It’s the classic well-loved Robin Hood story with a little twist.
King Richard I has left England as a newly crowned king for leading the crusade to the holy land. Meanwhile England suffers under the regency of his younger brother John. When John Little’s home village is attacked while he’s hunting, he and a little girl, Marion are the only survivors. The flee and eventually encounter Robin Hood and his fellows.

So far so good, from here on there’ll be some spoilers!


I did not particularly like the characterization of Little John. The book was written in a way that one had the impression to know his thoughts and views and he seemed like a simpleton that often had rather suddenly an unexpected ingenious idea. I found it did not do his character justice. I like the idea of Marion becoming his ward, since they are the only survivors of their village. But then again, I did not quite sympathize with her characterization either. She was just a daughter of commeners and later became with help of Robin Hood and little John the ward of an aristocrat and the companion of his daughter. That is all nice and well, but I found it strange that both she and the aristocrat’s daughter are thought sword fighting. That just does not seem very probable. Since she is a little girl, she does not marry "the Robin Hood“ (don’t want to spoil everything).

Mostly I have the same objections for Robin, witty at some points, slow in other moments, or even ignorant to some rather obvious conspiracies. It did not harmonize well enough in my opinion. Though he was still likable.

As to the language, I don’t have any objections. It took me two or three pages to get used to rather short or elliptical sentences and the colloquial speech. I like the colloquial speech, it does not appear often in german novels and was rather refreshing. The story was mostly told from little Johns perspective and the short and elliptic sentences made it seem like we were reading his thoughts, though there was no first person view. It worked in some ways, but unfortunately for me he seemed like a simpleton.



All in all, the book is still an entertaining read, if you are looking for a Robin Hood story of the beaten track.

Schlechter Schreibstil (kurze, abgehackte Sätze oder oft nur einzelne Wörter, unnötig viele Inversionen und ständige Wiederholungen - so oft, wie sich die Charaktere gegenseitig zuzwinkern, muss man eher an nen mittelschweren Nervenschaden als an nonverbale Kommunikation denken...), Charaktere ohne jeden Tiefgang bzw. auf eine Art und Weise beschrieben, dass man sich wirklich fragt, wieso sie es überhaupt so weit bringen konnten (Little John, der von der Beschreibung her an einen nicht sonderlich intelligenten Höhlenmenschen erinnert, aber sofort zum Offizier aufsteigt...!? Robin Hood, der ach so gewitzte Anführer, der nicht merkt bzw. nicht merken will, wenn die eigene Verwandtschaft ihn verrät...!?), angerissene Handlungsstränge, die mehr oder weniger im Sand verlaufen... ich war selten so froh, als ich ein Buch endlich durchgelesen hatte. Und selten war es mir so egal, wie es ausgeht. Oder, wie es die Charaktere im Buch bei wirklich jeder Gelegenheit sagen würden: "Schon recht."
