the end. I felt free. Free of this manga.

Victor Yu really made a wondeful job presenting this book to the whole class. Just his description of the story made me want to hear more. I finished this book during winter break I believe. It's very graphic and full of violence and head chopping off and exploding. I personally loved it, there was just far more than violence behind the whole story of people with horns sticking out of their skull. The ending was really really sad, also shocking, but definitely awesome! It was a heart striking story, it's hard to explain but it kind off relates to me alot in a different perspective. I'm not a big fan of violence but like what I said it was far more than just killing, it was a mixed of genre! All in one book! Awesome graphic novel!!

Great series overall! I enjoyed the end, although some parts of the conclusion chapter had too much of a "happy ending" vibe, especially given the dark, melancholy, bittersweet mood of the rest of the volume and story. That said, it was a great read and I definitely recommend it.

This review is for the entire series.

Synopsis: Lucy is a special breed of human referred to as Diclonius, born with a short pair of horns and invisible telekinetic hands that lands her as a victim of inhumane scientific experimentation by the government. However, once circumstances present her an opportunity to escape, Lucy, corrupted by the confinement and torture, unleashes a torrent of bloodshed as she escapes her captors. During her breakout, she receives a crippling head injury that leaves her with a split personality: someone with the mentality of a harmless child possessing limited speech capacity. In this state of instability, she stumbles upon two college students, Kouta and his cousin Yuka, who unknowingly take an injured fugitive into their care, unaware of her murderous tendencies. This act of kindness will change their lives, as they soon find themselves dragged into the shadowy world of government secrecy and conspiracy.

Review: A horrifically violent, gruesomely sexualized, shocking and depressing series that's further intensified by the horrific acts done to a group of young girls. The things we are forced to watch happen to them is sickening, which makes their bloody vengeance and murderous rampages almost justified, if it wasn't for the ridiculously high body count of innocent civilians and bystanders.

Everyone in this series is an extreme sadist, the type of people that would beat a puppy to death with a glass vase just to spite another person. I admit, the shock value can get tiresome and pointless in certain instances, but from the standpoint of a horror flick, it can be entertaining to see just how much you are able to endure. Reminiscent of old-school slasher movies with excessive splatter and gore. Shock value for the sake of shock value. It can get redundant, but it can also be entertaining if you're looking for simpler entertainment.

There are plenty of flaws in the series as well as very awkward and misplaced moments that drag down the overall serious tone, but it's something I feel happy having experienced. It's a great example of exploring the minds of very tragic and emotionally broken characters. These instances of incredibly sad, memorable and heart-wrenching moments are the saving grace of the series.

Read all the volumes in one sitting so I’ll just leave a review for the final volume.

It’s interesting to see how this series would directly be one of the inspirations for Stranger Things. The Diclonii are essentially what the gifted children with telepathic powers are in the show even being labeled numbers to identify them. Themes of nature vs nurture and the whole allegory of othering and gifted children as a whole. Most of these things are great topics for anything sci-fi and given the time frame Elfen Lied was released you could even consider it a hallmark for the manga medium to be delving into such a serious topic.

There’s a lot of things you can praise it for in hindsight, but what are we are presented with is extremely sloppy in terms of execution. I would say the first 3-4 volumes are rather interesting especially with how this series opens. While the art style itself is screaming 4chan levels of quality (it improves drastically overtime) the added shock value of all the violence and chaos that occurs kept me reading. Anything past those volumes shows shades of good storytelling, but the writing specifically the characters outside of Lucy are all just so poorly written. I do not mind portrayals of awful people, but aside from Lucy/Nyu or any of the Diclonii, I find it really hard to sympathize with any of the “human” characters in this series ever aside from Mayuu. The biggest offenders being Bando and Kurama who are easily some of the most vile people in the entire series. They are given some awful redemptions and happy endings which is so actually absurd given what they do throughout the story.

By the last 3 volumes the pacing of it gets bogged down by a lot of exposition dumps. Dumps I feel could have been done a couple volumes back and before the final battles of the series. The revelation by Lucy about how Diclonii are just humans with a horn mutation was easily the most important and gratifying twist of the entire story showing how all of this could have just been prevented had it not been for human ignorance and our inclination towards prejudice. For all that’s worth everything just kind of ends happily ever after once Lucy dies and I end up feeling rather meh about it.

I would not say it’s good by any means, if anything it’s aged rather poorly given its reception. Though I would say it’s worth a read if want to see the things it would later inspire in its medium and outside.

This rating and review is for the series as a whole.

I really enjoyed the plot of the story and found that to be the series' strongest part. The lore behind the diclonii was super fascinating and tragic. And while some may not enjoy the happy ending, I actually found it satisfying considering how bleak the rest of the manga was.

As for the parts I didn't enjoy, the amount of fan service this series had especially in the beginning really took me out of the story. I also felt like certain characters just weren't necessary to the overall story and nothing would have changed much if they were removed. Yuka felt more like a plot device than anything and Nozumi just felt unnecessary; her storyline really didn't contribute to the main story at all. I also didn't really enjoy the art especially in the beginning but I do have to commend the mangaka because I could see that the art definitely improved by the end of the series.

Now that I finally read this series, I can see why Elfen Lied has continued to live in the hearts of anime/manga fans because it is a powerful story about humanity. It's just some of the other facets of the series that I really didn't enjoy that kept this from being a fantastic read for me.

Just watch the anime if you want to experience Elfen Lied for some reason.
I feel like Lucy has out lived Elfen Lied. Elfen Lied I feel like is mainly just remembered for Lucy. Which isn't bad Lucy is definitely the best character, she's especially great in the anime! Except as Nyu, Nyu has some somewhat good or ok moments but just eeeeeh.

I probably wouldn't have read this whole manga, I personally think I'm good at dropping series that I'm not enjoying. So, the day that I ended up binging a bunch of these volumes I had a long period of time where I was stuck somewhere or like a long waiting period I guess. And that day I had decided to read the 3rd volume of this series before departing. And I didn't want to start a new series or continue a different one so I just read the entire Elfen Lied manga, which I kind of regret I guess.
Really just watch the anime, I actually do like the anime. The anime is good. The manga is decent and maybe if you end up loving the anime maybe read the first two volumes of the manga they're at least somewhat decent.

I enjoyed the series for what it was. Of course I saw the anime first so noticed right away all the differences between them. The manga was better in many ways. The character of Nozumi (the singer) was pretty worthless to the story.

The downsides of this were all the fan service for no reason and the art was very . . . basic. I also became annoyed with many of the characters as 90% of their issues could be solved by just TALKING to one another. They also related to one another all in really strange manners. But then again, I suppose they all had survived significant trauma and were just trying to make it through.

Worth reading. Not my favorite manga but still pretty ok.

For the whole series I would say I'd give it 3-3,5 stars. It had some weak moments and the story didn't feel entirely planned out. I also feel some characters looked alike too much. Some moments were too sudden and others too planned out. Character death was handled wish washily as Bandou survived everything. Also the manga pretended to be science-y but failed to explain a lot. Overall I thought the premise was interesting, but the execution failed in too many ways. I didn't really care enough about the characters and because we didn't get a lot of time to know them most of them felt lacking in personality.

Why?

Well I've read them all and I have only one thing to say. This series has a lot of deep meaning, philosophol meanings expressed in an extream situation, this concept made the manga so much fun to read and think about. But damn the author needs to tone it down with all the hentai! After 12 volumes I was like "Enough! I get it they have boobs!" XD The ending was shit btw.

I was upset that characters that died “magically” survived, like bandou-san whose death was tragically beautiful. I enjoyed Lucy and Nyu’s ending however I didn’t understand the twins that Kouta comes in to contact with in the end. I do feel the conclusion could have been polished in a better way, nonetheless I was deeply invested with this manga and enjoyed every bits of it.

Despite the fan service and everything, I enjoyed it very much. It starts slow and the visuals aren’t the greatest, but it gets better as the story progresses. It has its own charm, and even though some things were quite an asspull, especially in the last few volumes, I enjoyed the ending very much. It will have a special place in my heart.

The series as a whole is pretty awesome and with this being quite a satisfying conclusion it would be a disservice not to give it a 5 star. This manga is still mentioned widely years after it was completed and I can see why. If you haven't yet you really should.

Elfen Lied: End
