Life as a college senior is stressful enough. Between mid-terms, stupid boys, and a rare blood condition, Eliza Landry is just trying to figure out what normal is—whatever that means—when she discovers that vampires aren’t just a thing of legend.
In a matter of moments, her life changes forever when she and her older sister Kate suffer a vampire attack which leaves Eliza with two puncture wounds on her neck and an allergy to sunlight. But she’s still human, or at least she thinks she is. It doesn’t really matter—her main concern is that her sister is missing.
Sorrow turns to obsession, leading Eliza to piece together the puzzle of that terrifying night. Even stumbling upon a millennia-old vampire assassin named Luke Conrad who either wants to kill her or kiss her (she can't decide) cannot deter her.
When bodies start piling up and one of them is supposedly Kate, Eliza and Luke set out to discover who is behind the attacks. Soon, Eliza is drawn into the dark and dangerous world of the undead, with no guarantee she’ll make it out alive, and no doubt that she won’t like what she finds.
As a child, JC was fascinated by things that went bump in the night. As they say, some things never change. Now, as an adult, she divides her time between the sexy law men, mythical creatures, bad-ass bikers, and kick-ass heroines that live inside her head and her Netflix addiction. JC is a San Francisco Bay Area native, but has also called both Texas and Louisiana home. These days she rocks her flip flops year-round in Northern California and can't imagine a climate more beautiful. Her dream is to own her own Harley and she feels compelled to tell you that she is Team Peeta all the way.
JC is the author of the Men with Badges series, The Birthright Series, and the Bayonet Scars series.
Okay I don't even know where to begin! First off let me say is that not a BEAUTIFUL cover! I love it! Emery has done an excellant job here with Anomaly! I went into this story under the misconception that here lies another vampire story, and well... in essence it was but JC takes it a bit farther and kind of mixes up alot of what we have preconceived as vampires up to this point and this is what made it stand out for me! Which brings me to one of my favorite quotes from the story.
"“I didn’t invite you in!” “Don’t believe everything you hear, Nancy Drew,” he said."
This one quote just rocked me to the core because it is one major piece of vampire lore that I have held onto all these years is that a vampire can't come in uninvited. I loved it! I laughed til I cried especially when Luke calls Eliza Nancy Drew because she thinks she knows everything about vampires.
I look very forward to the next part of the story!
Who Loves New Orleans, LA? THIS GIRL. Before I picked up this book for a review read (Thanks JC!), I had no idea about the setting, the scenery, or anything else. All I knew was that ANOMALY was a book about a 20-something-year-old girl in college, who suddenly finds herself with a sucky life (literally). I was pleasantly surprised when the imagery that JC Emery penned turned out to make me feel like I was back in the boot. (That’s what we Louisianans call the great state of Louisiana.) I felt like I was back in college walking uptown, passing through the streets that housed Loyola and Tulane University. Oh, and let’s not forget the abita beer mention. (I died.) So okay, you just want to know if you should read it, right? Okay. YES. You should read it. While there are some editing issues especially towards the back in my edition, they are easily overlooked since this book is so well written. There are times when you feel like you’re Eliza Landry. You’re confused about what you’re turning into, and you have no one to trust but this super hot vampire who is kind of a dick. So now you’re thinking “God. Another one of those. Girl Meets Vampire, falls in love with said Vampire, the end.” Wrong. I’m not one to spill spoilers in my reviews, so I’ll say this: It doesn’t end how you want it to. It leaves you wanting to scream at Luke, at Eliza, and at Kate. Most of all, it leaves you with questions, and let’s face the facts here: As a reader invested in a story, I don’t want questions!! I want Answers!! NOW! But, as a writer, It was a smooth move by JC Emery, because I’ll be picking up the next installation of the Birthright Series to find out what happens next. Happy Reading Fledglings! Some of my favorite quotes from ANOMALY: “It would figure that I meet my first vampire and he’s likely an unbalanced bipolar” “I didn’t invite you in!” … “Don’t believe everything you hear, Nancy Drew.” “‘I’ve never buried anything I didn’t personally kill before,’ he said. I froze where I was and stared up at him, figuring out how to respond to that little tidbit. He cleared his throat and rubbed the back of his neck. ‘I meant to say you’re welcome.’ “ “Can you hear me? I asked silently. Luke didn’t even react, not even a twitch of the lips. Tool, I thought. Still he gave no response.” “’A lifelong private school brat and still, you insist on making up words,’ he said and picked up a picture frame upon my dresser. ‘Texted is a word.’ … ‘It most certainly is not,’ Luke said. Clearly he was not up to date on the ever changing English language.” “’That was fast,’ I said in astonishment. His lips quirked up impossibly farther, and he winked at me. ‘It’s been centuries since I’ve heard a female accuse me of such.’’ “And just like the city itself, born and bred New Orleanians were constants, never changing, predictably unpredictable creatures of habit and tradition” (SO TRUE) “I scrolled through twice before finding it under ‘Butthead.’ It was immature, sure, but it did make me smile.” “It just didn’t feel like something you left on a recorded message – ‘Hey Luke, it’s me, Liz. I’m worried that my supposed-to-be-dead sister is going to slaughter her stupid, elitist boyfriend. I’m thinking she’s calling off their relationship. So, um, yeah. Worried for his life. Thanks Vampire Bestie!’ No, that certainly wouldn’t work.” “Her body language gave off major vibes that said she would console him in private if he so much as gave her a hint that he would like that.” “It wasn’t fair, really, but that’s how feelings worked. They weren’t always fair, and they didn’t always make sense, but they were what they were.´(TRUE) “I wanted to ask him if he was bipolar, or just a dick.” And, my favorite: “I should have known better than to date him – He was an Alabama fan.” HAHAHA. (Geaux Tigers.) ----4.5/5 Stars because I want the rest of the story, and it had some minor editing issues.
(It was a great, fresh read. I really didn’t expect it to be this good, too bad the ending wasn’t as strong as the rest.)
I can’t ask for a better thing, a better feeling, than the one that consumes my soul whenever a book turns out to be a massive surprise. I’m still not quite sure what was it that I was expecting from this story, but no doubt in my mind that this wasn’t it. Anomaly is such a refreshing read in the vampire themed story that I continue to be astonished by it. Everything about it is odd and different and invigorating, and I find that to be extremely important when vamps are the creatures being portrayed. I’ve read so many variations of this genre before, with girls being turned and then falling in love with their masters, that I’m always looking for the next big thing, the next great novelty, the next risky fresh, creative vibe. JC Emery definitely pulled this one off successfully.
Eliza is the essence of this book but, for me, Kate was the one that constantly made me wonder and question her sanity, and that kept me on edge due to her unexpected growth and transformation throughout the story. She used to have this sweet and caring side, this charisma that would easily lighten up an entire room, but then everything was destroyed and all that was left was this bitter, mean person of hers. Her sister, on the other hand and because it is her perspective the one given to readers, sends out this strong sense of familiarity and closeness that’s from utter importance. In the beginning, she’s this fragile young woman who has been affected by an illness all of her life, but once she’s attacked and Kate disappears, something in her changes and she ends up becoming this kick-ass heroin that no one expects her to be.
I really did enjoy the way Emery built her story, although there were a couple of things more towards the end that didn’t completely convince me. I believe it was positively clever of her to show that the thing that matters the most is finding Kate, so that the vampire aspect of the story comes out in second plan. I felt much more attached to the story and to Eliza’s fears and despairs because of this choice than I would have ever had if Emery had decided to put all the importance and attention in Eliza’s transformation into some kind of weird and unknown creature. Too bad Luke wasn’t much of a supporting character. I can’t say I didn’t like him ‘cause I did, and he sure had his moments but I don’t think he was giving the care he deserved and, due to that, he wasn’t able to really fulfil the steps of mysterious love interest.
There were times, so many, many times, when I wanted to give this book a complete 5 stars… but as soon as the ending was coming clearer and nearer things just stopped happening with the same intensity has they had been happening. The pace slowed down, the majority of the questions kept unanswered and the way the book ended was way too weird. I wanted to know more about The Legion and The Guard, I wanted to try and understand what was it that really happen to Kate and the reason that made her act the way she did, but nothing was given to me and because of that I felt a bit numb and totally confused. I hope, with all my strengths, that the next book in the series brings some answers ‘cause I really want them now! Can’t stand this curiosity for much longer...
I'm trying something new with my book tours and blasts reviews: keeping those short, with more in depth reviews later on or here on goodreads. Why? Well with these tours and blasts I'm doing, there's a lot of information included! Plot synopsis, author bios, author interviews/character interviews, or guest posts, etc. Soooo I'll try to split a few up and see how it goes. If I get negative comments from my book tour organizers, I'll know to keep it all together in one place!
So from my upcoming participation in a tour: "I liked how this book just jumped right in and started up right away, but that also created some issues for me as I felt like I was missing out on a whole bunch of history that I should know! I admired Kate as Eliza's sister; always looking out for her even if it seems a bit smothering. I found Luke intriguing even as I was a bit confused; I had doubted he was a vampire himself thinking he was just a vampire hunter! The stirrings of romance and lust between Eliza and Luke made me grin. I cannot wait for the rest of the series to follow through with the story as we're left on a cliff hanger and I have a lot of unanswered questions!!!"
And now for the meatier review:
This felt like a novella - short, not full explanations or details, springboard lust for hot vampire dude, etc. I thought Luke was just a hunter at first and not a vampire himself; when we learn more about him, it's still just a teaser! And he lives with some super hot chick vampire, but there are NO details as to their relationship. Just that it is. And man, she is one catty female staking her claim.
I liked watching Eliza's development go from prissy little wallflower to having some gumption in certain scenes, but it doesn't last. The crying jags get annoying. I realize that this is traumatic for you, but holy schnikes. Straighten that spine! I really want to like you, Eliza, but you're making it difficult!
Spoiler alert!
Eliza grows on you as a character. You like her, you dislike her, you question why she doesn't know, etc. So many secrets need to be explained!
Eliza Landry has always been the sick girl unable to take care of herself. From a young age an illness have claimed her and transformed her life to "poor Eliza". Her older sister Kate has been responsible to ensure her safety and health. But that is about to change.
Walking home one night from a party both their lives was about to change from bad to real ugly. Eliza and her sister are attacked by ruthless vampires and Eliza ends up between human and vampire. An anomaly. But Kate is nowhere to be found.
Eliza ventures back to the scene of the attack to try and track down her sister; instead what she finds is a vampire. Luke Conrad was about to reveal a world she didn't want to know existed, but quickly needed to get a grip on.
With Luke's help they start searching with dead bodies found around New Orleans looking for her sister. But when she does find her sister Eliza discover that her new world was deadly and surviving it would mean she embraces her new life and fight back.
Eliza's character starts out where most does. Uncertain and scared she tries and face her new world and all its problems. With every attack against her and her friends she starts using and developing the new Eliza. Scared gives away to courage and trust becomes a luxury she needs to avoid. Luke is the all bad and down to business vampire, but unlike the romancing Edward his doesn't do nice. From the moment they meet it is clear that he will play an epic role in this series.
As I adventured more into this book a big connection was made to Karen Marie Moning's Fever series minus fae. But unlike Mac what Eliza discovers about her sister will start a war between two very different vampire groups. But their characters develop much the same and with great speed to survive their new worlds. Some of Barron's character was also found in Luke and that means we have but scratched the surface with him.
Many have said that vampire novels have become predictable and boring. However true in many cases some fresh new plots are found in Anomaly. We don't have overbearing romance and normal human life. Instead JC Emery has given us a more realistic plot with real pain and more action. For me this was a relieve. To find something more than just the usual "love you to death" fix. Eliza's dilemmas seem more realistic as to what a human would have to deal with when it comes to paranormal creatures. I will be looking out for book two to continue the journey.
Quote from the book: "Her words promised more to come. I just didn't know if I could take anymore, but it didn't look like I had a choice in the matter,"

All I can say about this book is that it was an awesome read. I couldn’t put it down and I just got so lost in it that when I reached the end I wanted more. I can’t wait for the next book to come out.
Eliza has been sick with something wrong with her blood since she was younger. She can’t do things that other people her age can do and she hates that. No one wants to go out with a girl that is sick all the time. She is glad that she has her sister Kate because she is always there for her. Sometimes she can be just a little over protective. Everything is going good until they go to a party one night. Everything changes after that. Kate has gone missing and Eliza has new powers that she never knew she had.
This book has so many surprises and it leaves you with more questions then answers. Just when you think you will be getting some answers even more happens and you are like what is going on. It seems everyone Eliza knows is keeping secrets. Who can she trust? She knows that her sister has turned into a vampire and is out to get her. She doesn’t understand why. The only person that she can turn to is Luke but she hates that he is a vampire and he keeps running hot and cold. I am going crazy to find out what happens next. I went to see when the next book comes out but have found nothing on it.
This book leaves you with a big cliff hanger with no end in sight. I am going crazy, so I guess I can understand where Eliza is coming from. She wants answers and so do I. I know that her grandma knows some things but she isn’t telling and now more people are keeping secrets. I feel like I am on an emotional roller coaster. I am asking myself do I really want to know what happens next? I was so hoping that things would work out between Eliza and Luke but he is letting her go. Seems like she is by herself and she only has her friend to talk to. She is still a little scared but she believes Eliza about the whole vampire story and that her sister is still walking around and isn’t dead.
I hope the next book will be out soon, so that I can rest a little better. I would recommend that everyone that loves vampires and mystery to read this book. It has a lot of unanswered questions and it will leave you guessing all the way to the very end.
This book is odd and I couldn't finish it. The main character is a jerk. How is it your sister got attacked and is now missing, her last effort was one to save your life, and yet all you can think of is yourself? Yes, Eliza is attacked also...and what was up with that scene, one minute a dude attacks your sister, then he kind of stands there looking at you, then a second dude shows up and wrecks your body, but you don't go into shock or conk out, you just stay conscious and sort of catalog the different bones as they are broken - then attacker #1 feels sorry for you and drinks your blood, hence the healing *tingle*. But still, after that she pretty much just thinks about how her body is changing, she goes right back to school, she flippantly thinks at one point 'sister or no sister, I aint going back to that neighborhood alone.' That makes sense, but why is she so calm about it? This is not a chick who cares if she ever sees her sister again. That's fine, be an ass, but that scene where she meets some vamp (don't know which one) and like starts slapping at him...and he can't fight back? The suggestion is that she's stronger than him so she wins, but the truth is that a skilled fighter should always beat the unskilled...especially when you're supposed to be talking about someone who's been fighting for hundreds of years. I just couldn't get past that scene, waaay too silly.
I really enjoyed JC's Marital Bitch, so was looking forward to seeing what she did with a vamp story.
From the beginning, I felt a connection to Eliza, having grown up in my own sister's shadow. I really liked the way JC gave us so much information about the sisters and their relationship in that initial party scene. I had several questions though, even at the end of the book, regarding just what Eliza's illness was and how it could relate to her reaction to the attack. I think there's some additional magic/supernatural something-something we're going to find out about in book 2, but that's just my guess. :) Luke ran a little hot and cold for me, but I think with book two I'll get a better feel for him.
While I really enjoyed the story, I felt like the ending was lacking. It may have been a good place to break up the books, but it felt like it just stopped. That said, I'm looking forward to the next book and getting some more answers!
I received an ARC copy of this book in return for an honest review.
Surprisingly good book with a not so surprisingly cliffhanger ending...not even sure if or when there's another book coming out and that sucks as the book was really interesting.
Eliza's character was a bit annoying as she not only spent the majority of the book getting the crap kicked out of her but she also spent more than half the time crying and screaming, I wanted to smack some courage into her and yell at her 'ENOUGH ALREADY! GROW A PAIR!' Towards the end she was a little better but not by much, I just hope that if there's another book, she will be much tougher and less dependent on others...
Not much to say about Luke as of yet, I mean he was a part of Eliza's life at some point but nothing major was really said about him, obviously there's some attraction between them and he's a big bad ass Vampire warrior but nothing was really explained about him or his people....
There are just too many questions left unanswered in this book with no knowledge if there will be another one to follow or not...
Great paranormal read. Eliza is a normal college girl. She was sick as a child and still has to take meds. She isn't Ms. Social, but decides to go to a frat party with her sister and best friend. What a mistake that was.
On the way home, she and her sister get attacked. Kate, her sister, comes up missing. There is a search for her. Eliza is trying to understand what happened to her that night. She returns back to the scene of the attack and meets Luke, a vampire.
Eliza needs to come to terms with what she is becoming. Not fully a vampire, but not a human either. I really loved reading about everything that Eliza is going through. From the loss of her sister, finding out her sister is alive, but not the same, and her feelings for Luke. I can't wait to read more of this story
This book was nothing like I expected. The concept was different and fresh.
I enjoyed Eliza's character a lot. She went from someone who relied on others in the beginning to claiming her independence in the end. She transformed throughout the story. Luke on the other hand, I didn't care much for. He was too wishy washy as a love interest and supporting character.
I really wanted to see more romance in this book, but that was really the only thing I disliked. As far as storyline, it flowed well. The story was overall really good and left me ready for the next book. It didn't tie up any loose ends, but just kind of stopped. Now I have to know what happens.
This was a good new adult book overall and I give it four glittery stars for being original!
I was really impressed with this book. I was disappointed to see the next in the series in not out, nor is it coming out soon...
Eliza is a college student who lives a comfortable life with her sister, Kate and grandmother in New Orleans. While Eliza has always had poor health, her sister has been her caretaker and best friend. On the way home from a party one evening, both Eliza and Kate are attacked. Kate goes missing and Eliza is bitten by a vampire who utters an odd phrase at her. As Eliza investigates and tries to find her beloved sister, she meets a vampire named Luke who helps look and initiate her into her new world. The end is left on a bit of a cliffhanger and I can't wait to read the next in the series.
When I first began reading JC Emery’s Anomaly, I thought that it was going to be similar to other vampire stories I have read in the past—which isn’t a terrible thought, since quite a few of them are rather good—but I was wrong. While Anomaly begins as a run-of-the-mill vampire story, it rapidly evolves into a unique and interesting storyline that had me constantly guessing what was coming next. While the ending wasn’t what I had hoped for or expected, I absolutely recommend this book to others and will be waiting in anticipation for the next chapter in Eliza’s story from JC Emery.
I gave this book 2 stars because I think there could actually be a good story here with a bit of editing and just more story. This seemed like a very drawn out prologue, no answers were revealed, things just happened. Eliza wasn't a very likable character, she just seemed very wishy washy and didn't ever really see the big picture. Luke was interesting but we never really learn about him. Her grandmother seems like she knows more than she's letting on but that's another topic that is never revisited. The story just felt unfinished to me.
Anomaly by JC Emery is a great Vampire read. The New Orleans setting is classic, but the spin JC puts on it is completely original.
JC's writing flows well and kept me engaged in the story as soon as I opened it until I finished it that same night. I spent HOURS reading, but I had to know what was going to happen next.
Eliza's character grows from the first page through the last and I cannot wait for book 2 to see where she goes from here! Great Job, JC!
I enjoyed the first book in this series. I really like Luke! I thought he as sexy but Eliza I wish would just grow a pair. I get the whole thing with her sister is hard, but with everyone but Luke she let's them walk all over her and she is sooo whinny! Fuck just due something. She complains she doesn't want to be the sick girl but now that she isn't she still acts like it. anyone I liked this first book and I can't wait for book two!
love the story and backdrop, but there were so many unanswered questions I would have like to have cleared up before the end of the first book. Also, bad editing! typos everywhere, some sentences even repeated themselves completely. Also, bad editing! typos everywhere, some sentences even repeated themselves completely. Distracting right? Bad enough I considered deleting it but glad I didn't, so on to number 2.
This had me on the edge of my seat awaiting what would be revealed on th. Griping the side of chair with the events as they unfolded only to have more questions that I needed to have answered. I am still waiting for my heart to slow down I am sad that I reached the end but can not wait for the next book. You have to read this book. WOW
Found this book and author by chance. Gave it a shot and found I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. The concept of the story kept my interest. I will be keeping an eye out for the next installment.
This book at me hooked from the first page. The book was well written and the characters were well developed. I enjoyed the book from beginning to end and am waiting on the sequel.
