Yes, I liked it. Didn't love it, but liked it!

I liked Jake because he was gruff and big and gentle.

I liked Isabel because she fel in love with Jake in spite of his being big and gruff.

I didn't like Jake because he was an idiot and pushed Isabel into Dominic's hands even if he was crazy in love with her.

I didn't like Isabel because she seduced Jake without a thought, just because she lusted for him and then didn't even realized that she was pregnant with his child.

I liked Jake because he loved his brother very much.

I liked Isabel because she confessed to Dominic that she was with Jake's child and couldn't marry him (Dominic) because she's in love with Jake.

I LOVED Dominic because he was great both to Jake and to Isabel!!!!

That's why I want to read his story! LOL

I loved this book. It had all the suspense and intrigue that I love in a historical.

I was extremely intrigued by the premise of a heroine that couldn't hear or speak. I wondered how the author would pull that off. I just couldn't imagine how she and the hero would get to know each other without being able to communicate. But I shouldn't have worried because I've read Samantha Holt's books before and know that she's a great author.

I really liked Jake and his brother Dominic. Both were good men and they had a great relationship. I'll admit that I was a little confused at first as to why Dominic was the lord of the estate, but it was soon cleared up.

Isabel...she just couldn't catch a break. But, with all the stuff she went through, it brought her to Jake & Dominic's doorstep. I loved that Jake was instantly protective of her and wanted to go after the guys that hurt her. And he took great care of her.

I did have a few questions that went unanswered...First, I know Everard was a bad guy...pure evil. But I was kind of curious as to what he threatened Isabel with to make her flee. I had a few ideas and my imagination ran away with me, but I still wanted to know. Second, Isabel's group of attackers...why did they attack? Were they just a random group of bad guys that saw a female without protection and attacked? Or were they sent by someone?

Other than that, I really enjoyed this book and I can't wait to read about Dominic. He's such a great guy and he deserves a HEA.

When he encounters a badly beaten but clearly beautiful young woman while out hunting, Jake immediately feels protective of her and takes her back home to his brother's keep. He had thought never to marry again after the misery his first wife brought him, but he admires Isabel's courage and winds up longing for more with her, though he is sure he can't compete with his charming brother, the lord of the estate of Thornewall.

Unable to read or write and having lost her hearing and speech in the attack, Lady Isabel is feeling vulnerable but determined never to endure such again. She keeps quiet about her past and hopes she is well hidden enough in the Borderlands that those who search for her won't find her.

Jake is seen by most as a gruff giant, but Isabel sees his gentle side. Yet Jake believes he is incapable of being a good husband and knows he can't trust any woman again. Isabel is completely besotted with Jake, but she still fears sharing her secrets and with his mistrust, that might be enough to keep them apart.

We have definite instalove here, but when only one will admit to it, problems ensue. Although communication could've eliminated many issues, when the truth comes out it is too late and Jake withdraws, believing he's been lied to yet again. These two almost didn't wind up together, but their tumultuous relationship was a very interesting read.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Lord Jake of Greycroft cannot fight the attraction and love he has for Isabel, but he tries continuously for her sake. After what has happened to his wife, he knows he is not good enough for her. He feels his brother, Lord Dominic, is more suited to care for and keep Isabel safe and happy. But the idea of her being with another drives him mad with jealousy. Lady Isabel loves Jake and wishes she could be with him always. She is keeping an important secret from him, something she hopes he can forgive her eventually. When he does hear her secret, he remembers the lies his wife has told him and cannot let her betrayal go. Isabel does not know what to do. She does know she cannot go back to her father and give into his wishes. She will do anything to stay out of his clutches. After coming upon a lady in distress at the hands of ruffians, Jake brings her back to the family keep and hopes she survives. Even though she cannot hear or speak, they understand each other better than anyone else. Admiration and attraction evolve into something stronger as they spend time together, but will deceit ultimately rip them apart? Or will Isabel's ambitious father find her first and send her to a cruel and inevitable death? I do love a good historical romance. This is sweet and tender as well as erotic and filled with tension. The world is vividly written and makes the reader want to be on the English/Scottish border. The chemistry between Jake and Isabel is deliciously satisfying. I truly enjoy most of the characters in the story, especially Lord Dominic, and I look forward to the sequel that sends him a lady to curb his lascivious tendencies. Jake is strong, handsome, very tall, loyal and his brother’s right hand man. He has been betrayed in the past and holds himself above and away from any entanglements. The betrayal has caused him to second guess his suitability as a match and has burdened him with guilt. In spite of these feelings he is an incredibly kind, caring and gentle.

Isabel is beautiful, strong willed, feisty, a noble born lady. She is running from something that has her determined to give up everything. Growing up Isabel has only known men to be unfeeling and coldhearted- namely her father. She engenders loyalty.

This is a delightful story that renews a man’s faith in love and shows a woman that not all men are like those she grew up around. It was wonderful seeing the spirited Isabel giving Jake a run for his money. I enjoyed the angst and cheered for the love. I loved how quickly I was a fan of the characters, well written and intriguing. Ms Holt is a new author to me and one I will be following.

I enjoyed reading this book. It has intrigue, mystery, danger and romance. Both the H/h are strong characters in their own right. Our heroine, Isabel is brave as she is running away from an abusive man who her father has betrothed her to. Our hero Jake finds her near death and rescues her. Isabel has lost her voice and cannot hear. They find a way to communicate and become enamored with each other. However, she is harboring a dark secret and Jake fears his past will compromise his future. Isabel fears if Jake knew he would not have her. Then danger comes to Isabel and Jake and his brother Dominic fight for her. A very good story.

Lady Isabel and two brothers, Jake and Dominic, take us on an incredibly exciting adventure filled with secrets, lies, betrayal and above all a passionate romance.
I loved how Isabel rebuilt herself after running from an unwanted betrothal and I can't help but admire her strength of character and belief in love.

Well, OK

I enjoyed the story well enough. It has a captivating opening, and a couple of minor characters get some development. My biggest complaint is the number of typos. They constantly threw me off. So enjoy Jake and Isabel, but be prepared to stumble through the text.

Good read

This historical romance has everything that a good one should. A hero who rescues an injured maiden. Falls in love with her. Almost loses her again and has to rescue her from being kidnapped. Lots of romance and action.

Lovely read

Enchanting tale that depicts the sad state of manipulation and trechery a woman faced in medieval times. The characters are well thoughtout and show the courage it took to defy the norm of the times. It took courage to find a future. Jake and Izzy learn that when they face their demons together there is hope. Samantha Holt is so worth getting to know. I have read several of her books and truly enjoy her writing style.

Our Review

What an enjoyable read. This is a first time author for me.This story is a short story and is part of a series filled with love, romance and a hint of danger.

This is a romance between Lady Isabel and Jake .It was one of those romances that develops slowly after Jake found Isabel half beaten from a bunch of ruffians. While Isabel is recuperating from her injuries Jake and Isabel form and friendship that develops into more.Isabel hearing is impaired and she cannot talk after her beatings and Jake is the only one who seems to be able to understand what Isabel is communicating without words or sounds.

The author did a fine job in developing a plot with love and danger within this short story.I just love reading about Highlanders and there escapades.I love how protective they are about whom they love.

Jake and Isabel are attracted to each other from the very beginning. They seem to make the perfect couple.Jake is a bit cautious with Isabel not knowing anything of her or her past. Most of his fears come from having been married to spiteful wife who has passed on. He has trust issues.Isabel also has trust issues and she is running from a abusive father and a betrothal no better. She feels safe in Jakes arms but, not safe enough to tell the whole truth about herself. If she tells the truth she is afraid that she will lose the one she has come to love...

When reading a story I always seem to pick out a favorite character that I like to brag about but in this case they were all just so lovable.Isabel was one of those characters that made you feel protective of.She was such a loving individual. She cared for those all those around her.She was the type who had a little bit of backbone but not to fierce but a huge an loving heart. When she was happy she glowed.

Jake is handsome and fierce warrior .Tall dark handsome and deadly as sin.He is protective of those he loves and cares for.He has a great relationship with is brother Lord Dominic. All those around him love and respect him.He will go to all lengths to defend those who try to hurt the ones he loves but also avenge any wrong doing that was done to those he cares about.

I loved reading about Jake and Isabel's journey. There was love and pain .As always true love is never easy.Jake must overcome his demons of his past in order to commit to Isabel with ones whole heart. And Isabel needs to find a champion for her cause. She needs to heal from past hurts also in order to trust those around her to protect and love her.Even though you sense she does trust Dominic and Jake she is always holding back and in order to truly be happy herself she also needs to come to grips with her past and heal those past wounds.

Just loved it.The plot was interesting .It had a little bit of everything to keep the reader interested in the on going story. It was a fast paced read for me and and enjoyable one that had me starting on the next book in its series right away after finishing this one.

A recommended read to all. Looking forward to reading other books from this author and her new releases.A job well done.

I've read several of Ms. Holt's novellas (this is my seventh, to be exact) and have found them all to be fabulously entertaining. For me, Ms. Holt's books have consistently been 4 and 5 star reads. She has a wonderful writing style and uses her extensive creative ability to create characters that the reader cares about.

In this story, Jacob (Jake) finds Isabel as she is being beaten by a band of ruffians. He rescues her and takes her to Thornewall, his brother's keep. Isabel very quickly becomes attached to Jake. She instinctively trusts him and feels safe with him, yet she has a secret that she is reluctant to share. As for Jake, he is very much a tortured hero. Jake is a wonderful, caring, devoted man, whose confidence in himself has been severely undermined by his late wife, a deceitful, vile woman. In the years since her death, Jake has closed off his heart and is determined to never again marry. He is very much attracted to Isabel; however, and cannot prevent himself from falling in love with her.

For her part, Isabel recognizes Jake for the wonderful, caring man he is and very quickly loses her heart to him. But there is the matter of the secret she withholds from Jake. She is unsure how he will be react once she confides in him. Before Jake and Isabel can achieve their HEA they must learn to trust one another completely, overcome past insecurities, and elude a man who will do anything to claim Isabel as his own.

Jake's brother, Dominic, figures heavily in this story. He too is a wonderful character. Dominic provides tremendous support to the couple, and is very instrumental in them getting their HEA. Dominic is the hero in the next Borderland novel entitled Borderland Beauty. I cannot wait to see Dominic get his HEA. He so deserves it!

The only issue I had was with the timeline. The story covers a period of several weeks, possibly months. There were times when I had difficulty determining how much time had elapsed between events...sometimes I thought we were still reading about the same day only to discover that a day or more had past. Other than that minor issue, I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It is sweet and romantic. I loved it and highly recommend it. Happy reading! BTW this is not a clean romance, but then I've never read a clean romance by Ms. Holt. LOL

On the night of her betrothal, Lady Isabel has run away from an arranged marriage with a sadist. She is intent on forging her own destiny, perhaps a lady's maid in Scotland. Unfortunately, during her journey north, she is ambushed by a gang of men intent on stealing her jewels. When she fights back, they beat her and leave her for dead. Jake chases off the gang and is surprised to find a noble lady alone and near death on his brother's lands. From the beginning, she captures his heart, but will her secrets and his past prevent him from claiming her?

I loved the characters in this story. Lady Isabel is feisty, independent, and sweet. Jake's brother, Dominic, is flirtatious, intelligent, compassionate, and loyal to his brother and his people. Jake has been misjudged based on his size and has built an armor of protection around himself because of it. I have known young men like Jake. They grow tall at such a young age, that people expect them to act more the age they appear than the age they actually are. This makes them appear socially awkward, when society is actually the awkward factor. Luckily, Isabel sees the true Jake and does not make the common assumptions. He is a warrior, but inside he is still a teddy bear and his soft heart has fallen for her.

I enjoyed this lighter story. Think of it as éclair cake (my favorite dessert) after a satisfying, but heavy, meal of steak and baked potatoes. They're all delicious, but sometimes you just need a little fluffy dessert.

This is the second book I have had the privilege of reading from Ms. Holt and I absolutely love her style. This book is reminiscent of the classic bodice-rippers of my youth with added humor and wit. I will be immediately reading the next book in this series and I have another of her books on my personal TBR list that I am looking forward to reading.

I would have to say the author has brought another exceptional well written novel to her readers with The Borderland Legacy. Borderland Bride is the first in a two book series, but each can stand alone. While riding out, Jake find Lady Isabel and takes her to his brothers keep. They find out she does not have the capable to hear or talk due to an accident that happened. He believes that he kept all his feelings blocked away since his ex wife, while Lady Isabel seems to be hiding a secret too. Can these two recover over their trust issues and learn that their is possibly something more there or will they throw everything away?

The author manages to show that when you lose your sense of hearing and talk other senses will start to cover those. I love the strong characters that she has written in this book. She shows that Lady Isabel has a sense of independence and her love for those around her and self sacrifice, especially during this one part in the novel she was willing to sacrifice everything just to save the friends she made and love. Jake's love for his brother is strong and he is willing to do anything for Dominic's keep even if its give up the love of his life, but you also see a caring side of him besides the temper that he likes to portrays. With all of these different characteristics to me the plot still flowed perfectly, and lets not forget the mixture of suspense! I say that this is another well worthy reading novel to pick up, this author always seems to amaze me with what she brings next!

Meet Lord Jacob, Jake, a man who towers over most others in a time when brave knights rescued damsels in distress. He's always felt off kilter, more so after his wife destroyed what little self-confidence he had. But he hasn't lost his sense of chivalry, and proves as much when he rescues Lady Isabel from ruffians.
Lady Isabel suffers horrendous injuries in the attack, leaving her mute with a horrible ringing in her ears that makes it difficult to hear. She feels for the giant of a man who waded into the fray and saved her from certain death. That feeling grows to love, but her past will soon catch up with them, and they're left dangling on a thin thread of distrust and emotional pain.
The first book in Samantha Holt's Borderland Legacy, Borderland Bride yanks the reader right into the story. Set in the years after the Black Plague, in Scotland, the dialogue and settings are amazingly authentic, giving one the sense of being there with Jake and Isabel as they tremulously work their way through love's first glimmering.
I found this book delightful, a read hard to put down, and highly recommend it for all lovers of historical romance.

I was swept away by Borderland Bride from the first page. As usually, Samantha Holt captivates her readers with her wonderful story line, characters and writing! I loved all of Samantha’s characters in this one and was completely drawn to Lord Jacob and Lady Isabel and their entertaining relationship. Jake considers himself a giant because he is unusually tall, he also has had his heart broken and been betrayed by his wife, when she was alive. Isabel is a strong, determined lady who is running from men who only want to control her and do not care for her safety at all. She swears she does not need a man in her life, until she meets a tall, handsome man who rescues her and cares for her. Samantha had me laughing and at times, crying along with her characters. Her writing is wonderful, you can feel all of the emotion she puts into her story and the chemistry between her characters. I felt as if I was truly apart of this book and the characters! I am excited to start Borderland Beauty and find out what Ms. Holt has in store for Dominic! Thank you for another wonderful story Samantha!

If you like medieval romance you will love this first book in this series. On the run Lady Isabel is attacked and nearly beaten to death. Thankfully for her Jake shows up and saves her. He takes her back to his brother Dominic’s home who is lord of Thornwall Keep. There she slowly recovers from her injuries and ends up falling in love with Jake. Jake is not looking for a wife. He had one and that didn't go to well. He tries to fight his attraction but is loosing that battle soon enough but he is still conflicted because he doesn't feel worthy enough for Isabel. Isabel has secrets she is trying to hide for her own safety. When she is about to confess all to Jake her secrets come out and Jake feels betrayed by her. I won’t give away anything but the story has some nice twists and turns before Isabel and Jake are finally together forever. I loved the connection between Isabel and Jake. This is the first book by Samantha Holt I read and I have to say I really like her writing style. It was a great story. It didn't drag and it wasn't hurried. It was exactly right. Looking forward to reading more stories by this author.

Borderland Bride

I’ll admit I haven’t read much medieval romance in the past, or anything written by this author, but this book has definitely changed that going forward (on both points). I thoroughly enjoyed this book, from start to finish. Lady Isabel is feisty and knows what she wants from her life despite what her father has planned, and will do anything she can to avoid the path set out for her – unfortunately the Borderlands in the 14th Century isn’t somewhere a Lady should be out alone. Jake is the knight in shining armour, and instantly feels protective over Isabel after finding her. Both Jake and his brother, Dominic, grow attached to Isabel as she recuperates but as her secrets come out, will either of them win her hand, or is there someone in her past that will claim her. A sweet romantic read full of emotion, sacrifice and pain, which was incredibly well written and pulled at the heart strings.
