Ann Sheridan was much more than just Hollywood's glamorous and sexy "Oomph Girl." She was also a versatile actress who beguiled movie audiences with her vibrant personality and no-nonsense acting style opposite some of the biggest stars of the time like James Cagney, Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant, and Errol Flynn. She excelled in multiple genres, including drama, comedy, and musical, with ease and individual style. Several of her movies, like Angels with Dirty Faces, Kings Row, and I Was a Male War Bride endure today as classic films from Hollywood's Golden Age.
In this first-ever full-length biography, Ann Sheridan's colorful life and 34-year career are examined in detail, including her long climb to motion picture stardom, the years as a top box-office draw, her three marriages, and other significant romantic relationships.
Finally a biography for Ann Sheridan! It’s relatively short, but does a good job of covering her life and her career. But mostly her career. The author admits up front to being a big fan of Sheridan’s and occasionally throws in some superlatives reminding us of that. But mostly he doesn’t let his opinions get in the way of telling Sheridan’s story.
Perhaps necessarily for a subject who died nearly sixty years ago and apparently didn’t leave any memoir, diary or letters, we don’t get to know Sheridan’s non-professional side very deeply. But this may be the best we can hope for unless someone uncovers a trove of papers from one of her several paramours, especially powerful press agent Steve Hannagan. (I just now see that Hannagan has a book about him, so I may need to check that out to see if there are any revelations about Sheridan there.)
I am a great fan of Ann Sheridan. She had such a great personality shining through the screen. Bearing in mind that the author was unable to interview anybody who knew her he has done a very good job of piecing together her life and career history. Like so many of her contemporaries ahead cut adrift with the ending of the studio system. Even sadder was the fact that her 3 packs a day cigarette habit led her to a premature feath. A star well remembered by this book.
