This author is sometimes listed as William L. Buhlman, however he publishes books under "William Buhlman" only.
In 2011 William Buhlman was diagnosed with stage four cancer of the tonsil and lymph nodes. Instead of despairing, he started to go out of body to send healing to his physical body, and used this time as a way of focusing on the afterlife, investigating it in out-of-body experiences and in lucid dreams.
In many ways this is the book I've been waiting for William Buhlman to write. It shows that he's got some writing experience now, as this latest book still keeps the 2 part format, but flows much more nicely than his previous works.
To many readers of OBE and new age books much of what he found won't be totally new BUT the way that Buhlman wrote this book paints a much more coherent picture of the afterlife. I was sceptical of the fictional character approach but I must say it totally worked. Writing this book through a 3rd person character allowed Buhlman to step back and detach from what he was going through with his own cancer. Fans of Buhlman will find that a few parts of the story will remind them of his actual OBE experiences documented in his previous works.
Who knows if everyone's journey to the afterlife will be like this. After all, everyone's journey on Earth is markedly different. However, I do believe having any map is a million times better than no map at all. Therefore, this book is highly recommended! :)
A first-hand account of the higher dimensions of the afterlife is what William Buhlman shares in Adventures in the Afterlife. Mr. Buhlman is a recognized expert on out-of-body (OBE) and near-death experiences (NDE). Like Robert Monroe, he discovered how to initiate OBEs at will and explore the higher dimensions. When faced with his own mortality in the form of cancer, he turned his OBE experiences to the subject of the afterlife.
AN AFTERLIFE OVERVIEW
In Mr. Buhlman’s previous book, Adventures Beyond the Body, he describes his discovery of how to induce an OBE and his initial explorations of the nonphysical dimensions. He even provides some suggestions on how to achieve that state yourself.
In Adventures in the Afterlife, Mr. Buhlman weaves his experiences into a narrative description of the look and functioning of the afterlife. He does this in Part One (ACCELERATED EVOLUTION) through telling a fiction about a man, Frank Brooks, who dies of throat cancer.
Frank’s first taste of the afterlife is in a “heaven” modeled after the traditional religion he followed in his physical life. It is a place of “red-brick, colonial-style houses, each with a white picket fence and slate stones leading to a covered front porch.” His deceased mother lives in one of these houses and he reunites with her. They live in this place together, among like-minded people, attending church services and bible studies.
This heaven is a pleasing place for Frank until questions build in him that those around him can’t answer. He finally strikes out on his own to explore the wider reaches of “heaven.”
What he finds is higher dimensions and teachers who guide him in exploring them. This exploration includes schools where he learns how the universe really works and how to progress spiritually. Frank throws himself into this education, finding in it a greater, more fulfilling perspective on what the universe really is and how it works.
In Part Two (PREPARE FOR YOUR ADVENTURE), Mr. Buhlman expounds upon the material he presented fictionally in Part One. This includes the power of directed concentration and meditation, the importance of nonattachment, states of mind in the afterlife, and the nature of the “heavens” people find after death.
Much of Part Two describes methods for developing our spiritual awareness to better live in this life and prepare for the next. Mr. Buhlman emphasizes developing your creative ability, observing your thoughts, and losing attachments through meditation.
Part Two contains a chapter on “Questions and Answers” concerning OBEs and the afterlife. The book concludes with a glossary and a few diagrams that should help readers new to this material to better visualize it all.
BASED ON MR. BUHLMAN’S BRUSH WITH CANCER
The fiction in Part One is based on Mr. Buhlman’s struggle with cancer in 2011. He recovered, but used the experience as the foundation for his story of Frank Brooks, who dies and subsequently experiences the afterlife. That Frank’s story is based on Mr. Buhlman’s comes from the book blurbs and the Bio Page on Mr. Buhlman’s website. This isn’t noted in this book’s text. That’s probably good, as I take it the story is meant to illustrate points about OBEs and the afterlife rather than about Mr. Buhlman (who speaks about his bout with cancer in Monroe Institute videos).
There are a number of important and uplifting points stressed in Adventures in the Afterlife. These include our nature as multidimensional beings, what death really is, the importance of realizing our creative abilities, and the thought-responsive nature of the higher dimensions.
ILLUSTRATIVE STORY AND DIAGRAMS
To begin with, I was dubious about Mr. Buhlman using the device of a fiction to introduce the material in this book. He begins the story without preamble or commentary. On retrospect, though, I think it was a good choice, especially for readers not used to this subject. The story provides an illustrative reference for the book’s second part.
I have read many books and articles on OBEs, NDEs, religion and spirituality. I think this book provides a really good distilling of all this material. How close to the truth it is, I can’t say. I suspect, however, that it is pretty close.
I liked, very much, the “Techniques for Change” presented in Chapter Six, especially the guided meditations. The points he makes here are similar to some I’ve run across elsewhere and have found helpful.
The “Questions and Comments” in Chapter Nine present the “bottom line” for all that’s come before—in this book and others on the subject. This is “the chase” that the rest of the book leads to.
I especially liked the last section of Diagrams. These are four illustrations depicting the concepts presented in the rest of the book. Along with the beginning fiction, they provide a foundation the reader’s thinking about the transdimensional realms of the universe.
MAKES SENSE OF A PARANORMAL SUBJECT
This book is as clear a description of the way the universe is constructed and works, based on peoples’ experiences with the spiritual dimensions, that I have seen. I have been reading this kind of material for a long time and Adventures in the Afterlife, to me, makes the best sense of it all.
This book was both an unpleasant and a pleasant surprise.
Given William Buhlman's impressive accomplishments with The Monroe Institute and beyond, I was certain I would find a high-quality tutorial with practical techniques within its pages. So, when I began reading, I was taken aback to find the first part is fiction. As someone who isn't a fan of fiction, my narrow-minded first thought was, "I'm not here for fantasies; I want to learn applicable methods!"
However, as I kept reading, I realized the partly-fictional story is not just an emotionally engaging rollercoaster, but also a treasure trove, rich with material from his actual experiences. This is especially true for someone like me, who has more limited experience in the astral realms.
The book's second half shifts to a more traditional non-fiction style. This section greatly helped solidify the ideas, beliefs, and world models that Buhlman constructed from his experience. While I can't say what others will take from it, or whether they will accept the concepts he offers, for me it was a perfect match.
By the time I neared the end, I was already wondering when I would reread it. For me, that is the clearest sign that this will be one of my most valued books.
The writing itself wasn't great, the prose could be garish at times. But the ideas and concepts explored were absolutely fascinating and helped to expand the frontiers of the imagination.
This book is a must-read for anyone who's going to die (which is all of us) and isn't sure what they will find on the other side (which is most of us).
The author is an adept out-of-body explorer, and I can tell you from my own explorations that what you learn "out there" is true. Buhlman has the ability to stay out a long time and bring the information back with him, so it's fascinating to get a first-hand account of what it's like on the other side of death. Near-death experiencers only get a glimpse of it; explorers like Buhlman take the grand tour.
The book begins with a fictional account of a man's experiences after death. Buhlman should stick to nonfiction. But the information is golden.
I have read all of Buhlman's books, and each one has completely new information. Unlike many nonfiction authors, he does not simply dress up the same old information in new clothing.
This book is essentially divided into two parts. The first being a work of fiction inspired by experiences and real life accounts that the author claims to have gone through. I enjoyed much of the first half, especially the beginning. Some of the things described will probably stay with me forever. But then as the story concludes it gets rather monotonous. Then the second half is more of an instructional manual. It contains steps on how to prepare yourself and others for spiritual awareness, enlightenment. It’s starts off ok but ends strong. There’s a whole chapter that functions as a Q&A which I liked a lot. All in all it was a good read, insightful. It just wasn’t exactly what I thought it would be.
Adventures In The afterlife, was not what I had expected. It was so much more. Most people travel down the path of life, never knowing who they are. When young they see themselves one way, and when older most reflect back to the days of their youth to remember who they were. Although there are many that veer off the traditional path and search for answers. Of course I refer to the readers of this book and others like it. My thanks goes out to all of the explorers for truth, and their courage and compassion to share their discoveries with those of us that lag behind. I loved the book.
If you are interested in OBE and the experience of William, you should definitely read this. I often pick these bikes because for me, it's somebody's experience.
I am sure we all are sceptical but then we should also be open and ready to try. Unfortunately obe is not finding you can immediately get into as far my experience.
Mr. Buhlman seems to have a lot of knowledge of the afterlife for someone who has never been there. A lot of his knowledge is loosely based on written works and quantum physics theory. The Tibetan Book of the Dead is often quoted along with some of the Eastern Indian folklore. He gives advice on how to achieve a productive life full of material goods by envisioning them as spiritually fulfilling. Like a new car or a nice house, but nothing on how to earn these things, and I think it just contributes to the plague of entitlement that is so pervasive in our young people today. Sure, it's ok to work toward these goals but just imagining them into existence because the universe is at your beck & call is a little bit self aggrandizing and counter productive to spiritual growth, I think. I don't quite feel like it was a total waste of time, but it is classified as NON-fiction, and I question that. The last section was the worst, and I skimmed over the last 20 or 30 pages because he was just repeating the same stuff over & over.
a book that provides valuable insights and techniques for the ultimate journey of human life - and also reminded me of the infinite preciousness of every single day on this incredible planet. carpe diem! :)
The first section of the book was okay, but I wasn't terribly impressed. The second section, however , was of great interest especially the chapter on helping people through the death process. I would recommend this book for the second part.
