One or more players are responsible for the murder of two of Team Blue's members, and word about The Tournament is reaching the masses. As the rules underpinning the contest are seemingly falling apart, the race is on to recruit a new Team Blue before another Tournament is called. Ian, from Team Green, is fairly certain he knows who the murderer is, but is called in to help train the new Team Blue, who are all very young and have no experience. In all likelihood, they'll be the first target for easy 'kills'—but not everything is as it seems, and the next Tournament might not be as unknown as before, nor have the expected outcome.
There seemed to be more action in this book, as the action moves between teams and our stolid insurance investigator accompanied by a Tournament courier. Ian became a more likeable character this time—he was a bit of a blank slate in the first book, and he came more alive in this one. Ellie also has promise, although whether that will change as she becomes a fully-fledged member of Team Blue remains to be seen. There's also the intrigue of who committed the murders, and a couple of the characters I especially disliked got a certain amount of comeuppance this time.
On to book 3....
