Santa Fe Flavors is a beautiful little book by Anne Hillerman published in 2009. I have known Anne Hillerman as the daughter of Tony Hillerman who had taken over writing the Leaphorn and Chee series of the death of her father. But in this book Ms. Hillerman acknowledges her grandmothers, Margaret and Lucy, who understood the importance of a good meal. But most of all she expressed her heartfelt gratitude to her mother who taught her two of life’s most important skills: how to read and how to cook.

What I did not know about Anne Hillerman was that she had been a restaurant critic for the Albuquerque Journal’s Journal Santa Fe since 2001. And as Anne Hillerman says, she has had the opportunity to eat her way through much of northern New Mexico. She brings out the menu choices that have deep roots in Northern New Mexico’s history as a Spanish settlement surrounded by Indian pueblos, such as posole and blue corn enchiladas. Throughout the book, the recipes presented are prepared at at an elevation of 7000 feet.

The book is divided into several sections beginning with main dishes, side dishes, soups and salads, and ending with desserts and drinks. Throughout this beautiful book, restaurants are presented with one of their recipes included, many of which I will refer to again. As one who grew up in Northern New Mexico and now returns to Santa Fe several times a year for a visit, there were many of my favorite restaurants featured and many others that I will certainly try on another trip to the “City Different.” But alas, one of our favorites The Pink Adobe is no more but we will always have fond memories. There are quite a few restaurants on Canyon Road that remain favorites and were featured including El Farol and Geronimo. But one of all-time favorite over the years would be La Casa Sena where we have spent a lot of time in their beautiful patio shaded by the trees with the bubbling of the fountains and excellent cuisine as well as cooler evening spent in the cantina listening to show tunes and operatic solos as the waitstaff is also the entertainment. Delightful, but I will end by using the quotation from Anne Hillerman regarding this restaurant.

La Casa Sena. This beautiful restaurant is sheltered in the landscaped courtyard of a building that belonged to one of Santa Fe’s leading families. It is an unexpectedly quiet oasis location inside Santa Fe’s busy downtown. The building, an adobe hacienda, was built in the 1800s, restored in the 1920s and gently updated to meet code and twenty-first century expectations. You can eat beneath the ancient trees, in a formal dining area or in the lively cantina where show tunes are part of the menu. The restaurant has a wine list of more than 1,500 bottles and its own wine shop.”

I wrote this book as a combination restaurant guide and recipe book. In my other life, I'm the restaurant reviewer for New Mexico's largest newspaper (The Albuquerque Journal). "Santa Fe Flavors" grew from five years of serious eating!
The restaurants I consider to be Santa Fe's best contributed a recipe which they adjusted for family-sized servings. The book also has some ideas on altitude adjustment for readers/cooks who aren't in high altitude Santa Fe. You can find ouat more on my website, http://www.annehillerman.com

My husband and I spent 3 weeks discovering Santa Fe's flavors with this book as our guide. Never disappointed! Author and long-time Santa Fean, Anne HIllerman, knows her stuff.

Restaurants of note in Santa Fe

Lots of suggestions for places to eat in Santa Fe.With a sample of one recipe from each restaurant. So you could try out one of the dishes that are made at the restaurant at home before you visit the restaurant. It has the links to each restaurant so you can check them out before you head for the restaurant.

Not so hot. Mostly recipes from what I gather are pretty douchey restaurants. Maybe if this was Albuquerque flavors and specialized in absolute holes in the wall it would be great. Feel like I reading some Napa cookbook with a little sage added.
