Such a different story than the first 8 volumes in the series! It take a little getting used to Thorfinn as a farm slave when we're used to him being a warrior on the battlefield. I'm loving his growing friendship with Einar. I have a feeling they'll learn a lot from each other.

Thorfinn's a shell of who he used to be. There's a pretty shocking scene in the book where we get to see just for a second the old fire in Thorfinn, so he's in there somewhere.

And we get to see what's been going on with Canute. He's also a vastly different character than he was in previous volumes. He's becoming a leader people follow willingly. I also loved the small bit we get to see of Thorkell.

This slave arc will be a little difficult for me to digest because Thorfinn's emotional lethargy hurts me a lot, that is, the fact that he feels empty and without the will to live makes me very sad because that is not the way of life that Thors wanted for him, the best thing about Vol. is the parallel story of Prince Canute since it seems to me that after Thorfinn Canute has one of the best character developments and seeing him on another path very different from Thorfinn is very interesting.

Thorfinn may claim he’s unafraid of death, but whether it's instinct or muscle memory, one truth emerges: his body still wants to live. In contrast, Einar is all life, the very opposite of Thorfinn. Well, what does it mean to be alive?

And we also see Canute again. Just like Thorfinn, he’s changed, but his path leads deeper into power, while Thorfinn drifts in search of purpose.

Ghost of ones past start to catch up with Thorfinn as he tries to become a better man and atone for his past sins. Once again the action begins to heat up with a few battle sequences spread throughout this volume. Another great read in the series of 11 released collections so far.

Nice "quiet" volume.

The story is taking shape, i really liked it. King Canute is a badass, he grew a lot and it looks like he's very competent, and Thorkell, he didn't change at all but i love it, he's so funny and i can't wait to see him go berserk on someone.

I'm loving the farm storyline, i love Thorfinn and Einar's relationship and their exchanges. Not a lot of memorable characters on this farm but maybe the new character that appears is the exception. I hope so, he seems really cool.

Overall, i like the turn that the story took, can't wait to see where it leads us.

I like how slavery is tackled here. It shows that Yukimura brings more to the table than a skin-deep level understanding of the problem. It's not all about "ugh, slavery is just bad and tragic because you get whipped by your master".

We get to see some more intricate power dynamics at work between different groups of disenfranchised people competing with one another for limited resources. We can assume how they could possibly arrive at this kind of antagonistic mindset and how it keeps them in line.

The character of the master is interesting. He's not some sort of a stereotypically sadistic psychopath. Instead he's written to be a man who can gaze upon his idyllic land and even go and blithely mingle with his serfs and keep up the pretence of benevolence, because he's not the one who directly manages his estate. He doesn't even need to intervene that much in anything, doesn't need to get his hands dirty, because the poor oppress each other well enough on their own. That's a pretty satisfactory depiction of internalised exploitation to me.

Also, on the level of imagery, I like how Yukimura takes some time to actually show the toil and the physical exhaustion that is the main part of a slave's life. This kind of dedication to depicting the mundane realities of every-day existence, the ordinary day's plight, was something I missed in the war arc.

War arc was by and large a story about prevalent violence of the period, but there wasn't actually that much gore. Yukimura made one of the main characters a jaded type with a superiority complex who admits he despises Vikings for their crude brutality among other things, but then we actually didn't get to see that much of the said brutality explicitly. When a village gets pacified, you realise that it's bad and reprehensible, but the event is not represented as some sort of a Dantean horror scene that would truly drive home the point that perhaps Vikings are not so cool.

Imo, this kind of rather timid representation of Vikings' violence makes it far too easy to move on and continue to enjoy their bloody adventures without much cognitive dissonance. It's what makes it possible to find Thorkell's warmongering amusing. "Oh, they pillage villages, they terrorise the civilians, but they're Vikings after all, that's what they do, such were the times".

So it's good to see that Yukimura is concerned with depicting slavery and exploitation realistically. It feels like Thorfinn's slavery will be an honest exploration of the topic rather than a mere "fall from grace" episode.

(Edit: Well, all of these concerns get pretty much resolved in the next volume, though xD)

This is the 9th Omnibus collection of Vinland Saga and was just as wonderful as previous installments in the series. The detailed artwork, story, and characters are amazing. This is my absolute favorite manga series of all time.

In this series we learn more about Thorfinn’s past after meeting Hild, a young woman whose whole life was shaped by Thorfinn’s past actions. Thorfinn is desperately trying to continue his quest to create a peaceful place to settle, however he keeps getting drawn into events and politics from his past.

Thorkill is also in the story quite a bit and we see how he is going through war withdrawal (which is actually kind of funny). We also run into Floki again and are caught up on the political troubles of the region.

The illustration continues to be very detailed and just amazing. I am always impressed by how much research and historical background are included in these books. The characters are amazing and the story is absolutely engrossing.

Overall another absolutely fantastic addition to this series. I absolutely love this graphic novel series and continue to be amazed at the consistent quality of each volume. I recommend this series to everyone, it’s just so well done!

🌾 Volume 9 – The Weight of the Past (Chapters 62–70)

Thorfinn’s nightmares haunt him. The men he’s killed, the innocence he’s lost — all come crashing down in dream sequences that are as brutal as any sword fight.

Einar becomes the mirror Thorfinn never had. Their friendship, built on sweat and soil, becomes the quiet heartbeat of the story.
No swords. No enemies. Just forgiveness — slow, painful, earned.

This volume teaches that redemption isn’t dramatic. It’s backbreaking work.
And somehow, that’s more powerful than any battle.

I really loved and enjoyed this more “quiet” volume. While odd to see the protagonist so empty and broken, it goes to show that Askeladd was right — what does Thorfinn have if not his desire for revenge? It’s the only thing he’s ever focused on, after all. We still really don’t quite understand who Thorfinn really is. I’m looking forward to more of this arc. Especially going back to see more Prince Canute and Thorkell, because he’s just as funny and unhinged as always!

This sudden story shift really threw me off. I was very invested in the characters and conflicts of the first arc, and really wanted to see where they were headed, and I thought it would all be at the center of everything... only to now be told that it was all actually just a prologue - a backstory - still important on its own, but in a different way and to a lesser extent than I thought, never quite at the center of things.

I miss Askeladd. He shouldn't have gone down the way he did.

Ah, cover paling mengenaskan menurutku.
