Anna Sewell was an English novelist who wrote the 1877 novel Black Beauty, her only published work. It is considered one of the top ten best-selling novels for children, although the author intended it for adults. Sewell died only five months after the publication of Black Beauty, but long enough to see her only novel become a success.
I never knew I could enjoy reading a book on a horse, or animals! After all, I am an African woman, and it is no secret that we generally hardly care about animals, (which is different from mistreating them). But this book is so powerfully and convincingly written that I even began to wonder whether the horse(s) actually wrote this book!? I guess I am lucky to have read this book as an adult now with my own kids; if I had read this as a youngster I am sure I’d have sworn the animals were telling us about their own lives, and perspective. The author has a great deal of love and empathy for horses. I understand she never had any children of her own at the time. But what a book she has left for posterity.
Bought this for a granddaughter who is 6 and in to horses as her family has some and ride. I was hoping this edition geared towards younger children would be phrased in a more easy-to-understand format than the original. It is modified somewhat but still more appropriate for an older child.
My Cami is also a book lover but this is still beyond her reading skills at this point but not too far in the future. It is a classic I wanted her to have in her personal library and I’m sure as the years go by it will be one she treasures.
I listened to the audio "Black Beauty Young Folks' edition" 9781518925535.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the story of Black Beauty and have ever since I read it as a kid. I also had an audio version on cassette tape, but I have no idea of the narrator (I recall he was very good).
This version is not good. BB is SO good, it should never be abridged!! Key scenes are entirely missing! The multiple narrators are also marks against this version. One of the male voices is ok, but others are NOT AT ALL! The narrator changed randomly (sometimes a narrator would just read one chapter and other times they'd read several in a row. At the end of every chapter, they'd say "end of chapter x. read by x at x[location]". It was very disruptive.
DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT read or listen to this version. Appreciate the original.
I loved this as a child and then have equally enjoyed it reading to my own children - such a beautiful book, you’ll never look at horses the same after reading this
Audiobook, not the best reading, but it was a free Librivox recording so can’t complain. The young folks’ edition skips over or tones down the scary parts, which was nice for my 4-year-old.
This book is a reminder to us all that we should be kind to animals and treat them with respect. Black Beauty was a spirited horse but at times he was treated so poorly that it cut his life short.
I rated this book lower as I wouldn't really call this timeless; The author wrote this book as she had quite a strong passion for horses and hated seeing them treated badly; she used it as an example of how to better care of them and act around them.
Unfortunately I don't get to ride horses or see them up close very often so this book did get boring. Black Beauty was sold so many times and sadly the chapters ended up the same depending on whether he was sold to a bad man or a good man.
I don't regret reading it as I did love horses as a kid and it makes me want to go learn about them in greater depth up close.
Onwards and upwards for 2020, I'm currently ahead of schedule #30books
Charming book from a horse's point of view. I enjoyed it a lot, but I also really like horses. All the characters are so open and earnest about what's on their mind, which might bother some people as it's not overly "believable" but I thought it was sweet and enjoyed reading about so many people who thought so kindly of horses. It's a very earnest book.
It actually made me like the movie adaptation a bit less. I prefer Ginger as a world-weary older mare with no romance between her and the younger, naive and hopeful Black Beauty. I also like that all the horses get lines instead of Black Beauty just telling us what they're thinking.
I really enjoyed the theme of ignorance being just as awful, if not worse, than wickedness. Because it really is true, especially when it comes to animals.
The book black beauty is written by Anna Sewell in the middle of the 19 century, it is about a black horse get treated differently by different masters. At the beginning, the black horse was grow and sold to different wealthy owners. But after the Black Beauty is getting hurt and he is becoming weak, his prize cheap and gets bad treatment by different masters. At last, the black beauty is tired and old, finally, a owner bought him and he was the first owner of the black beauty.
Every single person should read this book. I learned so much about horses, and much about people as well. The lessons taught between these pages are priceless. I did myself a favor and so will everyone else who opens it.
Also I appreciated the easy length of each chapter, they were no chore to read.
I don't like to read books or watch movies based on animal torture. I am very sensitive towards animals. Thus, reading this was an insight into a horses life, but it was also depressing. It is nicely written and will work for people who are numb to animal torture.
