I have been reading ancient Greek plays. So a GR friend suggested a Greek history. One other the one I have selected. I selected poorly. Friend undoubtedly chose better.
Tedious. Not enlightening. Trying of patience and endurance.
Now I have put on my tbr list The Histories along with The History Atlas of Europe. I have just bought these books today, so now it will be a matter of finding time.
Essentially a school book written in the days when education meant learning something. Nevertheless, a clear and concise vision of the Ancient Greeks and a salutary lesson on the intrinsic problems of democracy - how to protect it and how to throw it away.
Except for the final chapter, Smith focuses on political and military history. A better acquaintance with Greek people and places before starting this book would have made its reading more valuable.
Essentially a school book written in the days when students had no computers and had to work extremely hard. It's a standard history, this edition suffers from abridgements and revisions which brought the edition up to date with modern research - unfortunately as my third impression is from the 1900's this careful abridgement and revision has been superseded by subsequent developments.
