"No matter how many times he told himself that he was well rid of her, it never stopped him from loving her and wanting her.Dawn- with the red-gold blaze of the sun in her hair and the turquose blue of the sea in her eyes. She was the sun and the sea to him-the heights and the depths." -Slater
*** "The Second Time" is actually a second chance at love for both lovers. In this story the heroine Dawn Canady chose money over love and left our hero Slater McBride heartbroken, a mistake that has cost her dearly. She comes back to her hometown eleven years later as a widow with a son, wanting a second chance of love from the very angry and bitter hero who still have desperately loved her all this time.
In so many ways, this story hurt to read. This is a rare case of hero being jilted by the heroine to marry a rich man just for his money, he has never forgotten her and never stopped loving her. I just felt so sorry for the way his heart was slaved to her. He was angry when she was back, so afraid to lose to her, so afraid to lose his pride and self-respect. She destroyed him all these years ago for her selfishness, i do however admire how self-reflecting she is and that she seems to have learned the lessons of life when she made the selfish decision and she was young after all. Still, she did so much damage to him that i was even surprised she thought it would be so easy to get back together with him again when she clearly had traumatized him. Slater was gone for her as soon as he saw her again, i also love how he passionately kissed her the same day...such a besotted hero. What also was obvious is that he has not had many lovers in their separation since he mentions how he spent thousands nights alone without her.His love and need for Dawn took my breath away .I do however belive in their Second Time of love...together with their son.
3⭐️ Hated this h so much.🤬 (1/5) Loved the H. (5/5) Writing 2.5/5 Angst/emotional 2/5
Basic story: spoilers
The MCs were deeply in love (18h), but she dumped the poor H for a rich guy. Few nights before she was to marry the rich om, she had sex with the H, because she’s not just a gold digger, but a cheater too. After sex, she puts her big diamond ring back on.🤢
She marries the rich guy, and shes happy that she’s pregnant. She thinks it’s the om baby, but wait, he tells her he can’t have babies…he’s sterile. Its H baby, but she doesn’t tell him, because she’s a selfish bitch. Her rich hub loved her enough to forgive her. And this is when she starts realizing what a bitch she is. She said she stayed with the hub, because she wanted to make him happy.
When the rich hub dies 11 years later, she finds out that her hub left her barely any money. She returns home with her son to tell the poor H, who is now rich, about his son. The poor H is still not over the h. Sigh.
This book was a complete role reversal where the h is the one in the relationship who had moved on, while the H hadn’t. She also didn’t a have to grovel or chase him to get him back.
- I wanted some ow drama! This h needed to grovel and she didn’t.
- safety 11 yr separation
- both not celibate ( he never mentioned ow or his sexual past, but I’m assuming he wasn’t celibate for 11years, because it’s been 11 friggin years, and he never said he was celibate) - no ow - h said her rich hub wasn’t bad in bed. He also loved her. She started caring deeply for the hub when he died.
The H and h had a relationship when she was 18 years old. She left the H to marry a rich man because she wanted to marry money.
Now, 11 years later, her rich husband has died and she returns with her son to the city where the H and her nice parents still live. Her son’s father is the H, but he doesn’t know that he has a child. The H is now rich as well. That’s where the book begins.
My heart felt for the H:
~ “When you married him, you took everything — my heart, my pride, my all. You left me barren and empty — like this house! Crying out for — for you!” ~
I hated that she and her rich husband have had sex all those years and that her husband ‘had not been sexually unsatisfying as a lover’.
~ “You don’t know the hell I’ve gone through,” he muttered with an ache in his voice, “knowing you legally belonged in another man’s bed — and picturing you lying in his arms.” ~
I think the H was celibate for all those 11 years because he says to her: “Do you think one night with you can make up for the thousands I spent alone?”
It was a good read because he is smitten, besotted, crazy in love. But I hate her and because he is her doormat, I take one star off. It’s 4 stars.
A great Janet Dailey boom ... written by "the" Janet Dailey written years before her death.
Great storyline. Great writing. I didn't care for Slater's attitude near the end. However, it was understandable, not just "another plot point to break Dawn & Slater up."
She had been an impetuous teenager when she had defied her love for Slater MacBride to marry a Texas millionaire, and she regretted her mistake. After eleven years of marriage without love, Dawn Lord was returning to her home in the Florida Keys, seeking peace in the turquoise waters of the sea.
But she found only storms of desire when confronted by Slater. Once a penniless speculator, now a local tycoon, he vowed to make up for lost time--in every way.
Were they merely fooled by an intoxicating passion--or would they reach the heights and depths of love this time?
