Much as I usually love Donna Fletcher's style and heroines and heroes and everything, plot twists and repetitive story included, this time I was just pissed off by the end of it.
So, like other reviews are saying, the first part of this book is actually pretty great and exactly what the summary promises--which, in turn, is what earns it three stars instead of two. Twins Fiona and Aliss are used to being together, but then Fiona has a marriage arranged for her, which goes against her free and open nature, yada yada yada. So, she concocts a plan to at least delay the marriage by making herself and Aliss indistinguishable from one another, which of course leaves the groom, Tarr, confused as to what the heck he's gotten himself into.
The first part of the story's pretty amusing, with Fiona and Tarr developing an attraction for one another, but all the while Fiona isn't giving up the ruse and still has Aliss and her switching places--just, er, not for the kissing bits, of course. Charming as this is, after a while when it's clear that Tarr and Fiona have fallen in love and therefore should just get together...
...well, the author sees fit to continue the back-and-forth banter and "yes but NO"-ness of Fiona just refusing to marry...just because. Like, the further on you get through the story, the less sense it makes for why this woman could possibly still have reserves about the marriage, even after hearing exactly what she wants from Tarr several times already, and not to mention having gotten her way just as much as any spoiled brat would. It was...irritating, to say the least, and I found myself losing patience with Fiona and wishing that Tarr would dump her--like any sane man outside of a romance novel would.
I'm therefore officially labeling Fiona a contrary heroine, as I'm not sure that she knows what she wants or that even we, the readers, are supposed to know what she even wants after a while. It's just confusing and unfocused, and takes away from the enjoyment of the mystery element that otherwise develops the plot.
Definitely one of the weaker reads by Donna Fletcher for me!
I will still be reading the sequel however, as I do like Aliss's character considerably more, and hope that her love story proceeds differently and is therefore more enjoyable as well!
