This volume was somehow interesting with information about dinclonii's past, despite having a stupid side story. I was thinking to give it 4 stars , then all these nudity happened. Really, why all these dinclonii have to be naked? The reason? Oh, whatever... I hope Lucy kills them all. PS: poor Papa...He is gone bonkers.
I think this series is the poster child for 'fantastic idea, horrible execution'. I've been sitting here thinking of all the ways this has gone wrong, and all of the ways this series could have been truly epic...and all of it falls right back onto the author and his style. There is just so much that could have worked in this (obviously because the show is better and it worked with the same storyline and characters), but it gets so caught up in poor character development and quirks that it just loses itself. All the panels used for idiotic panty shots in the middle of conversations that barely matter could have been used to further the actual depth of characters.
No one has really grown except the Diclo characters, the humans are stuck in their same routines but insist on taking up page time. It brings up all of the real world issues but uses them as cheap plot devices to make situations horrible and awwkard. It's just wasted potential.
A ver cómo acaba.
Synopsis: Lucy is a special breed of human referred to as Diclonius, born with a short pair of horns and invisible telekinetic hands that lands her as a victim of inhumane scientific experimentation by the government. However, once circumstances present her an opportunity to escape, Lucy, corrupted by the confinement and torture, unleashes a torrent of bloodshed as she escapes her captors. During her breakout, she receives a crippling head injury that leaves her with a split personality: someone with the mentality of a harmless child possessing limited speech capacity. In this state of instability, she stumbles upon two college students, Kouta and his cousin Yuka, who unknowingly take an injured fugitive into their care, unaware of her murderous tendencies. This act of kindness will change their lives, as they soon find themselves dragged into the shadowy world of government secrecy and conspiracy.
Review: A horrifically violent, gruesomely sexualized, shocking and depressing series that's further intensified by the horrific acts done to a group of young girls. The things we are forced to watch happen to them is sickening, which makes their bloody vengeance and murderous rampages almost justified, if it wasn't for the ridiculously high body count of innocent civilians and bystanders.
Everyone in this series is an extreme sadist, the type of people that would beat a puppy to death with a glass vase just to spite another person. I admit, the shock value can get tiresome and pointless in certain instances, but from the standpoint of a horror flick, it can be entertaining to see just how much you are able to endure. Reminiscent of old-school slasher movies with excessive splatter and gore. Shock value for the sake of shock value. It can get redundant, but it can also be entertaining if you're looking for simpler entertainment.
There are plenty of flaws in the series as well as very awkward and misplaced moments that drag down the overall serious tone, but it's something I feel happy having experienced. It's a great example of exploring the minds of very tragic and emotionally broken characters. These instances of incredibly sad, memorable and heart-wrenching moments are the saving grace of the series.
1.5 If I remember correctly this is the volume where a moment happens that I personally believe is the best part of Elfen Lied as a whole (both anime and especially the manga) this being the flashback between Lucy and the friend she made more in her teen years. I think one of the main reasons this flashback is so good is that Lucy and her friend are both girls and this flashback mainly revolves around them. Meaning that especially Lucy's motivations aren't in service of a man. Which sadly happens a lot in especially the manga of Elfen Lied. The cast of Elfen Lied is mainly made up of women especially since all the dinclonius are girls. And there's pretty much only 4 or 5 maybe 6 at most like actually somewhat important male characters. And basically all the female characters revolve around a man, instead of having motivations and goals outside of something that has to do with a man. As well as all the women being objectified in this manga, that's my least favorite part of the manga. I am sick and tired of the story being an intense usually bloody and violent moment in the story and then oops a female character falls down and boom panty shot. I don't hate fan service some series do it well, but the majority of the time it's done terribly. Especially in Elfen Lied. So Lucy's flashback with her friend is good, while the rest of this volume was bad :/
I guess the reason I rated this volume lower was because I wanted more action. Even though, much was revealed it lacked something.
Memorable Quote: “Humans always separate themselves from others. They won’t feel secure if they have no one to despise. So they use the colour of skin to separate and enslave others.”
Oh Lucy, how amazing you were when I was a teenager. Elfen Lied was one of those animes when I was younger that everyone had watched. A time were and of the world genre like Evangelion, X/1999, Ergo Proxy, Appleseed, Blue Submarine, Gunnm, Trigun and so much more reigned supreme in avid manga and anime fans. I loved EL, this may have been my 5th or 6th times reading it. The grotesque psychological trauma the Lucy clones go through as science experiments for the destruction of mankind in order to place the Diicloni as populous of the world.
EL has many themes from social alienation, abuse, jealousy and revenge to identity crisis and the value of humanity or ones self worth. There are many stages and evolution to the story and characters. Although the story is complex, the anime and manga differs at some points, especially on the ending. I strongly recommend the manga over the anime for that reason alone.
Do I recommend it: Yes, a must for anyone looking for a classic for animes in general, in its era, and its genre.
This was such a dramatic and heartfelt series. I felt so bad for the characters. the author did a really great job pulling at the readers. the series was emotionally charged and action packed.
