Ethnography: Principles in Practice, 3rd Edition

Rate this book
Now in its third edition, this leading introduction to ethnography has been thoroughly updated and substantially rewritten. It offers a systematic introduction to ethnographic principles and practice. New material covers the use of visual and virtual research methods, hypermedia software and the issue of ethical regulation. There is also a new prologue and epilogue. The authors argue that ethnography is best understood as a reflexive process. What this means is that we must recognize that social research is part of the world that it studies. From an outline of the principle of reflexivity the authors go on to discuss and exemplify main features of ethnographic work, including: Throughout, the discussion draws on a wide range of illustrative material from classic and more recent studies within a global context. The new edition of this popular textbook will be an indispensable resource for students and researchers utilizing social research methods in the social sciences and cultural studies.

brilliant book. not a novel that i could flick through. in fact i had to read some of it several times but my impression was the information contained was well researched and the arguments well thought out. i didn't agree with all arguments but this says a lot about the authors. they taught me enough to shape my own views and give intellectual space to metaphorically argue with their conclusions. for an academic writing i couldn't ask for more.

A very nice overview of what ethnography is and what problems an ethnographer is faced with before, during, and after research. Though to my taste the authors are sometimes too positivist and seem to always know what's the best way to do things, their account of how to do a good ethnography is nevertheless very informative, helpful, and thorough. I would definitely recommend this book to social scientists looking for a good introduction to ethnography as a method and as a mode of thinking.

I bought this when I was studying and found it tough going. I think it is now rather dated, so I put it up for sale at a considerable discount.
