The worst part isn't that the H was a (regretful) cheater and had the serial cheating father that served as the example of what NOT to follow, he was boring. So was the heroine. Even the plot moppet.
Another marriage-in-trouble story to add to my collection. Felt like a novella. Less than 200 pages. Both characters in military
Notes: 🫤 Not angsty enough for me. 🫤 She forgave way too soon, in less than a week. The book lost a lot of points for this. It's hard to believe they could resolve their issues in such a short amount of time. 🫤 I hate that she took some of the blame—one of my biggest pet-peeves. She did nothing to deserve that kind of betrayal. 🫤 The author had the characters say (repeatedly) "stuffed up" or " mucked up" instead of "fucked up." I thought that was odd, bleeping out swear words as if we're children. ✔️ His grovel was quite good, at least. Convincing. ✔️ I really, really liked his speeches. I was moved. ✔️ I give her credit for asking him for details about his one-night stand with the OW. Unlike in the previous book I read, where we didn't get any details—at all.
"I need to know the details" "Penny, no." "That wasn't a question, Daniel. I need to know about it. If I don't know, then I can't process it. I can't deal with it. I need to know everything if I'm ever going to understand..."
✔️ His reasons for the cheating were understandable. Of course, it didn't give him a pass, but it made him human. He wasn't an asshole. ✔️ His regret and remorse were effectively shown (not just told). I believed him. ✔️ Decent epilogue.
Reread 12/7/2021 after a discussion on FB… still 3 stars and he’s still a regretful moron.
While his wife is deployed, he’s not happy, not adjusting to civilian life and overwhelmed with being a single dad. He has a drunken one night stand, somehow we’re supposed to have some level of sympathy for him. Apparently, she hasn’t had to deal with the same issues while he served.
She comes home (on leave) for their daughter’s birthday and he’s in full blown forgiveness mode, knowing if she goes back to finish her deployment without forgiving him, it’s likely they aren’t going to survive his cheating.
Fairly well done, and I liked the wife, he’s very regretful and sorry, but I can’t find him remotely sympathetic.
I would not be able to do it. I couldn't forgive my husband if he cheated on me while I was off in war. He was a selfish bastard and she forgave him. Maybe that makes me a little bit evil and bitter but personally I would of chopped off his dick.
Great Read,Danny-Penny both loved each other deeply but cause of spending more time apart(cause of their postings) and lack of communication led their marriage on rocky patch-the final straw being Danny's infidelity.Danny himself regretted it and was disgusted and hated himself for the way he hurt Penny. The fact that Danny came clean about it,never lied to Penny, knew that he has hurt Penny really bad but he wanted to work on his marriage, get that love and happiness back.Penny she was a real strong woman what Danny did shattered her but she again collected herself and decided she will give Danny another chance.
Danny's infidelity rocked the foundation of their love, marriage and happiness.Danny-Penny both acknowledge and accept that the trouble started long time back, they left it which led to almost destruction of their marriage.I was really angry at Danny for what he did,his excuse that he was lonely is not good enough for me cause Penny was also lonely there but she never strayed. But two things melted my anger and made me forgive him -he came clean himself, told Penny what he had done, never lied and he was really ashamed and regretted it -the fact that though he screwed up big time as a husband but he was the best father to their daughter. He really worked on to become a good husband as well.
The author brought out all the emotions so well. Each issues were talked out, both put effort for saving their marriage not only for their child but for their love. The best moment in the book for me was when Danny makes Penny believe that he loves her and only her. After so much pain and unhappiness they finally get their HEA.
This story is about an ex navy husband who cheats on his wife whilst she's away on duty because his ego doesn't let him adjust to becoming a suburban dad. He misses the thrill of the navy and resents his wife being on tour (because he wants to be on tour with his buddies).
Weak. Weak husband, weak excuse for cheating. Weak.
Soraya Lane writes well on a sensitive subject and I found the hero and heroine engaging even though the hero was a low beta with the looks of an alpha and I couldn't quite believe Penny as a sargeant in the army. If the subject matter was anything different I'd say it was a nice sweet book with pretty good writing and well constructed. For that I gave it the three stars. But I couldn't get over the subject matter. As mentioned in my blog I kept putting it down and having to force myself to pick it back up again. This is not a book to read if you want escapism. It is way too real and not in a good way. I read it. I got to the ending, sort of rushed but nice sweet ending. But I walked away from it choked up and queasy and trying not to cry. This is not what I want from a HM&B. If I want that I go look in the novels for something like The Notebook. I didn't feel good at the end of the book so I couldn't give it any feel good or amazing stars.
The story is well written and the hero grovels a lot and I love to see a man in tears (and here it happens more than once) but, there's one, I can't think it's realistic to get over his betrayal in just one week even if there's still love between them and above all since she's soon leaving again at the end of her week leave. If a week was all they nedeed to solve the issues that led to his cheating they could have done the talking the week before her previuos leave. The story is good but a week is a too short timeline to fix something so important and hurtful and she's lived months of hurt and anger before confronting him being overseas. I believe he loves her even if he cheated and that she still does him in spite of what he did but since they have just a week to repair their relationship and save the marriage I feel the timeline rushed their actions because all had to be concentrated in those few days...
I liked the heroine, but found the hero whiny.... and almost jealous that his wife was called back up and forced to serve and he felt sorry for himself for being left behind and I think he purposely screwed around to show how upset he was but during this self pity thing realized how immature and pathetic it made him. He groveled somewhat, but still made it as it was a problem "they" had...no you arrogant fool...she was serving overseas and I imagine with guys hotter than you everyday and night and I wish she had partaken as you did ...after all she was as lonely (even more so..you had everyone BUT her...she had no one) as he was, she was just in love with him... as it was said...& no one but him would do for her, whereas anyone would do for him.
Just a warning - this features a hero who cheated on his wife. I felt that this book did a great job of touching on difficult topics - soldiers returning home and infidelity. I'd give it a higher rating, but I find it really hard to believe that a couple could resolve their issues in a week after the husband has a one night stand. Otherwise an excellent read.
This was a different kind of story. I really wasn't sure at first if I was going to like it. I was firmly on Penny's side -- I don't know that I would forgive him either. But the more I read of the book, the more I came to believe that their marriage could be saved. They obviously did love each other and their daughter. I could see that Daniel deeply regretted what he had done and would do anything to save them. I could also see and understand Penny's reluctance to trust him. I liked the way they finally began to really communicate, as that was the only way they would be able to move forward.
I don’t understand how she didn’t ask more questions, like did you use protection. What if she later turns up with a baby or he turns up with a disease and also he was super drunk but could drive the ow home and have sex with her,and the worst he tried to be nice about leaving the ow when she knew he was married. The H was not redeemable in my opinion she didn’t want to go they made her go and was risking her life while he was feeling bad about himself safe at home.

A beautiful warm story that tugs on your heart strings from the very beginning. It's not the kind of book that I would normally read but once I started reading I just couldn't stop.
Daniel and Penny are in the middle of a crisis and their young daughter is the only thing keeping them together. To make matters worse, Penny is only on leave from the military from 7 days. Can Daniel make things right and regain her trust in such a short amount of time?
The story tackles a well known problem in alot of relationships and leads you through both sides. It covers trust, honesty and most important. Love.
It is a lovely story that I would recommend to anyone. I never thought i would read a book like it, but instead found myself unable to put it down.
Thank you for the opportunity to be a first read for your book.
I reread and I change my comments from the below to - no, it's the book not me. Just flat and boring.
actually didnt finish this book but I still gave it 3 stars because it wasnt the book it was me.
I have been hungering for angsty reads and found my adrenaline dosage came strong with cheating books (which used to be a hard limit but as with any addiction my angst meter needed more and more to satisfy. I think i've overdone it now though as they no longer give me the dosage required. This one was same as many other cheating books.
It was written well, it developed characters and feelings well. It was realistic. I've just been there, read that, too many times.
So i gave it a three. But it wasnt original. It wasnt angsty. It was emotional but predictable and I got bored.
This was a hard story line to read. I am a Vet and have lived the military life. And have seen and heard about infidelity. Even reading about it hurts my heart. They both were in the service. He was Navy, she Army. But they made it work. Until he got out and she was not able too. Now she is home for their daughters birthday. And someone forgot their marriage vows. Will they be able to forgive? Can someone forget? Sometimes one person is very selfish and forgets that the one they love is in the same boat, but miles away. And with no support, only trust.
✨Calificación: 3/5 ⭐⭐⭐ ✨Serie: Heroes come home #3 ✨Protagonistas: Daniel y Penny
I enjoyed this book but it was a tough one to rate. I bought this at a local library sale but it is not for the under 18 readers. I've given it a 4* rating. There was a lot of turmoil and indecision on the heroine's part and a lot of sadness all around. It was a fairly fast moving story. It is centered around on forgiveness, something we all need to do a little more of.
I liked this story, with infidelity there is no simple I'm sorry. And all should be forgiven. Daniel worked on getting his wife's forgiveness. Didn't take for granted that it was a done deal. And that he showed his heartbreak over what he did. Good story!!
honestly the plot itself isn't really appealing to me; i read to make myself happy, not distressed. and yet somehow the writing really made it kinda special and i love how the Hero genuinely grovel to get the heroine back. solid 3.5 stars from me.
I bought this after reading the review over on The Misadventures of Super Librarian (Super Wendy to most folks). So glad I did -- the subject matter is touchy. It's not an insta-fall-in-love story. The couple is already married and have a four year old daughter. They were both in the military, but they decided they'd both leave at the end of their terms. Except the heroine has been "stop-lossed" which means that even though she's served her term, the army won't let her out and she's forced to stay overseas, leaving the husband to raise their daughter alone and learn how to be a civilian again.
When you first meet the couple, you learn that the husband did the unthinkable in a romance -- he's cheated. Only once, but still that trust is broken.
Soraya has handled the issue realistically -- she has the heroine facing the same internal battles I would face with such a revelation. And asks the same questions. And she's made the hero, with all his flaws, and that normally dealbreaker of infidelity, allowed the reader to see some of the conflict he was going through that led him to such a bad decision.
I loved the skill of Soraya's writing as the couple faced the problems in their marriage and tried to decide whether it was worth saving. She's definitely become an autobuy author for me.
BACK IN THE SOLDIER’S ARMS by author Soraya Lane is a February 2012 release from Mills & Boon Cherish and March 2012 Harlequin Romance.
Penny Cartwright comes home on a short visit after serving in the US Army to a husband who cheated on her. Can she forget and forgive him? After all she loved her husband, Daniel and there’s been no other man for her.
Daniel wants to hold onto his beautiful wife because he loved her as well. Can he really make her fall in love with him all over again? Was his weakness excusable?
Though Penny may not be ready to forgive Daniel but she can’t fault his relationship as a father to their daughter. As she says, ”…there’s no one else I’d trust with our daughter than you…”
BACK IN THE SOLDIER’S ARMS takes us to unexpected depths of human relationships and trust. Soraya Lane bring this powerful story of a soldier’s personal relationship while serving in the army with such realistic imaginary that we are in there with Penny all the way, when her marriage gets on the rocks and she works through it. And the relationship depicted between Daniel and their daughter is enthralling. It’s a wonderfully poignant tale of old passions, second chances and everlasting love!
Back in the Soldier's Arms is heartwarming. After Daniel has made one unforgivable mistake, he knew that he will need to regain Penny's trust. Both are in the armed services but Daniel has finished his terms. Like most military man, he had to adopted to civilian life but not able to figure out how. Feeling alone and getting stupidly drunk, he has one night of indiscretion which he told Penny about. Penny's term was extended. She couldn't leave until she finished serving her military term. Both have to be honest with each other in order to save their marriage.
The story clicked. It started with the problem and finished with a solution.
Likeable characters and a story line that is all too familiar. Wife is forced to remain on active duty due to a stop/lose and husband is discharged and becomes the single home parent. He is angry and depressed and lonely. He gave up his high octane career only to be disappointed and his ego is taking a severe beating. It seemed like he was looking for less loneliness than for sex. He was honest and repentant. The h was justifiably angry and betrayed. The story was of their mutual forgiveness and honest desire to rebuild broken trust.
