Lanie Jordan writes stories. Sometimes her characters drive her crazy, but then she gets her revenge by making their lives more difficult. Fictional payback is fun.

Picking up right where Breed of Innocence left off, this book is simply fantastic. Very skillfully mixing action, humor, teenage drama, romance, and homework, the author does a marvelous job of adding new layers of depth to an already profound story. Keeping with the creatively riveting scenario presented in the first book, this sequel expands on the personal challenges of several characters, while adding exciting new adventures. If the first book didn't have you on the edge of your seat, this book certainly will!
The characters in this story are all completely addictive, and even more so in this book than in the first. We get to see farther into their personal lives and struggles, as they try to balance high school, and demon-hunting. We also get to see the relationship between Jade and Link grow and adapt, which is truly wonderful, and adds a bit of normalcy to the chaotic world they live in. The community feel of this high school was intriguing to read about, and the friendship between Jade, Link and Tasha reminds me very much of the friendship between the three main characters in the Harry Potter series. Not that it seems copied, they simply have that easy and deep friendship that you know can weather even the toughest storms, which is always a wonderful thing to read about.
This book is just as beautifully written as the first. When done well, I personally love books written in first-person POV, and I must say, the author did a wonderful job with the writing of this book. One thing I did notice though, was how there seemed to be more profanity used than in the first book of The Breed Chronicles. However, the profane words uses were all very mild, and while they were used more frequently, it was done tastefully, and added a very fitting kind of humor to the writing. That humor, mixed with tons of jokes and mystery, made for a wonderful read.
Overall, there isn't anything I disliked about this book. I loved the writing, the plot, the continuation of Jade's story, the humor, adventure, and personal growth each character went through. Jade is a fantastic lead female character, and I couldn't love Linc any more if I tried. This is a fantastic book, and a series that I can't wait to continue reading. Highly recommended, to any YA or paranormal fan.
*I was given an ecopy of this book, from the author, to read in exchange for an honest review.
A Review of Breed of Envy by Lanie Jordan Reviewed by Wennie Conedy 4.5 stars out of 5 Have you ever latched on to a story series that makes you smirk, laugh, worry and sometimes even shed a tear and you just can’t let go? Have you read a book where you drag reading it because you don’t want it to end? Yeah, that’s what the Breed Chronicles is doing to me.
Breed of Envy picks up from where Breed of Innocence leaves off. Phase One of training is done. Phase Two is well underway. Jade and Linc are faced with new challenges. From budding love to demon hunts to demon empathy -- their lives are definitely not boring. Jade identifies the demon that killed Linc’s sister and they join the team to bring it in. They go on a second demon hunt with orders to capture the demon and the hunt takes a turn for the weird when Jade confronts the demon. Add to that the drama that she continues to face at the CGE where her fellow students think she’s weird or dangerous or protected. There’s a lot of drama going on – much like high school. The pressure on Jade is so oppressive that she considers leaving the Center. Will she stay, or will she go?
Book of Envy is consistent with the sarcasm, snark, light hearted moments, teen-age angst and action that made me fall in love with the series. Jade is a heroine that anyone can relate to. Without the benefit of a parental safety net, she struggles with finding herself; she tentatively navigates through a friendship that may slowly develop into something more. She struggles with trust issues. She battles with accepting who she really is. And yet, she is strong, both physically and emotionally and is not afraid to speak and stand up for herself. She realizes her place in the Center, yet she knows that she needs to value herself first, before she can be of value to others.
I really like how the relationship of Jade and Linc is developing. Lanie has created characters that support each other, yet are vulnerable and with some insecurity, yet mature enough to recognize their weaknesses and be there to support each other. Not only has Lanie established a strong romantic relationship, but the friendships she has created warms my heart. I know that high school would have been so much easier to navigate with friends like Linc, Doc and Tasha.
I love this series. I am rooting for Jade’s success and look forward to seeing how she will handle facing the demon that killed her family. If you are looking for a good summer read, or a series that you safely recommend to children below 18, this is the series for you. I look forward to book three, the dangers that Jade and Linc will be facing, in terms of demon hunting and their relationship. And if I am following the pattern correctly, I look forward to reading books three and four of the Breed Chronicles.
I read the first book in this series in January and was quite impressed by it. This book had the same quality of writing, character development, plot, and pacing. I was also pleased that the author reviewed the events of the previous book enough that I could remember what happened. It gave the book a stand-alone attribute that some of the books I’ve read recently have lacked.
In this book Jade Hall is in the second level of her classes to become a demon hunter. Most of her classmates are wary or downright hostile to her. Jade has bigger things to worry about than her petty classmates. Her demon DNA is changing her. Demons have strange reactions to her and people are starting to notice. She has to figure out how it is going to impact her one real desire in life – her future as a demon hunter.
The relationship between Jade and Linc is one of the most natural and healthy relationships I’ve read about in YA. It isn’t forced. It isn’t codependent. It isn’t borderline abusive. They talk, joke, and trust each other. It isn’t just a bunch of brooding about how one might hurt/isn’t good enough/wants to eat/etc the other. The only thing that might be questionable is Jade’s tendency to smack Linc when he is being a dumb guy.
The one complaint I have, and it is a minor quite nitpicky one, is the science. The fact that Jade has demon DNA because of the genetic treatments her parents got is mentioned a lot. The more it was mentioned the more I thought about it. How would that work? How does the expression work? How is it inherited? It was easy to just accept until it started coming up more. Then my very curious brain wanted to know how it worked. I understand why the author didn’t get in to it. A) Non-science nerds might get bored. B) Science nerds might pitch a fit that the facts were wrong. Like I said, minor nitpicky complaint.
Overall this is one of the better indie books I’ve had the pleasure of reading. If you haven’t picked up this series yet you should.
I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
*I received this book free to read and review. Thanks to Lanie Jordan.*
The book was a great continuation of the first book. The characters were, like in the first book, captivating. The secondary characters were not lacking in personality traits, they were distinguished from the others. What I liked most about Jade, was that she wasn't whiny - she could handle her own.
Breed of Envy starts out basically where Breed of Innocence leaves off and I loved the read. As Section Two begins Jade's journey continues with extensive training for fighting demons, as well as fending off new enemies fueled by envy and petty jealousies. I read book one and two consecutively beginning this installment immediately, being hungry for more of Jade's journey and I was not disappointed. Again we have action, intrigue, and continued self discovery that is so well done that I devoured this book, still wanting more. I do feel the series is best read in order, as there is just too much going on that will be missed if you do not know the characters' and organizational structure. The writing is smooth and pleasant to the point where it seemed a substantial read was over in a snap. I definitely recommend this series for upper YA to the young at heart readers who enjoy some kick hinny fun and sweet romance, as well as a heroin you can cheer for on her quest of self discovery and vengeance. I received this book from the author with a request for my honest review without any compensation whatsoever, other than the joy of reading a new book.
Anyone else get confused between Brian and Eric. One problem with reading on Kindle is you cannot go back and thumb through to go over bits to clarify stuff that makes no sense. All through first half she has problems with Brian and then the last half he totally disappears and suddenly Eric is her main male antagonist. ????? Otherwise, it was a good sequel and I am looking forward to the next.
Breed of Envy – Phase 2 – Book 2 **Contains spoilers about Book 1** The second book picks up about two months after the end of Book One. Jade has discovered that both her parents not only worked for CGE, they also received the genetic treatments to mix various types of demon DNA with their own DNA. Jade is one of the first known cases of a child born from two such genetically-altered parents. So Jade has a variety of demon DNA in her own genetic makeup. During the last phase, Jade had been bitten by a vampire. Her demon DNA probably saved her life. Jade was the first human ever to survive a vampire bite. At the beginning of this phase, Director Greene breaks his normal protocol and speaks with the various training levels together, telling them about the new influx of funding he’s acquired. Jade was not at all relieved to discover the majority of the funds were secured to study her and her DNA and its ability to resist that vampire bite. Jade’s friendships deepen in this second book, and her relationship with Linc also deepens and becomes something more serious. Lanie Jordan is an excellent author; sometimes the book has an almost Harry Potter-ish feel to it, at least Book One does, for brief instances, as the descriptions of the students, cliques, and classes are discussed. This is not a bad thing, it is done in an almost teasing manner, lending a comforting feel to the school. The characters are very well developed, most being multi-faceted. Jade can be an emotional rollercoaster, the kind of person who can be fun and loyal, but also tiring if her moods start swinging. Linc is strong, thoughtful, and an almost perfect friend. Felecia is the most conniving, lowlife enemy one could ever hope to read about. Jordan portrays these people so well through their interactions, they live and breathe; they become beings the reader can care about or love to care nothing about, as the case may be. The demons are even well developed. They are so vividly and realistically depicted, the reader might expect to find one in their own warehouse district late at night. Thus, the world Jordan has created sparkles with life. It is frightening in its possibilities. The plot lines remain consistent, while also allowing room for growth (you’ll know what I mean when you read them) across both books. The plot is strong enough to be engrossing and compelling enough to keep readers turning pages. The action is non-stop. There were a few reading “speed bumps” when words were misused (weary for wary, for instance), but such instances were rare and were probably corrected prior to final printing. There are very few series I will take the time to actively seek out and follow. This is one of them. I thoroughly enjoyed the Breed Chronicles. I received a free ARC through LoP via Goodreads in exchange for an honest review.
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. I loved reading the first book and thought this book would be just as good. Unfortunately I didn't feel the same, though I did still enjoy reading it and seeing where the characters and story would progress to.
The story begins with the main character Jade, starting Phase 2 of the CGE (Consortium of Genetic Engineering) program. The CGE is academy-based and students learn about demons and how to survive and defeat them. As with the first book, Jade manages to get in life threatening situations that tests her learning and understanding. She has proven to be a valuable asset to the CGE organisation through her intellectual talent and her new found ability to survive a vampire bite (the only known person who has). As a result Jade is expected to act as a pin cushion so the CGE can examine her since they believe she holds the key to cure vampire bites. The technological aspect of the story was very interesting and how the CGE incorporates it into all the different research areas they have available.
The characters are easy to like or hate as the case may be. The main characters are Jade and her best friends Linc and Tasha. They stand up for their beliefs and have strong values when it comes to learning and fighting, both with and against each other. Jade is determined to do what she thinks is right and will not give up on her goal of finding the demon who killed her family. The main antagonist in this story is Rachel, who was previously in Felicia's group prior to her being kicked out of the CGE, and has fit into her new role effortlessly.
This is a story with characters that are learning and helping each other to develop their skills in a world full demons and crazy adventures. While reading, I found myself waiting for the drama that I predicted would happen with various characters in the story but did not occur. I look forward to reading the next phase in demon hunting and seeing if my predictions take place in the next book.
This book is the sequel of Breed of Innocence and it is as good as the first one or maybe even better! Breed of Envy picks up from where Breed of Innocence leaves off allowing Jade and Linc to face new challenges. From budding love to demon hunts to demon empathy -- their lives are definitely not boring. The two embark upon demon hunts which results in some interesting experiences an revelations. There’s a lot of drama going on – much like high school, that is very relatable. The pressure on Jade is so oppressive that she considers leaving the Center.
I loved how the author let us have insight into the personal aspects of the characters and experience their lives more in-depth. The main character/ heroine Jade keeps her guard up and doesn't get all weak and dependable on Linc with whom she shares a confusing romantic relationship. Jade is a heroine that anyone can relate to and in this sequel she discovers her true identity and heritage. Without the benefit of a parental structure, Jade struggles with the basic teenage issues such as identity, relationships, and trust. And yet, she is strong, both physically and emotionally and is not afraid to speak and stand up for herself.
We also get to know Linc better in this novel and really get to see the characters being to support each other, yet are vulnerable and with some insecurity, yet mature enough to recognize their weaknesses. This book is consistent with the basic high school sarcasm and drama that is really believable and made this series very easy to read.
All in all a very thrilling and captivating read, the suspense of which will make you chomp on your lower lip in anticipation and fear and you’ll keep on turning the pages till you finish it. I furthermore enjoyed how author Lanie Jordan really expressed the ups and downs of relationships, dealing with issues and drama that most teenagers can relate to.
This is definitely a book i would recommend to my teenage nieces. I received a free ARC through LoP via Goodreads in exchange for an honest review.
{my thoughts} – This book was absolutely amazing. It picked up right where Breed of Innocence had left off. This book starts at the beginning of phase 2 in the program and Jade appears to be past the worst part of all the issues she had dealt with in phase 1. What I mean by that is that she no longer has to deal with Felecia making her life miserable since she’d managed to get herself kicked out of the program. However, this book leads to new struggles that Jade is forced to endure. The only good thing Jade has going for her is that Linc and Tasha will stand beside her no matter what and stand up for her.
This book begins with Director Green coming back from being gone all summer and he has funding now that will help with research and assist the Prospects in their studies to become better Demon Hunters. The funding Jade finds out is in a huge part due to her and that fact that she’d survived a vampire bite during the end of her first phase.
Jade is an interesting character because she loves to study and can’t seem to get enough of it. Many of the other prospects seem to think that she is special and or a teachers pet but they don’t have all the facts. Since Jade was in a part a bit of the reason that Felecia had been kicked out she seemed to have a target on her back by Felecia old posse. Rachel in particular seemed to have picked up with Felecia had left off and decided since Jade got her friend kicked out that it was her mission to make Jade’s life miserable.
Jade learns a lot about herself, her family, who she can and cannot trust and most importantly about what she wants to gain by leaning from the CGE. This book is a remarkable recollection of her journey through phase two of the program. It made me laugh, it made me smile and tear up in a few places. If you’d like to know what happens to Jade you will need to read the book. I promise you won’t regret it!
I am really enjoying this series. Although it is not a fast-moving, page-by-page action packed book, it is still an absolutely great book to add to your shelves. I actually liked the fact that the author took her time with her characters to make them realistic and that the storyline moves along at a human pace. ;-)
The author's characters are so well-created. I love Jade's character. She has me cracking up (a lot). Her inner voice (which tends to be not-so-inner) is so filled with sarcasm that I can't help but love it. Jade mirrors a real teen - she is no where near perfect. She has major attitude, insecurities, inner strength, and a desire to want what's right in the world. I also love Linc's character. He, too, is perfectly flawed. It's nice to read about a relationship that isn't all swoony eyes and save-the-damsel. They fight, they avoid each other, they have issues with expressing themselves, and yet they are there for one another, stand up for each other, and care deeply for each other. I also love that sex or sexual feelings have not been focused on in this series. It makes this series a good, wholesome type of book for the teen who isn't really focusing on that in their life. I also enjoy Tasha for her steadfast friendship and Rachel for her great depiction of a bully. I'm dying to learn the story behind Bryan's hatred (because there just HAS to be more to it than what we've been given so far). ;-)
There are a few action scenes, but this book is mostly about Jade coming to terms with who/what she is. Most book 2s in a series drag, but this one was really enjoyable. Jade is dealing with some serious DNA-issues, and it's a lot to digest and sort through. I love how the author slowly revealed some of the "side-effects" of Jade's DNA. I can't wait to see how she continues to evolve and where it will take her.
I got this book from the author, free of cost, in exchange of an honest review from my side!
Firstly I would like to thank Lanie Jordan, the author of Breed of Envy, for this fantastic opportunity that she presented me with by allowing me to review her work.
This book is the sequel of Breed of Innocence and it is as good as the first one or maybe even better!
I loved how the author let us have a good view and experience the life of the characters way more deeply than in the first book. The main character/ heroine Jade keeps her guard up and doesn't get all weak and dependable on Linc with whom she shares a confusing romantic relationship. We get to know Linc better in this sequel and many other demon hunters pop up now and then but the author managed to keep a fast pace yet describe each scene, the background and the characters vividly.
In this sequel Jade discovers her true identity and heritage and becomes aware of the demon DNA present in her system, she survives the vampire attack but how she did that is still a mystery and to know the truth she had to undergo DNA tests.
All in all a very thrilling and captivating read, the suspense of which will make you chomp on your lower lip in anticipation and fear and you’ll keep on turning the pages till you finish it. So, grab your copy as soon as you can and enjoy this great story while I anxiously keep waiting for the next book in this series!
I have read the first book of this series and just to keep going.. I want to thank the author Lanie Jordan for giving me a copy of book 1 & 2 for my honest review. I was so excited when book 2 continued from book 1. It was more exciting and more action and unexpected parts of the story and some you already could see forming. And some you would not of seen coming. Lanie Jordan has a creative mind when she gets going into her characters she brings to life, and not so human ones as well. I read this book in a day where book 1 I read it in a few days. But I was not disappointed at all. This had my mind going to what will happen next. It is just right for those teens who about 15-16yr old with issues of bullying. I have read a hidden or on purpose message to teens. Not to bully others because they are different. Be the perfect and yet better person then the one who bullies you. I am so looking forward to read book 3. I am dying to know what will happen now that Jade is on Phase 3 and Mr.Greene has given her some freedom but not too much. I wonder if the romance with Linc will continue? will it become stronger? Will Jade ever find the demon that killed her mother and brother. Lanie has a talent to give other YA authors a run for their money or in this case book sales. I have recommend this to few friends and family member. Once you read both book you will be doing the same and will be looking out for book 3 like I am , as well as many others.. 5-stars.........
"Breed of Envy" is a well written, second addition to Lanie Jordan's Breed Series. There is never a dull moment and the supernatural becomes all too normal for the Prospects of the CGE.
Jade is undergoing many changes in her second Phase. Physically, she has enhanced sight, her hearing is exceptional, and her stamina, strength, and speed are off the charts. Emotionally, she is more confused than ever before. Who is she? WHAT is she? And what does it mean for her future as a Hunter?
Jade will undergo many tests in this Phase, and not all of them the academic kind. She is having her shifting DNA tested and studies by the scientists (always fun), and what they have to tell her is anything but what she desperately wants to hear. She's trying her best to accept what she is, and if the tests could procure a possible cure for Vampirism then she'll endure them, but all she wants is to be a normal girl, or at least as normal a girl who hunts demons for a living can be. But she may find that wishes are rarely anything but just that. Wishes.
I enjoyed this second book to the Breed series. Lanie kept her readers on her toes, throwing one challenge, one obstacle, one surprise after another. There was rarely a quiet moment, and even that is pushing the boundaries. But then again, who cares for quiet moments? Where is the fun in that? I can't wait to start the third book, Breed of Havoc. It sounds to be just that for our favorite characters.
First I would like to thank Lanie Jordan for giving me a copy of this book for an honest review. The book is apply named Breed of Envy, since their are several instances in this book, where people are envious and treating Jade badly because of it. Jade now knows she has demon dna, which explains alot, and she is still finding out things about herself along the way. She gets closer with her best friend Linc, slowly develops into boyfriend/girlfriend mode. Which is nice they didn't just jump into that kind of relationship, it developed. Her other best friend is Tasha and is good for her since she is opinionated and keeps her on her toes. She has a new cheerleader type enemy who hates her for no reason. Rumors start to fly and most the kids at CGE start acting rediculous towards Jade based on the rumors and Director Greene finally sets the record straight with what happened to Jade with the vampire demon. It helps with some of the teenagers but not all, typical life stuff, you have your people who are oh ok, and the other that just want to keep picking at stuff that don't matter anyway. There were a few errors, spelling etc, that need edited. But over all the story was great. I can't wait to find out what happens to Jade in phase 3, but I will have to. Great job Lanie, keep it up, look forward to the next book in the series.
This picks up more or less where Book 1 left off, and does not shy away from exploring the consequences of earlier events.
Jade, although just as smart, strong, and sassy as before, goes through perhaps even more emotional ups and downs here. I'm especially fond of the parts where she spazzes out and where she's unsure of her real feelings about various people or things (her blossoming relationship with Linc, her "part demon" genetics). Jade was already believable, but perhaps these parts make her even more relatable.
We got to see a lot more of Tasha, which I appreciated, and a lot more of other characters like Doc and Peter. Other characters were added, too, though the fact that so many of them were antagonistic was slightly formulaic, like "Rachel the Mean Girl" who basically just took over Felecia's role from Book 1. To be fair, I think the author might be headed somewhere different with this...
The series' near-future, near-realistic dystopia certainly remains more sci-fi than fantasy, as the demons these folks fight seem to be the product of evolution-, genetics-, and/or science-gone-awry than anything else. This installment raises a lot more moral and ethical questions than the first about whether all demons are automatically bad or require hunting. I say bring on the shades of gray.
Breed of Envy picks up right where Breed of Innocence left off. Jade has survived her first Phase of Demon Hunting School. Not without almost dying twice and some not so friendly help from a girl named Felecia - who got Jade into both messes. Luckily, Jade survives and comes out a little stonger. As Phase 2 starts she's a little closer to Tasha and a lot closer to Linc in this book. Everyone still talks about her - well, because she's still got a lot going on. She volunteers for some extra work and stumbles across something Linc has been looking for. Relationships are tested, turned around and put back together. Jade still has everyone talking about her and another girl, Rachel, out to get her. Why? Jade doesn't know, and tries not to let it bother her. Jade got to know Director Greene, Doc, and Peter a little bit better also.
This book just flew by when I was reading it. I had so much fun and went through Jade's angst and anger right along side her. At times I wished I could jump in the book to give someone a piece of my mind! Another excellent read from Lanie Jordan. I didn't want to put this down. I also didn't want it to end. The characters are funny, mean, sweet, likeable, and tough - just like real life. I really can't wait for the third installment in this series, I know it won't disappoint.
I received a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
This series MUST be read in order. Please read Breed Of Innocence first :)
This is one of the best sequels I have ever read. Some time passes between the books but its belivable that nothing of import happened during the time away. The main characters become even more likeable in this book if that is even possible. Action and adventure abound with a touch of scifi in the amazing technology they use on a daily basis.
I really wish the "toys" they use for their traing and hunts existed here! I think they would be loads of fun to play with :) Also I really enjoy the genetic experimentation angle of the series. Too many stories with genetic experimentation only focus on the positives or negatives of the science but here you see all sides of expeimentation including unforseen "impossible" mutations. The idea that this horrible "plague of demons" could benefit mankind by curing cancer and otherwise advancing science in such a spectacular fashion is awe inspiring. The storyline is fast paced and engaging. It makes you think but in a totally fun way. Convoluted with conspiracies and mysteries this is on of the best coming of age series I have ever had th pleasure of reading! I can not wait to find out what happens next :)
** this series is suitable for young adult through adult readers
this series is so good. I love Jade so much, and Linc, although he annoyed me some in this second book. their interactions are so real. and believe me when I tell you I am so happy that they don't have that insta love going on. their relationship progressed so smoothly and beautifully. the book sure made up for the title, it was perfect. people are so petty sometimes. there is so much that the human race is capable of, and I do mean it in the bad way, that maybe there are better demons out there. I hope that in the future Jade will defend herself more and I also want to say that I loved how she responded to Shelley's stupidness (I know that's not a word, but it's so suited) the next book can't come fast enough for me and because I love your writing so much I think I'll read more from you, after all Shadow and Light was so good also if you happen to read this I would love for you to write something from Linc's POV, because I have the feeling sometimes that he has some side of himself guarded :) Oh, and I have to say that I am so intrigued by Brian, what's his deal anyway? I want to know more about his story
**received the book free from the Lovers of Paranormal group for an honest review
This book did not disappoint :) I loved this one even more and enjoyed every moment of reading it :) Lanie’s sense of humor had me smirking, smiling, and laughing. I totally love Jade, Linc, and Tasha!! I even see some of the mean spiritedness in the high school I work in, so it makes it easier to connect because everyone knows high school drama is not easy to deal with. This was another emotional rollercoaster going along on Jade’s P2 journey. As the characters interact with Jade, you either love them or wish you could slap them for Jade. There is new drama and lots of it, new bullies, new demons, mysteries, new exams, battles, and such much more.
This is a must read series!! I recommend to all paranormal lovers :) I loved it soo much I bought them for myself, and I’m going to buy a set for my classroom library too so I can share with my responsible students!
Lanie Jordan is on my favorite author list :) And as The Book Tart has said, hurry up with Book 3 ;) I want to see what trouble Jade attracts next!! Lanie, you rock :)
Dear Lanie, It is me again with another review/weird fan letter. I am currently writing this while waiting in an airport lounge, and my phone does not speak English very well (currently living in Tokyo) so I apologize for any typos. I, unfortunately can not blame them on my cats like you. Anyway, just finished reading Breed of Envy while waiting for my plane... yeah, pretty much still in love with you. Could not stop reading and loved just about everything this book had to offer. Only a little disappointed with the Jade/Brian problem, which I thought would end more... dramatically? Or at least with some kind of love confession? So maybe that is yet to come in the next book? You bet your sweet patootie I will be starting on that book as soon as I finish this. well, maybe after I facebook stalk you for a little while. Anyway, love this series, love Jade, love Linc, love Tasha, and everything else! Cant say enough good things. I also cant find the apostrophe on this keyboard... arg! Anyway, keep up the great writing and I will keep reading and leaving crazy reviews. Your Loyal Fan A. Lynn Powers
This book was: just as great as the first one... if not more so.
The plot: (pardon me saying so, but The plot) thickens. Everything just seems to war with it-selves and others, while at the same time everything just seems to be the same as always. It's okay if that doesn't make sense, because it barely does to me either, and it's me who wrote it!
The beginning was: good. The middle was: great. The crescendo was: really good. The finish/ending was: confusing, yet so very, very intriguing that I continued with the third book just minutes after finishing this one.
The language was: so much better in this book than that of any other book I've read in a long time (excluding the first book in this series, which had very good language too). I'm very happy about this because it means I've learned a few new fancy words and/or expressions that I previously didn't know or hadn't heard before.
Would I recommend this book? Yes/no? Why/why not? Yes, without a doubt. However, depending on whom I'm 'supposedly' recommending a book to, I might choose a different book that better suits him/her.
What a great follow-up book and it did not disappoint. Jade is learning to adjust to her new environment and she is trying to deal with the notoriety of being different. She is definitely an overachiever but reading about where she came from, it must have been in her genes all along. The tenative relationship between Jade and Linc is kind of sweet with all the teenage angst of young love. Jade's sheer determination and persistence to prove that she belonged is endearing. The information on the different types of demons is informative without being overwhelming as I sometimes lose interest if there is too much thrown at you and it then detracts from the main story. There is plenty of action to keep you interested and though I sometimes felt that Jade was a bit too soft at times when dealing with the snarky evil cheerleader types, she got it together in the end. Tasha and Linc are great best friends and even Director Greene surprised me at times so overall I would recommend this new series if you enjoy a touch or romance and plenty of action scenes.
I was given this book along with the first book, Breed of Innocence, in exchange for honest review (LoP). Let me just say that I did NOT want to put either of them down!
The main character, Jade, is amazingly real. She has real issues that could translate into the real world, then there's the twist. Jade is different, and apparently wasn't expecting to be as different as she is. Jade is definite a multidimensional character that we keep finding more and more about. She opens up to Director Greene, Doc and Linc. It takes her a while to open up to any of them, but she eventually does.
The world of demons is "realistically" integrated into the storyline. There are surprises, but we are, for the most part, eased into them. Jade proves to be a force to be reckoned with over and over.
OK - I know I'm rambling, but I loved, loved, LOVED this book! If you like paranormal fiction, READ IT! Do not pass go, do not collect $200, READ IT!
Things aren't getting any easier for Jade. She thought surviving a vampire attack was bad last year but high school is still high school even if it's high school for demon hunters. This book starts off a few months after book one ends. It's the start of a new Phase and although Jade thought last year was tough this year has its own set of problems. Like having Brian as a partner in combat training, seriously whats with that guy. Or the new DNA testing Dr. Asshat as ordered to dissect the mysteries of Jade vamp attack survival. This book moves at a bit of a slower pace then book one, but I liked how we got to know the character better. Jade starts really coming into her own, she's making hard choices and coming to grip with her heritage. I feel like we get to know Linc better as well. We also see more of the Demon Hunter's too and want there jobs/lives are like. I thought this book was a great continuation of book one and can't wait for book three to come out.
I didn't think this series could get any better but the second book is even more absorbing than the first! Not only is Jade kicking major demon butt, but her and Linc are getting closer. Lots of action AND romance? Right up my alley!!!
Jade has identified the demon that killed her family and is on a mission to find it, once and for all. Linc, her best friend and constant companion, wants to help her but also wants her to be safe. The chemistry between them is wonderful, and so is all the snarkiness and humor!
This is a really fun series! It has lots of action, paranormal creatures, mystery and romance! I was pulled into it immediately and my only regret is that the third book hasn't been released yet. I want to know what happens next.... NOW!!!
Check this series out. If you love YA paranormal romance/action, you'll love it!
**Book offered by Author for the Read to Review (R2R)**
As the first one, I gave this 3 stars also. Jade.. one just has to like. She has a personality that grows on you. Her characters grows with the story, smiles. With the training completed.Jade and her friend moves on to a new life. The Demons meshed well within the storyline for the most part. Emotions run as most young adult themed books. Which again I dont usually read. The sarcasm is evident along with other emotions drama is always in the forfront. Jade has a nice group of friends Doc along with tasha and how sexy is Jade and linc together? Will they fill out more in the next book? We shall see. Will Jade leave the compound because of the drama? Will her friends follow. Whats in store for Jade and lil band of misfits. Enjoy it was fun for a YA read
I received this book in exchange for an honest review (Lovers of Paranormal)
Warning: These books contain kick-ass demon-hunters in training, vampires and demons (not the cuddly, marrying kind), and sarcastic (and sometimes snarky) attitudes. No humans were eaten during the writing of these books. Bites and minor injuries don't count...right?
Loved this book and maybe even more then the first one! Jade, the man character is this kick ass demon hunter, well in training, that came from a rough past. She just finished phase 1 and started phase 2 in her training. She has this awesome sarcastic attitude that I just love, makes it more relatable. In this book Jade comes to terms with who she is.
From start to finish this book had me hooked. This is a most read and breath of fresh air. Can’t wait for the next one
I am an urban fantasy fan and when I stumbled across Lanie Jordan a few months ago I devoured Breed of Innocence and have been eagerly awaiting this sequel. It delivered! I adore the heroine Jade and her snarky strength. I love the journey she is on and the character development in this story and that along with the fascinating world building made this book even better than the first one for me.
I would say for ages 14-101 :P there's some violence and mild mild sensuality.
I'm so ashamed of myself for forgetting to get my review in! A lot of YA books feel a little too cutesy for me, but this one layered a subtle sophistication to it that I really enjoyed. Our main character was dynamic and fully fleshed out, and although there were sections where I felt like I might be drifting away, I was suddenly yanked right back into the story. Lanie Jordan's world, and the demons and vampires within, are awfully cool and I can really appreciate the fluidity of the dialogue. Characters seemed like they actually spoke like real people. Overall- I have no excuses for not writing this sooner- this book deserved it!
