The Bible truly is one of the most magnificent and mysterious books ever written. It is full of miraculous stories and supernatural events. There are qualities in the people of the Bible we can venerate and emulate. There are qualities we can and need to despise. These qualities often happen within the same individual throughout the course of their lives!
The Bible is a reflection of the people's interactions with God - it is a story about US. We can see ourselves in the self-centered lifestyles of the likes of Sampson. We can try to be wise like Solomon. We can feel the pains felt by the struggling Disciples of Jesus, and we know we've been there as we denied truth when faced by fear.
Given all of this, Grant Jeffrey completely misses all this majesty and mystery, and relegates the Bible to merely a set of facts to prove or disprove. He misses God's breath in the lives of those about whom the stories are shared, and by extension, God's Spirit in our own lives. The bible information is to be controlled, not learned from. I'll grant I couldn't make it through this volume in its entirety, but was so caught up by his missing of the point of someone writing, preserving, and often giving their lives to preserve these stories over the millennia. In this, the book may have some fun facts with which to dazzle your friends, but can create of it an idol, both in literal scripture and idea of God within it.
