Penilaian
Tema (latar, aspek sosial budaya, atmosfer visual): 4.5 Konstruksi Narasi (plot, karakter, pacing): 3.5 Konstruksi Misteri (trik, proses pemecahan, clueing): 4.0
Apa Saya Berhasil Menebak Pelakunya?
Nope!
there was actually math in this and i’m disgusted. like you think i picked up this book to do math??!! anyway this was over the top as usual but after a nice break from the pattern of who the killer usually is in the previous volume, the author returned to the same pattern in this volume even though in my opinion the attempt to not make it as blatant was a failed one. i still figured it out. i also did not enjoy this one as much as the others and found it difficult to focus on as well as unnecessarily long.
'Murder at the Hanging School' is one of the best Youth Kindaichi Casebook murder mysteries!
Premise: Kindaichi and Miyuki went to a famed school to help the former to boost his poor grades. However, the school was haunted by many suicide cases committed by the students, all of them dead by hanging, and there are also rumors about a death curse from the World War II era...
Soon, students were murdered during the exam season, and a teacher was detained by the police, but is she the real murderer?
It's one of the Kindaichi murder mysteries that truly feels very tragic, and I like how the murderer schemed to kill the victims!
The Kindaichi Case Files (Kindaichi Shonen no Jikenbo) is a long running manga series published by Kodansha in Japan. They feature gruesome murders with convoluted solutions and this one is a perfect example of how utterly bizarre and twisted the solutions to these cases can be. The setting is a prep school where kids are known for hanging themselves, and during exam time, three boys kill themselves in rapid succession. Or did they? Find out for yourself, it's a fun, fun read.
Anyway, Kindaichi ends up at a prep school promising amazing results with university entrance exams and it turns out to be the typical Kindaichi pressure cooker where things simmer for about a chapter and then boil over for the rest of the book.
This is an okay outing. It has a devious locked room mystery with an elegantly inelegant solution and the book delightfully spends roughly a quarter of its length exposing the murderer, whose scheme is aggressively complicated, even by series standards.
The problem is that the suspect pool is even less interesting than usual and the entire case really hinges on the police not just being incompetent but willfully negligent in finding evidence. It’s plenty of fun during the denouement, but it’s not the most sturdy of the series’ cases - also the explanation for a side mystery about a painting is utterly lame.
There are some severe logic lapses (and again, that’s even acknowledging that this series thrives on those) that kill a bit of the fun too - with nothing isolating them with the culprit, why the hell do any of these students keep coming to school?
Worthwhile, but after the last one this is a bit of a step down.
Each case in this manga is a stand alone mystery, and this volume does not feature any unusual reappearances from earlier in the series. So while it's best to read them in order it's not necessary to enjoy the individual stories.
When Hajime and Miyuki apply to an exclusive prep school (under the usual manipulations of Kindaichi's mother) his tests scores don't exactly make the cut. The interviewing teacher gives Hajime a different challenge of his unique skills - he gets into the school on the condition of investigating a disturbing act of vandalism the teacher has been accused of. What our two hopefuls don't know is that they've just entered "hanging high"...
No Noose is Good Noose presents several interesting interconnected puzzles. There's a locked room mystery, mysterious rituals harkening back to the tragic past of the school and a supposed curse, and a haunted painting left by a deceased student. The background stories are intriguing and between the specter of past suicides and the air of bullying and suspicion there a real feeling of menace throughout. There's a lot of clever elements to the mysteries and their solutions, particularly in Kindiachi's approach.
That said, while everything's is very logical and still very much in the realm of fair play towards the reader, there are more obscured details this time around. The core mystery can be pieced out to a certain extent, but I wouldn't call it strictly "solvable", which puts this one a notch below the others in some sense. There are also some characters with somewhat suspicious behavior that's never really explained, which makes it look like the author just wanted to make them suspects.
Though not without a few missteps, No Noose is Good Noose is a very good mystery and another worthwhile case to follow Hajime on.
The Kindaichi Case Files never disappoints in bringing you an ingeniously plotted detective story. No Noose is Good Noose is no exception to this rule. The complexity of the deceit is overwhelming and the modus operandi is quite unbelievable. But that were never negative assets to this series. To the contrary. A Kindaichi-mystery should always be a totally over-the-top and crazy mind trip. That's exactly the point. Enough details are given upfront to make it possible for the reader to figure it out before Kindaichi calls all the suspects into one room. But don't get your hopes up. It takes a brilliant mind to see through the motivation of the players. Nevertheless it is a fun ride with never a boring moment.
2019 reread: Another interesting case that stuck in my head even after years of read. Even tho the issues brought up in the case are still relevant to these days, one of them is a taboo which I started to think that it's a pattern by the authors to question morality of the readers to a certain degree. Still, it's fun!
One of the best stories in The Kindaichi Case Files series, with chilling setup, cleverly written murder mystery, lots of plot twists and a meaningful story. After so many years it's still one of my favorite.
Great pick for mystery lovers! Definitely one you'll want to finish in one sitting... the art and the plot are done to creepy perfection and you need to know 'whodunnit' before you lay the book down.
