Excellent book! And thoroughly informed on all-things Baptist (until 1984).

If you're a masochist, this book is also for you. Dry as ice, but well worth the read.

Makes me proud to be a Free Will Baptist.

Read for a seminary Baptist History class. It was helpful in certain areas, dreadfully boring in others, and completely outdated today (written in 1987). The author showed a definite moderate bias theologically.

Like all history books, this one is written from a specific point of view. However, the author does an excellent job of giving a comprehensive overview of Baptist history. It is old, so one will need to read another book for a history of the last 30 years.

Comprehensive history of Baptists, primarily in England and over Northern and Southern Baptists in America. It's probably too comprehensive to recommend since their are more succinct works out there. However, this book is going to be a phenomenal reference tool if I need to know about a certain person, era, or place. He manages to write mini-bio's of some of the Baptists' greatest leaders that are generally 2–5 pages. He normally offers an account of their life, a significant quote, and their importance to the Baptist movement.

I can't remember which review I read this in, but someone recommended reading the century summaries to understand an account. I would go one step further and say if you read those plus the introductions and conclusions to every chapter, you would have a pretty succinct understanding of Baptist history in each era.

This definitely has inspired me to read some early Baptist works by people such as Roger Williams, Abraham Booth, and Andrew Fuller!

Great book. McBeth provides the standard work on Baptist history. However, the book screams for revisions. Much history has occurred in Baptist history since 1987, particularly with the SBC.
