Samantha Aarons left Sioux Falls with a broken heart for a fresh start in the Montana wilds. Outside Kalispell, the native bears are strange and ferocious – especially when a hulking grizzly steps out of the woods and frightens Sam half to death.
Werebear shifter Don Flood can't believe his incredible luck. The beautiful woman he discovers on patrol just might be his fated mate! The delicate flower faints after seeing him turn into a man, and Don sees his opportunity to charge straight into her heart.
But love makes men do stupid, dangerous things.
The Grizzly Bone Clan has a standing policy against allowing humans on their turf. Still, Don refuses to let the Elders' prejudice steal her away, doubling down on love after Sam reveals the key to the Clan's flatlining population.
Sam soon adores the passionate, wild love of her dominant grizzly man. But Happily Ever Afters never seemed further when a wicked conspiracy threatens to scatter their fate forever.
Can she survive becoming his mate...or will she feel heartbreak twice?
A.T. Mitchell is a veteran writer with a strong affection for sensual mysteries, powerful heroes, and wicked dangers. This author's romance stories may tread a dark path, but they always end up in a sunny place filled with love. In December, 2013, Mitchell became a NY Times and USA Today bestselling author with "Hot Prairie Pursuit" in "The Alpha's Touch" romance collection.
Love deserves to be intense and wild. Mitchell's favorite themes include romantic suspense, potent shifters, hardened ranchers, and erotic romance. Whatever burns while pressing all the right buttons is fair game!
I absolutely love shapeshifter romances and have read more than a few over the years. The more popular shifter books typically focus on wolves or big cats but bear shifter stories are increasing in popularity, so I was happy to buy Love to Bear. And, the cover is smexy so I was sold.
Unfortunately, I was not at all impressed with the story. My feelings for the hero, heroine, and general story flow was neutral around the 50% mark. My expectations for a redeeming ending plummeted as I read further. The story felt contrived. I understand that this is fiction but Sam was agreeable to stay with Don in a hostile shifter commune. She was with her friend Jenn but makes no ruckus about getting word to her that she is alright. Later in the story there is a search for a missing teen but Jenn didn't even report her friend missing when she never came back. She just packs up their campsite and goes home and Sam doesn't connect with her until much later in the story. Jenn only makes a cursory mention of Sam's absence, and spends most of her time making doe-eyes at Don. Again, I understand that this is fiction but Sam's actions and Jenn's reactions just weren't believable.
The insertion of the mild-BDSM play was unexpected...and not in a good way. Sam and Don were cruising along and he was being sweet and attention and then WHAM! Don is spanking her and she is getting "wet" because of it. I had to backtrack a few pages because I thought I missed something. Sadly, I did not and that story was completely thrown in. I know that BDSM romances are hot fiction right now but it doesn't need to be included in every story, and this was one of them. It honestly did not add to the story at all. In fact, it made it feel a bit splintered for me.
Finally, Sam is pregnant. How does she know? She doesn't take a pregnancy test or mention being late or having any other signs of pregnancy. Yet, she tells Don that she is pregnant. Now, shouldn't he have been the one to tell her? Emmerick could obviously smell her pregnancy so then why couldn't Don? That didn't jibe. And, the thing that totally knocked me off-kilter. Don suggests that they get "lit" knowing that Sam is pregnant. The three of them work their way through two pitchers of Sangria. I know shifter babies are hearty but lordy that just felt irresponsible of mommy and daddy to-be.
The ending fell flat for me. Emmerick obviously went through a lot of trouble to keep humans out but I never felt that the "why" question was answered satisfactorily. There was a lot of evidence but the explanation was left wanting.
I did not hate the book; I just did not enjoy it over much. However, someone else may not be bothered at all by the elements that troubled me.
Where to start...this novel had so many holes a reader could fall to their death. We had friends out camping and one friend never came back but she was never reported missing. We had bearshifters who didn't smell pregnancy on their mate but other bears did....We had a mate who "suddenly" knew she was pregnant but had no tests, never mentioned missing a period and then to top it off after she announces it she goes and gets drunk on sangria with her mate and friend. WHO DOES THAT??
I am now going to mention something that I'm sure I am going to take heat for...I knew with the first sex scene that A. T. Mitchell was a man. Why? Let me quote things that the HEROINE said in the novel,"Morning Wood",“Best tongue work I've ever had. It's amazing what you people know how to do, being so isolated out here.”Raging primal lust took over, throbbing in my blood, commanding me to give myself to this beast like the god he was.“Do it. Shoot it fucking deep! I want to drown in your flames...let it all out, baby.”. "He" also had her describe her legs as "delicate thighs" these are all things a woman would never say. Now dont' get me wrong I have no issue with men writing romance, erotic romance but it should be written in a way where the reader knows what sex is writing it.
I could go on, but lets just say this author needed a good editor, copy editor and perhaps more time to hone his craft before offering his work up for purchase. I did give the book 1 star because the premise had some potential but do yourself a favor..there are a lot of really well written books out there...I'd read one of them.
Samantha is out in the wilderness trying to repair her broken heart. When she gets lost in the forest and comes across a bear she tries to protect herself by spraying it, bit the bear moves out of the way and becomes a man. Don is mesmerized by the beautiful angel who comes across his path and when she faints at the sight of him shifting he brings her home to keep her safe. But her being there is a big no no and when she is discovered a council comes to a compromise allowing her to stay with Don in exchange for giving them information about the modern world which they are vastly out of touch with. As she digs through their records she comes across startling information and the one hiding it will do anything to keep for when she has discovered a secret.
There is allot of story packed into a small amount of space, because of that details were left out, and you just have to fill in the blanks. Overall the story is unique and very interesting drawing you in you just have to look past whats missing and enjoy what is there. I got a good laugh out of Sam's first impression of Don and admired her spirit throughout. And I absolutely loved Don, he was a strong Alpha male willing to do things his way even if it meant going against everyone else for his happiness and what was best for his clan.
So yes there was more backstory I would have liked to see and a few small inconsistencies but overall this is an enjoyable short shifter read.
I have so many issues with this book I don't even know where to begin. I suppose the one issue I just could not look over was the fact that the heroine knew she was pregnant (I don't know how she knew that)and agreed to get completely drunk with the hero. The hero also knew she was pregnant and was willing to do whatever needed to be done to keep her and the baby safe - everything but not get completely drunk, obviously.
I couldn't finish it!! I really tried, but the characters were incomplete, even though the plot was decent enough. It needs to be filled out to make it a complete story.
