Fast-paced, engaging and well written, Murder at the Old House is the 10th book in the Melissa Craig series.

Melissa receives news that her father, whom she hasn’t seen in ages, has been brutally murdered and her mother, who couldn’t hurt a fly, is the prime suspect.
Being sure of her mother’s innocence, she decides to conduct her own investigation and try to uncover the truth. But the deeper she digs, the more she learns about her seemingly upright and righteous father.

Then another murder is committed.

Who wanted her father dead and why? Was the motive for murder work-related or personal? Are the two murders related? And why is Melissa’s mother acting strange?

Thanks to the author, Bookouture and the NetGalley for providing me with a copy.

Murder at the Old House, the tenth novel in the Melissa Craig Cozy Mystery series, uses the beautiful Cotswolds setting as one of the central aspects of the story and reminds me a lot of the chocolate-box villages portrayed in Midsomer Murders. It's a story that is full of charm and works well as a standalone - it certainly isn't necessary to have read the previous instalments. The author is adept at moulding interesting characters that you really care about, an intriguing plot and the twists and turns throughout make for a satisfying tale. We also get more development of main protagonist Melissa which is exciting to see and book tenth is just as exciting as the rest of the series.

It's an engaging mystery with a menacing undertone and chilling atmosphere running through it, and this time the case is personal as Melissa's mother Sylvia is accused of double murder. Importantly for a cozy there is no profanity, sexual liaisons or blood and gore, and the conclusion was unexpected and satisfying. Previously published as The Fourth Suspect, fans of Agatha Christie and MC Beaton should enjoy this as well as those who love to read cozies. A superb and highly entertaining addition to an already popular series, and a perfect read for those dark, chilly nights ebb away into spring.

Many thanks to Bookouture for an ARC.

A few months ago, I decided to stop reading blurbs. The cover is more than enough for me to know whether a book is for me, yes or no. I have to say that I enjoy reading even more because I have the 100% surprise element now. I felt that I was often lead by my brain in a certain direction as well, but not anymore. I go with the flow.

That’s why this was such fun after devouring the prologue, because I had no idea what was coming. I thought it was just brilliant. The author has captured my attention my attention once again and I often have said that this one or that one was my favourite. I have to change my mind once more. THIS is by far my favourite. It’s such a wonderful series. Of course you don’t have to take my word for it. You can find out for yourself and you will have to admit that I am right.

I can hardly wait for the next part. The more I read this author’s books, the more I want more of them. I loved it! 5 stars, no doubt about that.

Thank you, Betty Rowlands, Bookouture and Netgalley.

Thanks to NetGalley for an advance copy of this cozy mystery.

I enjoyed this book very much. Melissa Craig is a very successful author of a detective series. She learns that her estranged father has been murdered, and that her mother is a suspect in the death, and leaves her country cottage to travel two hours to her parents' home. Her mother is very tearful and fragile, and Mel has to deal with her mother's protective neighbour and the police who want to pin the killing on Mrs. Ross. Her mother's health is not good, but she begs Mel to investigate the murder herself and Mel agrees to take it on.

The writing is short but sweet, the book was very good, and the story was easy to follow, with a touch of romance as well. I will definitely read more in this series, and have already purchased the first one. Well done!

Melissa “Mel” Craig has finally closed the book on her fictional detective. She feels good about finishing her final book about him and plans to also leave the real-life detecting to the police as well. Her boyfriend, Ken Harris has joined a private detective firm in the US and has moved to America.

She receives an unexpected visit from a friend of hers and Ken's. Detective Waters drops a bombshell of Mel. Her father has been murdered and her mother is a suspect in his killing. Mel hasn't spoken to heard from her parents for the past thirty years. They threw her out of the house when they discovered she was pregnant “with out benefit of clergy,” as Mel put it.

When she arrives at her mother Sylvia's house, she is shocked and surprised to learn that her mother was afraid of her father and not all was well in the marriage. Sylvia says she wanted to contact Mel in those missing years, but Mel's father wouldn't let her. She begs Mel to find the real killer of her father Frank. Sylvia is arrested for the murder. Evidence is found in her home. Sylvia tries to explain it and Mel has a very strange encounter with her mother.

Mel and her agent, Joe visit Sylvia's friends before Frank forebode her to meet them any longer. They get some very interesting reactions to their visits and learn some surprising news as well.

A journalist named Denis Botting beards Melissa outside her mother's door and intimates that he knows a great deal about the local area and its people and could help with her inquiries. Mel reluctantly and suspiciously agrees to work with him.

Melissa begins to put the pieces together; investigating in spite of the fact that DI Adair does not want her to. Sylvia continues to act very strange. Her moods are all over the place. She says something and then denies she ever said it. She urges her mother to see a doctor.

In a sudden epiphany, Mel knows who committed the murders. DI Adair isn't interested.
I was surprised at the identity of the killer, but the motive was as old as the hills.

This is perhaps my favorite Melissa Craig book so far. While it was a departure from her “village” murders, it held my interest and I truly enjoyed it. The writing is very good and the characters likable. I have a little trouble with Mel's naivete – her being a writer of detective fiction, one would think...well. DI Adair was deplorably incompetent. She wanted an easy answer and wouldn't listen at all to her partner. I love that Melissa has finally found a solid love interest!

I want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for forwarding to me a copy of this absolutely great book for me to read, enjoy and review.

The latest Melissa Craig mystery focuses on her personal life, but there is still a murder to solve, with numerous suspects, an unhelpful police detective and danger for the intrepid, crime writer and unwilling detective.

Melissa has finally finished her long-running detective series and decides it's time for some relaxation, vowing to stop investigating murders in real life too. It's time for a change in her personal life too with the departure of Ken Harris her longtime love interest but unsurprisingly, fate catapults her back to a former life with the unexpected death of her estranged father.

When she travels to her childhood home, she finds her mother a shell of the woman she remembers and the prime suspect for her father's murder. Despite the way, they treated her when she was at her most vulnerable, she has to help, find the real killer.

Melissa faces her most dangerous and difficult investigation, without Ken's calming presence. However, she is not alone, as someone who she has kept out of her personal life, offers her much needed support.

The characters are as expected, complex and authentic, the police detective is not only dismissive of Melissa's investigative talent but in danger of missing the obvious because of his lack of experience and skill in detecting crime.

The plot twists are well thought out, the pacing fast, and the characters and setting perfect for this type of cozy mystery. The ending is cleverly crafted and ties up all the clues perfectly.

'Murder at the Old House' can be read as a standalone mystery, but this series is addictive, and every murder mystery lover deserves to read the whole series.

I received a copy of this book from Bookouture via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

"Crime writer Melissa Craig has acquired a reputation for solving real mysteries in her local Cotswold area. But when her estranged father is found murdered in his own workshop, events come chillingly close to home. To Melissa's horror, fingerprints found on the murder weapon prove to be those of the mother with whom she has had no contact for almost thirty years.

"Determined to prove her mother's innocence, Melissa starts her own investigation with the help of her literary agent, Joe Martin. And as she probes into the background of her father's personal and business life, she discovers that he wasn't quite the puritanical pillar of society he purported to be.

"And then a second victim is found brutally murdered ..."
~~back cover

This was a real nail biter. As a bit of a spoiler ... Melissa's mother seemed certain to be the murderer and Melissa had to start from scratch to attempt to disprove that theory. (Of course her mother wasn't the killer ... that would have been too obvious and as we all know, the obvious murderer is never the actual murderer.) But the author has cleverly plotted to make Sylvia look guilty, prompting the reader to question whether or not this time the obvious was the truth.

And there's a wee bit of romance sprinkled through the investigation ...

Author Melissa Craig is moving on with her life. Iris is in France, Ken Harris in America and she is finding her more independent life challenging but enjoyable until a police officer arrives at her door again.

Over the previous ten books Mel's estranged parents have had a few mentions but nothing more. Now her father has been found dead with her mother the prime suspect and, regardless of the 30 years of silence, Melissa knows she has to help if she can. Another person who has been a bit player up until now is Joe Martin, an authors agent, who is devoted to Melissa and rushes to her aid when she asks for his assistance.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, once again Betty Rowland's characterisation was excellent,  especially as I have always liked Joe and was delighted to discover his bigger role this time. Melissa's mother was a strange duck but definitely helped the storyline along by being so.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to Netgalley and the publishers in exchange for an unbiased review and would recommend it to anyone working through this series or who enjoys a well worked, easy to read murder mystery by an excellent author.

I thought I knew what to expect from the authors books, but this one had a slightly different feel to it. This book features Melissa’s family, in particular her mother, from whom she has been estranged for many years. She is quickly pulled back into family affairs which have her trying to figure out the life of a father she barely knows anymore.

I mentioned in my review of the previous book that the question of Mel’s love life hadn’t yet been answer. I feel as if that has now gone some way to being resolved thankfully. I love the ending of this book and I honestly can’t wait for the next one. This is a series which keeps getting better and better.

Huge thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for providing a copy.

GNab . Our heroine is Melissa 'Mel' Craig, a successful British author of mystery novels. This is actually the tenth in the Melissa Craig novels written by successful British author of mystery novels Betty Rowlands, but Murder at the Old House is completely stand alone.

After thirty years of estrangement Melissa is notified by the police in her village in Cotswold of the gruesome murder of her father Frank Ross, and the possible arrest for that murder of her mother Sylvia in Thames Valley. It is obvious early on that the father was abusive in a psychological way with both Melissa and Sylvia, and that Sylvia is confused and in poor health. Melissa is tasked by her mother to find the murderer of her father, much to the ire of DI Adair, the young police detective inspector in charge of the murder case.

Rowlands writes a tight, fast tale, with a clean, easily followed story line and realistic characters. Her descriptive passages take you to spring in England. She is an author to follow. I am pleased to recommend her to friends and family.

I received a free electronic copy of this novel from Netgalley, author Betty Rowlands, and publisher Bookouture in exchange for an honest review. Thank you all for sharing your hard work with me.

Melissa Craig is the author of a well known detective series and does a little detecting herself.  In Murder at the Old House, Melissa receives the news that her father has been killed and that her mother is suspected of having murdered him.  Even though they have been estranged for 30 years, Melissa rushes to her mother's side.

While her mother insists that she had nothing to do with the crime, her story does not add up.  She doesn't seem to be very distressed by her husband's death and her story keeps changing.  Could her mother be the killer?  Melissa is determined to find out the truth.

This cozy mystery is perfect for those who are looking for an Agatha Raisin read-alike.  Both series take place in the Cotswolds, have a female protagonist and have a little romance mixed with a little murder.

NOTE:  This is book #13 in the series and, while the murder storyline is self contained, the side story revolving around Melissa's personal life is ongoing, so a reader would benefit from reading the series in order for that reason.  I received an ARC of this book and, unfortunately, was unable to find any of the  previous books of this series available through my library resources.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

What an absolute treat it was to spend time with Melissa Craig again. In previous books we have learned that she was thrown out of her home when her parents found out that she was pregnant. While we assumed that her mother might not have been in agreement with her father, she was powerless to help Melissa. Thankfully she was taken care of by her dead boyfriends parents and she was able to bring up her son Simon.

This time we get to meet Sylvia Ross, Melissa's mother but the circumstances are not happy. Sylvia is accused of murdering Frank Ross, Melissa's father. None of her mother's neighbours or friends are aware that they had a daughter, much less that she is best-selling author Mel Craig. Her father did not approve of the sort of books that Melissa wrote but her mother read them in secret at a good friend and neighbour's house.

Melissa promises her mother that she will find out who really did kill her father. With many red herrings thrown in the mix, police who don't appreciate Melissa helping them, and her mother's erratic behaviour at times. Did Frank have a disgruntled employee that was not happy with the way things are happening at work?

This book made me want to sing with joy as Melissa finally realized that her agent Joe Martin was a good man and the man that will take care of her and make her happy. They will work things out together. A surprise visit from good friend Iris, is just the icing on the cake. Once again I was hooked from page one and could not stop turning pages until I knew what the ending will be.

**This is actually book ten in the series, not book thirteen. It was previously published as The Fourth Suspect and should be combined with that edition**

I love this series. Each one just gets better and better. This time, the story takes place away from Melissa's village. Her father has been murdered and her mother is the prime suspect. Mel hasn't seen her parents for over twenty years (possibly nearly thirty?) as they threw her out when she got pregnant with her son Simon and wasn't married.
Although the story is a murder mystery (one which I didn't actually solve this time, I was barking up the wrong tree completely) much of the actual story is about Mel and her relationship with her parents. We have been told that they are estranged previously and why, but it has only really been mentioned in passing. Now we not only get to meet her mother, but we find out more about both Mel's past and her parent's relationship.
We also see much more of Mel's agent, Joe in this book. He has been a background character in previous stories, particularly because Mel has wanted to keep him at arm's length. In this book, he not only features quite prominently but Mel herself come to rely upon him more.
There are another two books still to go in this series and I have one earlier one to go back and read. I'm loving them and I'll be disappointed when they finally come to an end. The Mel Craig series is highly enjoyable.

Another superb old fashioned detective story. Though it may seem to plod along without the suspense of the more modern mystery murder thriller, the stories still feel good and the descriptiveness of both the surroundings, the incidents and the characters are all spot on.

This particular story is definitely different as it hits closer home. Melissa has just finished her last book and looks forward to a rest. She receives the news that her father from whom she has been estranged for years is dead and she now needs to get back to her mother with whom she has never had any contact since she left home and try to find out what has happened.

Frank her father she discovers has not been quite good! giving an appearance of being a church warden and a man of strict moral ethics and principles he seems to be just the opposite and her mother is quite a helpless sort of woman who has never had the courage to take a stand. When her mother is arrested for her husbands murder and (released quickly) Melissa knows she has to take the investigation under her wing to try to find out what actually happened. It does not help that she is also not very sure whether her mother is the murderer or not!

Coping with an investigation on the one hand, Melissa has also got to balance an emotional reunion with her mother who does not seem to be quite aware of the gravity of her situation.

Good reading in an old fashioned sense.

Melissa Craig is a mystery writer who has finished her latest novel and now has time to enjoy the arrival of spring in the Cotswolds. When she is notified that her estranged father has been killed, she travels to a nearby town to be with her mother, from whom she has been estranged for thirty years. Melissa has tried to forget she had parents after they kicked her out of their home when she found out she was pregnant. After reuniting with her mother and hearing her story, it occurs to Melissa that her mother will undoubtedly be the prime suspect in her father’s murder. With her mother begging her to find a way to exonerate her, there is another murder.

This is the tenth book in the Melissa Craig series, but can be read as a standalone. Melissa is a well-drawn character as are the other characters. The book is well-written and moves along at a fast pace. Most readers will be hard pressed to put the book down because they know there’s another twist on the next page or two. For readers who prefer their mysteries cozy, this is the book for them. If cozies aren’t your cup of tea, pick this book up, you’re sure to fall in love with Melissa as she tries to solve her father’s murder, and you might even be tempted to find book one in the series.

Previously published as “The Fourth Suspect”, Murder at the Old House (A Melissa Craig Mystery Book 10) is a well-plotted cozy thriller hybrid. Estranged from her parents, due to the typical ideological differences seen between different generations, Melissa delves head first into a too-close-to-home death investigation. Donning her ‘virtual’ trench coat, even though she had decided to put her amateur sleuthing aside, she begins to question what she thought she knew and what is indeed the truth regarding her parents’ marriage.

As with all of the books in the series, thus far, Rowlands presents a winding plot, featuring realistic characters. To my delight, Rowlands has continued to depart from settings and predictable storylines, as seen with books 8 and 9. She has begun transporting the reader into a more intimate cases, which resonated with me.

Recommended for readers who enjoy reading a series of cozies that, while linked by a main character, change in intensity as the series progresses.

Like it states on the bottom of the front cover “a gripping and hard to put down cozy mystery novel”.
Melissa Craig had just finished writing her latest mystery novel, when she receives shocking news: her estranged father has been found dead in the family home and her mother, Sylvia, is under suspicion of murder.
Melissa hasn’t seen her parents for nearly 30 years, but upon hearing the dreadful news she rushes to her mother’s side. Her mother begs Melissa to investigate the case, as she has no one else to turn to.
As Melissa investigates she discovers a disgruntled employee, a controlling family lawyer or perhaps it could be the woman with whom her father was having an affair?
After another body is found, Melissa realizes she’s dealing with a ruthless killer. As the police close in, Melissa must act fast, as they are trying to pin both deaths on her mother.
I recommend this book to mystery lovers who enjoy a twisty and interesting murder mystery!

Returning to the Cotswold's for the 10th book in the Melissa Craig series is delightful and I always enjoy her wonderful writing and setting of this series.. Melissa is a likable savvy protagonist who always solves her cases with a variety of suspects and clues. Melissa is contacted by her estranged mother when her mother is suspected of killing her father. After 30 years without contact, Melissa returns to her home town and tries to help even with their difficulties. This was a different departure from the previous in series with the family drama foremost of the story but as always entertaining and enjoyable to read. The sleuth was a great whodoneit with a surprising conclusion. I always enjoy this series for its fine writing and spectacular setting
I recommend this book. Thank you for the ARC. My opinion is my own.

This is the 10th book in the Melissa Craig series. Melissa has not seen her parents for 30 years after a major falling out with her father and asked to leave home. She is called home to the murder of her father and her mother is number one suspect. When another murder occurs the police are determined to make her mother confess. Her mother’s collapse and asking Melissa to find the killer sets her off on an investigation of her own. This is a good stand alone mystery. You do not need to have read previous books to enjoy this story.

This is a great cozy mystery novel, it's like Murder She Wrote in the Cotswold with a younger and british Jessica Fletcher. It's just the feel of the book and Melissa Craig seems different than that. I normally don't read in the middle or end of a series, but came across this book at a secondhand bookstore. The story centers on Melissa finishing up her latest novel when her police friend contacts her and reveals that her estranged father has died. Her mother Sylvia is the prime suspect. I was very impressed and went back to purchase the first of the series, as well as the first in Betty Rowlands other series.

Backstory is supplied on the main character, Melissa, when her father is murdered. Mel and Joe join her mother, Sylvia, since the police suspect Sylvia of killing her husband. We visit a new town, where the police don't know or like Mel interfering with the investigation.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for my eARC in exchange for my honest review. This is a great series as Mel continues having a life. It is nice to read a series where the character does more than just solve mysteries.

I suppose that I'm starting to be monotonous but I have to write again the same thing: this series improves with each new installment.
This one was brilliant, engaging and entertaining.
I don't know if these books can be classified as cosy mysteries or whodunnit but i don't care as I enjoyed all them.
I loved the mystery as much as I loved the developments in Mel life.
Highly recommended!

This book finds Mel back in her hometown. Her estranged father has been murdered and her mother is the prime suspect. Mel has come home to help investigate the crime. Fortunately Joe, Mel’s literary agent assists her in her investigations. Interestingly this book, the 10th in the series, has a real freshness about it. A very good addition to the series.

This is a little bit of a departure from her usual, and it probes more into Melissa's private life with the murder of one her family members. It also has a further instalment on her love life, one most will enjoy.
Since the series started, I have found all these books well written, exciting to read and ones that cannot be put down easily - this one is no exception, in fact I am finding the stories getting better and better.
A must read for cozy mystery fans, this one has a bite.

Terrific!

Mel Craig is out of her comfort zone in this mystery. She has been estranged from her parents for 30 years. She receives a call from her mother that her father has been murdered! Her mother wants her to come and help solve it. So she is back in her home town without her usual supporting friends and among her parents friends who think she left them all those years ago or do not know she even exists! Very different but good!

Murder at the Old House

Melissa meets up with her estranged mother after her father is murdered. Unsure of her mother's innocence Melissa soon discovers her father was not the man he pretended to be.
This really is the best Melissa Craig novel yet. Betty Rowlands has written a book I couldn't put down.
It was full of twists and turns and was thoroughly enjoyable.
Highly recommended.

Addicting: but I've caught up with the author again

The more I like a series, the faster I catch up with the author, or they die. But, I'm getting up there in years too, so I can't say much about the dying part. I've really gotten into Betty Rowlands' cottage series, one of the best cozy series I've read. I heartily recommend it.

I never get tired of this series; this installment does not disappoint, either with the plot, or the development of the main characters, and there is always a twist! It was also good to get some of the back-story of Melissa's family. The sub-title says it all: A completely addictive cozy mystery novel!
