As far as the volumes in this first set of the manga go, I do feel like this one is pretty packed full of a few different stories that variate pretty wildly in their intensity. There are a couple that are simply one-offs, predominantly being the first chapter and the last two chapters, with the stories in-between spanning at least two chapters apiece and focusing on developing more of Ryoko and then Sasami.

Our chapters on Sasami were some that stuck with me for a long time, and I do believe they're included in the "Sasami Stories" special volume that got released by Viz with the reprint of the series. Back when I used to read the manga all the time in middle school and high school, I felt like these particular chapters were the strongest of those in this volume, and to some extent I feel like that still holds true. Certainly they're some of the most memorable. The chapters focusing on Ryoko are, I feel, grossly underrated in regards to her character development. I do love seeing her more tender side get utilized by Hitoshi Okuda, and these days I appreciate those chapters far more.

I think the chapter "Simple Joys" is one I appreciate far more these days after really getting more invested into researching the lore of the main 'verse for Tenchi Muyo!, because it's a pretty good look at Yosho's contentment, and a solid reminder of the special connection between a Juraian and their bonded tree. Seeing that come into play in the manga always makes me happy.

And of course, those first and last chapters are simply a lot of fun in their own right. Definitely not a volume I think anyone should miss out on. Am I biased? Oh, absolutely. But am I right? Also yes.

(Warning, here be spoilers!)

Cute collection of fun short stories in manga format. I liked the one about Sasami participating in a cooking contest the best and her and the other contestant seemed have some sparks of young love. The ones with Yosho and the one with Fluffy the gigantic cat were great follow-ups.

A couple of crooks steal Tenchi's wallet but Washu deals with them. She has a flying camera following him to find out what he's up to.

An experiment in Washu's lab involving Ryoko goes wrong and Ryoko loses her ability to teleport. Later Ryoko and Tenchi talk about Tenchi's mother. Mihoshi then messes up Washu's lab and one of her creatures gets loose.

It even attacks Tenchi. Ryoko manages to save the day, though.

The next story is about the Ferrous Chef, an obvious takeoff on Iron Chef. Later the television show running the contest wants Sasami to appear. A guy associated with her competition basically asks Sasami to throw the contest. The kid's father is willing to cheat so he wins.

The first part of the contest, washing dishes, Sasami wins. She does well in the second round and goes on to the final cooking contest itself. Another contest tries to cheat by damaging Sasami's knife. Sasami wins and everything turns out well for the boy who was her main competition.

There's a bit of a flashback about Yosho, then the rest of the story section is told from his viewpoint.

A funny section concerns Yume's return and her joining the group in a hot springs. Ryoko this time causes things to go wrong and the group has to confront what appears to be an unstoppable monster.

Which turns out to be a friend of Mihoshi. Really, really cute story.

While there are a bunch of small nice moments in here, the big problem with the manga is that it tends to flatten the complex characters of the OAV series into a shallow sitcom mold. (Of course, both TV series had the same problem.)
