For more than 30 years, Messenger Elijah Muhammad has been teaching the so-called Negroes of America on the proper foods to eat to improve their mental power, physical appearance, for prevention of illness, curing of ailments and prolonging life.
Before it became a fad, Messenger Muhammad advocated eating whole wheat and staying away from bleached, white enriched flour. He has taught and maintained fats should be reduced and eliminated from the diet. He has warned about the dangers of eating from cans and wax cartons. He has cautioned the so-called Negroes to take better care in selecting food to eat.
Mr. Muhammad has stated the so-called Negro should eat the young, fresh green vegetables. He has stated the lima bean, black-eyed peas and other field beans do not have food values good for the body and that they are very hard and damaging to the digestive tract.
For more than 30 years, the Muslim home has stressed the baking of foods and not frying. He has cautioned his followers to be conscious of weight. Penalties are exacted from Muslims found overweight.
All of Messenger Muhammad's teaching on foods and weight have been studied by white scientists, doctors and dieticians. Finally, 1959, actuaries released new average weight charts for men and women. It was no mere coincidence that their findings coincide with what Messenger Muhammad had been teaching. It was practically a verbatim transcript of the papers they confiscated when the federal government arrested him in 1942.
This was followed up with a featured story on weight in the "U.S. News & Word Report," Nov. 2, 1959, which was condensed in "Reader's Digest," Feb, 1960. Their story, too, followed what Messenger Muhammad has been teaching for 30 years, that is, except the portions which advise eating pork, "Coronet" magazine, also in Feb., 1960, published an article on weight and new weight charts, according to the plan of Mr. Muhammad. And, in the April 11, 1960 edition, the "U.S. News & World Report" again reported a detailed account on the foods to eat. As one Muslim said, "They really listened to Mr. Muhammad, but they mixed it up and added to it." Everyone would do well to read this book by Mr. Muhammad on the proper foods to eat. His advice adds to your life.

I'll be honest. I only read up to chapter 26 out of 57. I just couldn't take the repetitive writing any longer. Basically: eat small navy beans, eat fresh vegetables and fruits (but don't eat potatoes, kale, collard greens, nor green cabbage), eat once a day (every 24 hours), eat every other day, eat 2 times every three days, (with increasing healthiness the fewer times you eat in a given time period--eating 2 times every three days is considered the healthiest). Don't eat processed sugars nor artificial foods. These are considered poisons. Don't eat freshly baked bread nor bread which is made from white refined flour. Only eat whole wheat flour (NOT whole grain--it's too hard on the stomach) and cook the bread two or three times to ensure it's safe to consume. Bread should be either stale or cooked multiple times to ensure it can be digested properly and it is safe on the stomach.
What interests me the most about his point in the writings is that he emphasizes the ability for human beings to live up to 1,000 years if they follow these teachings. He explained that 70 or 80 years is just the beginning of life by Noah's and Methuseleh's standards. 200 or 300 years of life is considered a 'good age' -- basically what we consider 60 years of life nowadays. Elijah Muhammad himself only lived to 72 years of age (or 78 can't remember). He ended up dying from bronchitis, asthma, diabetes, and heart disease (atherosclerosis). All of the ailments of a poor diet which he emphasized so excruciatingly could be avoided through following his teachings. I'm not saying he is a hypocrite. He explained in chapter 20 (How to Eat to Live book 2) that he was a 'messenger' for Allah and that by having these ailments himself he could relate to the followers of Islamic teachings better and show them the errors of his ways. I suppose he is trying to say that he himself would not live to 150 or 250 or 350 years because his goal in life was to show others how to eat to live and how the struggle can be overcome (he had diabetes, heart issues, and other health issues).
What I find extremely striking is that in that same chapter 20, Elijah Muhammad predicts his death won't be from murder, stating, "god wouldn't allow it" or something along those lines. Pretty amazing that he was correct. He died from the very ailments he tried to hard to fight. Pretty ironic. But also pretty polarizing. I suppose his message is made stronger by the fact that he died from the struggle he was trying to overcome. In some ways that makes him a rhetorical genius. But his message would be the strongest if he actually did live to 350. But I digress-- I highly doubt any human being could live that long regardless of their diet. The machines of genetics and the cells don't have that capability--yet. All in all, the read was long and boring. fuck

Although repetitive, Elijah Muhammad gave/gives excellent advice to his followers. Eating once a day (fasting) and eating high-quality, simple foods will rid the body of ailments, aches, and sicknesses. Abstaining from low-quality, hyper-processed foods will lead to longevity and fruitful living.
