Rei Tōma (Japanese: 藤間 麗,Tōma Rei) has been drawing since childhood, but she only began drawing manga because of her graduation project in design school. When she drew a short-story manga, "Help me dentist" (ヘルプ me デンティスト), it attracted a publisher's attention and she made her debut right away. Her magnificent art style became popular, and after she debuted as a manga artist, she became known as an illustrator for novels and video game character designs.
Dawn of the Arcana is her first long-running manga series, and it has been a hit in Japan, selling over a million copies.
This was a wild damn ride! I never expected the reveals. I still think the pacing is a little off but that last panel is literally to die for. The reveal about Loki….I’m speechless. I can’t believe we’re getting so close to the end. I’m so excited to see where the story is going to go in these last 2 volumes.
Dawn of the Arcana, Volume 11, continues to impress with its excellent use of characters and story growth. Unlike so many manga where no one changes no matter how long the title has progressed, in Dawn of the Arcana 11, we see Nakaba continue to mature and grow as a person and leave behind the innocence of the youth she spent in the castle. This volume especially takes Nakaba full circle, with a final page ending being quite a coup for the young princess. But it didn't come easily.
Quite far from being a simple shoujo romance, Author/artist Toma infused a quite sense of depth but also dread from the beginning of the story. Characters have to make hard choices and people will die based upon the consequences. In this volume, we really get to see the lengths so many of the characters will go, how much they will sacrifice, in order to achieve bigger, long term goals: protecting loved ones, remaking the two countries, and changing the social structure.
It's surprising how good this is despite Nakaba and Caesar being separated from each other for so long. Through her power, Nakaba is still able to see Caesar and the two will come into contact again after so long apart. But the doubts created by the separation are still there. As well, both have to deal with the choices they made while separated.
This was one of the most powerful of volumes in the series, which is due to end around chapter 53. I highly recommend this for those who want a good romance but also want to avoid the hoarier cliches that are so rampant in the shoujo manga genre. The series has a gentle beauty that unfolds slowly but with surety. And the love story here is played gently but with conviction and surety.
Princess Nakaba of Senan and Prince Caesar of Belquat marry to seal a peace treaty between the 2 nations sharing the same island. Caesar is ready to hate Nakaba before he even really meets her simply because this is a political marriage and she has red hair instead of the royal black. Then he starts to get to know Nakaba and she totally changes his point of view. And he realizes maybe red hair is something special after all...
The art in this volume is particularly touching especially the friendship between Teo and Lala. The avalanche is resolved with a twist but not sure if it is a good twist or not... This is more a opinion thing and not a story thing, so I feel like supporting it until the end.
The story is coming together very quickly and Caesar is still playing a very passive role... I know women want their female characters to have all the power but this is just absurd... I guess though Loki is the one given the action roles and even some revelations about Adel will not change Loki's plans to shape the outcome himself.
Nakaba chooses the other option... simple but the ART is amazing, some of the best frames in the whole series!!
BOTTOM LINE: We are racing for the end with beautiful art!
I absolutely love everything about this volume. The stakes are getting higher with each chapter. The reveal with Loki, the conversations about half-human/Ajin's, and the heartbreak of Nakaba and Caesar. And the ending of this volume!! I squealed! Finally, the moment we've been waiting for.
I enjoyed this volume very much for the first half. I loved how the consequences of choice were being explored. I was entertained by Nakaba avoiding using her power so that she could be surprised on a date. All of it was wonderful. Nakaba has become such a sweet and gentle spirit, but then word must’ve come in from above that the series was ending in two volumes. In order to wrap up the story in time, Nakaba had a personality change, events were flung in a new direction, and (since I’ve read the next volume already) Nakaba’s personality was returned to her after the course had been set. I never liked the character who got the shaft, but the way things were resolved wasn’t believable. Yes, there was foreshadowing from before. Maybe this was all part of the mangaka’s plan, but Nakaba had to transform into a cynical, callous person for a few pages in order for the events to occur as they did.
Oh well. It was written eight years ago. There’s nothing to be done except enjoy the new direction.
"Io volevo vederti.
Whoa! There's only 2 more volumes after this one and everything is a giant snowball hurdling down the mountain! Speaking of which, Nakaba saves the Ajinn/Taboo child from the cave during an avalanche and adopts her as a sister. Her name is Lala, innocently named such from a human boy who befriended her in secret. Lala has an Arcana that graces her with superior hearing which she uses to reunite Nakaba and Caesar. It's also revealed Loki has the Arcana of Time all a long which is how he's so successfully saved Nakaba all these years. The volume ends with Nakba betraying her husband and ascending the throne in Senan. Interested to see how this story wraps up.
This volume was a lot more engaging, even if it was frustrating at times. The reveal of Loki's arcana of time was so beyond where I expected the story to go, it definitely changes my perspective on certain events.
And I'll be honest, a part of me is really, seriously, preferring Loki to Caesar. He just has a dedication and love that is incomparable.
Weirdly though, Adel actually moved me. I really disliked him before, but here I felt more warmth and softness towards him... as well as sympathy and sadness. He's actually not such a bad guy after all.
Nakaba has settled into her married life with Adel. But she still thinks of Caesar. She hopes whenever she is Queen, she can make positive change.
This was a volume with a lot of character growth. Nakaba finds out Loki has the same power as her. And I am still hoping that somehow Nakaba will be reunited with Caesar. Great volume.
I definitely see how this story is starting to wrap up now and I am excited to get to the end. The characters are strong and the plot is well paced. I like that characters take surprising but not out of character actions. This is a good strong series and this was a good volume.
This is when everything starts moving fast for no reason. Background characters are losing development and the plot is spiraling quickly to its conclusion. I also don’t really care for Adel’s addition to this story, he just feels like a budget Caesar but less likable.
the plot holes continue to get worse in this volume as apparently loki also had the arcana of time all along 🤦🏻♀️ what a dumb plot twist. i have so many questions i assume none of which will be answered. the last chapter is the only redeeming part of this volume
I honestly don't know how this is supposed to wrap up with just two more volumes?! But I am definitely going to find out! Parts of this felt a little off and out of place, but then Loki and that final page saved it ALL!
Talk about an insane plot twist. Or two. Or five?! This one was fantastic. I loved seeing Nakaba be more fierce like she was in the beginning of the series.
The political intrigue is great. I honestly think that Nakaba taking the throne by force was a great move for her kingdom, although I'm sure the nobles are going to disagree.
