CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.

In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.

In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.

This is easily my most (?) favorite issue of the series. I even shed a few tears while reading this because it touched me where it counts :)

I love the artwork, especially how Watanuki, the main male character, is drawn. In one panel he's made to look like a member of a boy band or an actor in a drama, and the next panel he's screeching like a banshee.

The ladies behind this manga are extraordinary.

In which Watakanuki gives Kohane-chan a balloon, and we discover Himawari's secret.

This is one of my very favorite volumes, after the sad park bench ghost in Volume 6. When I started the series, I loved the art and the Japanese folk tales, distrusted the emphasis on fate as an explanation for coincidence, and was faintly annoyed by the excitable, pinch-faced lead. Watanuki has changed--stronger and wiser in his love for the people he loves, gentler with those who are weaker than he is--but my perception of him and of the loss and fear behind the prickly defensiveness has also changed. Everyone in XxxHolic wears masks, except Kohane, who is too young, and Yuuko, who is too powerful, and all the masks are hiding the same thing: fear of hurt and of giving hurt. Watanuki has learned he has more than pain to give, and gives it; and so do others here.

The second half of this volume really got to me, because of Watanuki's sacrifice, and Himawari and Domeki's sacrifices on his behalf.

The art isn't as elaborate as in previous volumes, aside from the smoke that indicates something spiritual is going on, and Yuko's usual excellent fashion sense. Still, the storytelling and the characters' bonds more than make up for that.

Review for complete series

xxxHolic is not the type of manga that I would usually pick up - somehow, stories about stores with special services have never really caught my interests. As it happens to be a CLAMP manga which is heavily interwoven with Tsubasa and also has ties to Blood C, I knew I'd at the very least have to give it a chance. The good thing is, apart from the ending, it's a pretty neat manga series.

Watanuki has always attracted ghosts and spirits and he wishes they would just go away. Fate leads him to Yuko's wish-granting shop, but wishes don't come for free. In order for Watanuki's wish to be granted, he must work in the store and becomes involved in all manners of the supernatural.

The art is easily recognisable as CLAMP's, yet it is different. Everything is in black and whites with no greyscales and the characters' eyes are rather empty looking, even the covers are anything but vibrant. But this is actually very well suited for the atmosphere of this series. I only wish that, similar to Tsubasa, the characters' limbs weren't so unnaturally long.

What I first thought to be a rather bland set of characters soon turned out to be a much deeper and very likeable bunch. It's odd, I was against every character from the start and I can't even put my finger on when it changed, but I ended up loving them all. I must confess, I preferred the first three-quarters of the story more - Watanuki becomes a more serious character after certain events and I just prefered him the way he was before. That being said, I can understand how and why he changed.

Although there is an underlying story that is interlaced with Tsubasa, the rest of the series is very much episodic. The different episodes all revolve around legends and myths and it's very interesting to read about them. Not only are the origins explained, but given the modern setting of this series, they are always shown with a contemporary sample. I am only guessing here, but I feel as though having visited Japan and recognising various elements increased my enjoyment of this series as it really is very heavy on Japanese-lore. This holds particularly true about the Jorougumo chapters - there's just something very unsettling about these joro spiders.

The story can be a little slow at times but it generally has good pacing. It's a nice balance between humour, horror and a bit of moral lecturing - in a good way. Unfortunately, as is often the case, the ending isn't exactly satisfying. In fact, it's not that much of an ending at all; would I not know that this series is complete with 19 volumes, I'd think there is more to come. Thanks to its episodic nature, this series can in a sense conclude at any time it wants to. Yet the underlying story is left hanging in the air and there's nothing in terms of closure. CLAMP has started a sequel (which is one of their many works on hiatus - surprise!) which may or may not remedy this issue at some point, but for that, one will need to wait for the sequel to conclude. Otherwise, there are a few glimpses of Watanuki in Blood C which I feel not that many people know of - have a look if you care to see more of what happened to Watanuki post xxxHolic!

This volume starts with a creepy body in a creepy house. Kohane and Domeki trying to protect Watanuki, etc.

BUT the biggest part of this volume is the reveal of the Himawari thing.

Oh the Himawari thing. It hurts so much. She's such a good person, and she sounds so defeated and lonely...so having Watanuki stand by her...my heart soars and also cries.

Domeki saying "all three of us will have lunch..." <4 He's best boy. He tried to help Watanuki, and he gave so much to save him... strong OT3 energy here.

We also love Watanuki thinking twice about helping Himawari because of what he learned.

The baby bird! ;_; Oh I remember this! I just loved this volume. It's so good!

I love how everything ties together in this series, little things and minor characters return and affect the story. They have a purpose when originally introduced, some plot is followed but they also resurface to serve the plot anew. I enjoy that.

Side note, Syaoran saved Watanuki?!?! I'm confused.

I’m a sucker for whump so I love this whole mini arc, but not just bc of that. We see how Watanuki has forged strong relationships (enough that they’re willing to pay dearly to save him), but also how he’s grown and changed. The old Watanuki would have insisted on fixing Himawari regardless of the cost/potential fallout, but now he’s able to understand that sometimes the price isn’t worth the cost.

I am happy that, unlike the anime, we actually see that his finger is paralyzed, and I am kinda curious why/what that means (though I suspect it won’t be explained)... I am very curious now about that person from another world and what part of the price they paid to save him (if Doumeki gave him a blood transfusion essentially and Himawari took his scars...?)...

Soon I’ll finally be past the anime material and I’m very curious to see how it develops even though I know Watanuki has a sad story overall...

This volume made me really sad. Watanuki is such a good boy. In the critical moments, he's much like Syaoran. Domeki is like Toya. I feel bad for the black-haired girl. I kept thinking she's like the young woman who served the bad guy and ended up betraying him, but she's just an unfortunate one. Sure she could have told Watanuki what was happening but I can't fault her for wanting to be close to the one person who was always happy to see her.

She had such a terrible life so it's a miracle she's so kind. I hope the pet Watanuki will give her will make her happier. Domeki is amazing. He's sacrificed his body and half of his eye for Watanuki. I'm really curious about his role in this story.

What Yuuko was reading from Himawari was the big plot point that came to a head in this volume of xxxHolic. The series is continuing to progress in fun directions! Watanuki has begun to open up more to the idea of having friends (even if he won't admit it about Doumeki), and the care he has for the people he meets isn't a quality of his we should ignore. Although the spiritual world and recurring character reappearances did make the start of the volume clunky (honestly surprised we didn't get wrap up for Kohane), the emotional core picks up some of the pace.

While helping a Nekomusume retrieve special water to pay Yuko - and pondering the strange woman that watches him from the nearby house - Watanuki finds his luck growing worse - and unless he's willing to accept the shocking truth about a close friend, his life could be in danger...CLAMP keep the tension high in this intriguing entry, wondrous back to back mysteries that will keep readers hooked! Has the time finally come for Watanuki to understand where his bad luck is coming from...?

Yuko has Watanuki and Domeki gather water from a special well, which results in an unsettling encounter. Watanuki meets the little girl medium again and has another dream with Domeki's grandfather. Then there is a story about Watanuki's cute classmate and we finally learn her secret which has been hinted at over time.

Still love this series. This volume was a bit slow.

I did enjoy seeing Watanuki fill up the glass baubles with untouched water that was then given to the world with acid rain. Then Watanuki received the egg that Sakura risked her life to retrieve as payment for the water.
