After an introduction to materials and equipment, the author turns to the importance of sketching, showing how to capture a scene with quick pencil drawings for later use in the studio. Subsequent chapters explore outdoor painting in locations all over the world, from Scottish mountain storms and snow in Wiltshire to the dry heat of the Arizona desert or a hill village in Crete. The different approaches needed for these wide-ranging subjects are explored, with the emphasis on simplification and versatility. The colour mixes, washes and brushes used for the paintings are described throughout. Includes both simple sketches for the beginner and more complicated ones for the more advanced artist.
