Stockholm syndrome?

There’s a ton of violence and vigilantism in this tale. Elodie acknowledges that she is a beast with actions motivated by both the greater good and love of violence. But those are not the only traits that define her as a person. She can and does love Aya. Their journey is not pretty but the do find their way to each other. This is both an interesting and somewhat disturbing story, but what do you expect from vampires.

Great read!

The blurb about the book sounded intriguing, so I bought it. I really enjoyed it. Good v. Evil. Good generally wins in a twisted kind of way. What's not to like?

i really didn’t think this book was going to go the way it did, when it said it was dark i was expecting less dark from the main character and more darkness from the antagonist

Okay, wow. I was excited to read this but I was left quite underwhelmed. I didn’t think it was 𝘣𝘢𝘥, but it wasn’t that good either. I’ve never read a dark romance before and wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into, but I really liked how things were going before Elodie kidnapped Aya. From there on, the more I read, the less I enjoyed the book. There was literally no slow-burn; it felt more like instalove/instalust, and I struggled to understand how Aya came to love Elodie so easily in the end?? The pacing also felt off to me in the last section of the book, and I wasn’t even interested in Elodie’s chapters by then. I hardly skimmed over them just for the sake of reading them in order to get to Aya’s chapters. Overall, the book was disappointingly shallow in various different aspects—especially lacking in nuance and grace when handling violent and traumatic themes. After a certain point, it becomes so repetitive and overdone that it loses its impact. However, I’m assuming that wasn’t the point of the book anyway, so maybe I’m being a little too harsh on that matter. I thought that Aya and Elodie’s relationship was oddly paced as well, and I found both of their characters difficult to like. I did enjoy the supernatural elements of the book, though! The author’s take on vampires was very refreshing and kept me curious with the way that tidbits of information/lore were gradually revealed. I picked it up as a low-effort midnight read and it was entertaining for what it was, but I probably wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

This was a very weird book. I didn't realize it was part of a series until I had finished, but also, that didn't seem to matter at all. (It does not seem to be a traditional series in any sense of the word.) This was may be more horror than romance? I think there were vampires but also, like, just weird supernatural stuff. (I might also be confusing parts of this w/ Long Time Dead and The Roses of Pieria which were similar and I read within the same 3-month span.) I can't say I liked it, but I didn't hate it. I don't really recommend it to anyone, and don't remember too much about it other than that it was weird and sometimes did not make a lot of sense. This is par for the course with about 30% at least of the Kindle Unlimited books I read. I actually think I might cancel my subscription soon as it really only encourages me to read a bunch of stuff that's barely 1 step above the quality of fanfiction. (Sometimes, I often think it IS fanfiction, just names and terminology changed to escape copyright, and cleaned up slightly. I don't think this is one of those, however? Or if it is, it's for a fandom I don't know and it's unrecognizable to me.)

I didn’t like this book. I’m not a huge fan of dark fiction, and while this wasn’t the darkest, I was cringe-ing through some (most) of it. For the genre, it was fairly well written, so my main gripe was truly with the plot being predictable.
I didn’t truly… like or care about the two main characters as more than entertainment. In fact, Jayden was probably my favorite character and they spoke only a handful of times.
Maybe, completely possible, I misread some scenes, but I am fairly sure that the only two POC characters truly given any screentime were minor characters in a single scene. One of which was a child SA victim and the other, an adult black woman without a single speaking line. So… there are technically named POC characters, but I wouldn’t say the story is truly diverse. (We spend most of the 300 pages with Aya and Elodie, who are both white women).

All this being said, I did finish the book so…. I guess it kept me entertained🧍‍♀️

3.5 I was loving this book for the for the first half or so bc of the vampirism and concerning yet endearing obsessive behavior, but honestly once Aya fell and started sleeping with Elodie for seemingly no reason I felt myself starting to lose interest. Although the spice was spicy I was like why are you doing this with the woman holding you captive. It’s not like she’s beating or starving you.

It then started to feel repetitive. The scene in DC where they killed that vampire seemed pointless and by the time Aya was kidnapped I realized I was no longer really invested in these characters. Although I wanted Aya to be turned the turning was a bit anticlimactic. Her sister and Adrienne’s story started to pique my interest again. Book 2 focuses on them so we’ll see how that goes.

Elodie has no character growth or redeeming qualities except for her unexplained obsessive love for Aya and I'm not sure that's a good thing. I almost dropped the story midway but decided to continue. The ending made up for it because of the introduction of a much more interesting character who is also the true hero of the story and it's only because of her and Sands that I'm looking forward to reading the next installment House of Sand.

Exhilarating

I've been wanting to read this book for ages and it finally popped up on KU! It was everything and more than I could have wanted. The characters are brilliantly written and there are so many twists and turns I couldn't put it down. If you like a dark romance then get this now.

For the Gore-Whores, 100%!! There's easily enough background to keep it solid story, and I do enjoy that for a short time Elodie is genuinely, deeply in the wrong and gets forced to see why.

P.S. As much as I enjoy this book, I don't quite see the others in the DN set as necessary, and I'm actually glad each is standalone.

Overall good read.

FULL OF LUST!! Ugggh!! Made my jaw drop quite a few times.

Love the non-binary representation in this book with one of the characters.

Be aware that there are very graphic elements in this book so please be prepared.

no thank you, bc wtf was that? The world can be ugly and there’s a way to write about it without including sexuality in her “healing” journey especially given her background. Everyone here needs some serious therapy.

Just so underwhelming and poorly structured. There was nothing actually taboo about the romance except for the vamp character stalking the human, and there was just about no explanation as to why.

DNF at 44%. This was too surface level and I didn’t really enjoy the dynamic between Aya and Elodie. It started off strong but I had to DNF because it was no longer interesting after Elodie kidnapped Aya. I expected more from the story, I think I would have liked it more if the relationship was more of a slow build. From Elodie’s POV, it was instalove and instalust, and from Aya’s POV, it was instalust. And neither of those tropes are my favourite. Lastly, the fantasy/vampire aspects are also a bit generic and there doesn’t seem to be much plot to enjoy either, so I’m done.

My first take on a novel from Rojana Krait. I really implore anyone who is thinking of reading this to take a look at the TW’s via author’s website. They were all accurate and helped me prepare myself for what I was delving into.

The plot stood out to me because I don’t come across many stalking/kidnapping wlw books. I think this was written well, especially from Elodie Glass’ perspective. I enjoyed the banter between both Elodie and Aya. I wished it did not feel as insta-lovey as it did. I do think the romance built up midway to the end. There was substantial chemistry that did not make it feel like the relationship was solely insta-love though.

I wish the formatting was a bit easier to read. That is totally a personal reader’s opinion though! The explicit sex scenes I wanted to have been written with a bit more description and lengthier (for each one).

Some events in the book were a bit rough for me to get through (once again, read TW’s). Looking past those parts, it was a solid 3* and was positive overall.

➢Happy reading!

Ugh loved this. I read this book so fast. I ate this shit up. Generally this is not my genre but broooo-so good. There’s definitely some taboo shit in here that made me go 🤨, but it’s so enjoyable to read. I’m super excited for Jayden‘s book specifically. I love when a romance series goes through povs of a friend group or siblings. This storyline was so interesting and I loved how it dove into trauma. I actually dk who of the two fmcs I liked more. This was just such a fun read and it’s sad that it seems like such an underrated series!! More people need to hear about this!! This was a reading slump crusher for me. 🫶🫶🫶🫶please keep writing fucked up sapphics. Werewolves next??

This book was hard to put down and did an excellent job at being immersive and engaging. It isn't as graphic or gory as one would presume based on the title, but it does explore some relationship dynamics that are not suitable for younger audiences, in my humble opinion. Vampire fans will find this book presents an interesting perspective.
