This is the volume I've been waiting for. And it only took twelve tries! Love isn't front and center, but actual political intrigue and Yuri is finally showing off her bad ass fighter chick side. And yeah, I'll admit, I gave an audible gasp when Kail kissed her "goodbye" but with sixteen to go before the finale, we know it's only see you later. I feel bad for my teeny tiny little piece when other reviewers treat us to an in depth analysis of each conflict. And kudos to them, but a lot happens in manga (if it's a good series), and it's nearly impossible for me to recap it all, so my individual ratings are a bit short.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
What first drew me to this series was the romantic historical aspect. I loved how a modern day girl gets pulled back into the past. I don't know what it is about those stories that attract me so much, maybe it is the difficulty for the girl of fitting in and having to rely on the guy so much to be able to get along in the world.
I would really recommend this series to fans of Inuyasha, it has a lot of the same concepts.
I love this series! It is so much fun to see a manga series that takes place in a non-Japanese setting. And Kail and Yuri are so cute together! I hope Yuri decides to never go back to Japan and just stay in the Hittite empire for the rest of her life. :)
I found this series on a mere coincidence but it quickly became one of my all time favourites. I read the entire series in 1.5-2 days. It was truly wonderful and a joy to experience.
That explicit warning box on the cover isn't good news for romance, let me tell you. Quite the opposite. Trigger warning for sexual assault.
We're falling into a pattern here . . . sexual assaults on Yuri, wars that begin any time Yuri seems to be getting close to returning to Japan, the queen and her people gloating at their schemes . . . I honestly don't know how much this series has to offer. I'm getting pretty tired of these basic recurring plots, especially the sexual assaults (yes, far worse would have happened realistically, but it's a manga with magic! Come on, if you can bend some rules of the world for story, you can bend any). I'm going to give it another few volumes, but seeing as there's still 16 more (we're not even halfway through!) I don't know if I'll make it to the end.
Welcome to Book 12! I was originally going to give this a three star, because Kail is DEPLORABLE in this book, but then Yuri was like 'I pwn you all with my mad deductive skillz' and I thought she deserved an extra star for that.
So Kail is Crowned--wahoo! Way to go! Now for a million different marriage offers (literally, the library keeper feared for his assistants lives because there were so many clay tablets) and Kail wants no one but Yuri. Which he then tries to force the issue with. Ilbani (and Kikkuri for that matter) in a rare moment of betrayal of my feelings were ready to stand by, but Hadi would not let it stand! She helped Yuri and took her away while Kail had a moment with Ilbani (who pretty much saw through what he was trying to do--which was so everybody would hear that he had a falling out with Yuri. I cling to this hope like you wouldn't believe).
Meanwhile they hire some new maids and such and aren't they just so HELPFUL and GRACIOUS and SWEET towards Yuri? After giving her strawberries and getting her drunk they introduce her to a HUMBLE servant who has MANY questions.
Yuri pretty much sees through that shit and gets the job done to get rid of them.
And Urhi is making trouble for everyone in a rival nation because of reasons. He looks much better with only one eye let me tell you.
E stanno a guardare. Solo Hadi ha il coraggio di intervenire e di salvare Yuri.
Certo, Yuri lo perdona (??, OK si è fermato ma caspita!) e si prepara a dirgli addio. Lui non si spreca nemmeno a scusarsi..
Overall Rating: 2..../10 I re-read from teenager to grown up. Not the best idea...
This may be my third re-read of this series. I am pretty sure I read it twice in the first two years of it's release. I was young, I loved it. It was romantic. But after reading it this year (maybe +15 years later....), I was wrong. I just saw wrong turns, within wrong turns. Maybe as an adult, you see things differently.
If you,ve read a manga or book during your early years and end up reading them much later in life, you may end up like me- loving a series in the past and ruining it as the adult in you laughs for once enjoying them... :(
Do I recommend this: Unless you are under the age of 20 honestly...
